I think they both affect each other, but most of the time it's only in small amounts.

i dont think it necessarily does, but it quite often leads to you being stereotyped by others

I can generally tell what kind of music people listen to by who they are.

I think the type of music you listen to can influence you to some degree. But, it depends on how seriously a person takes music and impressionable the person is.

Nope, but it should give subtle clues.

It shouldn't but there are some cases where it just works out that way.

Its definitely one part of the puzzle. For some a bigger part than others.

does music influence people? yes.
does music determine exactly who that person is? hell no.

I listen to many different styles of music....

From a superficial stand point, I would think that people would not be able to really classify me from anything that I listen to or the way I dress.

Music is not who I am, it just something that I love.

Depends on how big of an influence they claim music to be in their lives. There are some people who don't consider music a big part of their lives, and just listen to and like whatever they might hear on the radio or through friends. On the other hand there are some who see music as a defining aspect of their life, and definitely are shaped by what kind've music they listen to. Varies from person to person I guess.

not even close. i listened to simple plan for a bit, but i don't hate my parents. i listen to metal but i'm not obese and extremely prejudice (omg you should've seen how i spelled that the first time) against anything non-metal. i listen to emo music and i'm not too down on myself. i listen to punk but i don't wanna "destroy the establishment", and I listen to rap but i don't sell crack to my community and shoot other people all the time.

i do however listen to classic rock, modern rock, and all that stuff and i party/drink a lot, and a few other things.

what about if I listen to Death Cab for Cutie? I'm a college drop out that hates Panera/Starbucks so does that make me retarded or just strange?

Music is a huge chunk of who I am, but I wouldn't disappear or change if you took it out of the equation.

I don't need a music scene to tell me who I am

Yes, collectively, everything you are exposed to determines who you are.

Good job (I also would've accepted Catch-22 or the song title: Day In/Day Out). I ate the prize already, sorry.

Who the person is determines what music they listen to. That's why it's not cool to belittle someone else's collection or favorite bands. You are basically saying that they suck.

It plays a role in shaping a person, but it by no means defines them.

m_rue
03/05/09, 06:42 AM
It definitely influences them, but I wouldnt go so far as to say it determines who they are. like someone else said it's more the other way around.

i think it can work both ways. the type of person you are dictates what kind of music you listen to, but the type of music you listen to can have an influence on who you become. i voted yes.

not really, time and time again I've found myself totally surprised by someone's musical tastes..

Not always.

I know some kid who listens to straight death metal constantly, and he is one of the nicest kids I know.

It doesn't completely define I guess you could say.
