Ellewood - Ellewood EP
Record Label: None
Release Date: November 2008

Who?

Ellewood, an extremely melodic alternative band from Missouri that are comparable to the likes of Coldplay and Dear Life. You can buy this, their 5-song EP, on iTunes

How is it?

Ellewood has a knack for blending a fan-friendly alternative sound with atmospheric and melodic elements. While in many places they show a definite affinity for sprawling, longer numbers, and while they make a good impression, most of the tracks end up dragging. They're more than adequate sonically, it's just that the slow progressions of the songs and the relative monotone of the whole EP begins to wear fairly quickly. Each of the songs sound nearly identical, and that kind of adds to the drawl of the whole thing.

I don't harbor ill-will for Ellewood, and there are a few places where they really make a good impression. The problem is, for the most part, the vocalist's Coldplay-esque vocals and the atmospheric instrumentation are pushed to the limits of tolerance and then more, never really mixing it up.

Overall, Ellewood, while not particularly enjoyable, shows some serious potential for this band, and I'd love to see them mix it up a bit and release something captivating.
