I'm looking to set up an effective hi-fi system but really don't know where to start. Basically, I'm looking for good quality speakers and some kind of receiver, but I'm not looking to spend a whole lot. What I really need is some sort of online resource where I can learn more about what's available. Something like ilounge.com for iPods or head-fi.org for headphones. Any help here would be appreciated, thank you.

i would go to somewhere like best buy or tweeters or something. ive been using the receivier that my dad had when he was my age. then i took some speakers that were his (fisher) and then my dad got a surround sound system and i took 2 of the speakers and hooked them up so i have 4 speakers. it works nicely. i dont really know about anything really nice or "new age"

Dont go to Best Buy. Those fucks want $300 or more for a decent reciever, not to mention a weird dude wont leave you alone about coming to your house to install it for you.

Oh yeah, I won't touch Best Buy with an 8 foot pole. If I could find a nice independent hi-fi store in Austin, I'd definitely hit that up. Maybe I'll ask my local record store if they know anybody.

That is what I did. Went to an old record store, crazy ass three story basement with over 750,000 records. They had tons of old turntables and recievers, sah-weet.
