I graduated a 3yr film and screen media production degree last year. Have made a couple of shorts, but am not going to put them on the net yet - as that can sometimes hinder chances to get accepted into some festivals.
Please accept me into this thread haha.

Here's a short I made for a class last year. It's terribly acted, I know, but it was made by all writing majors, and we all hate production/acting. I wrote it, but don't let this shape your opinion of my writing skills. (GO READ MY TELEPLAY IN THE OFFICIAL WRITERS THREAD). There's some pretty cool shots in this short, though.

I'm currently in an Advanced Field Production Course. I haven't really shot any drama pieces yet, just a lot of short documentaries and art videos. I'm definitely more in to post production (editing, motion graphics and special effects) than camera work though.
Please Accept Me LOL
lol, no need for this to be an elite club! i just want to see if anyone is interested in the actual subject along with some of their works to be put up!

I think I want to do this.
I love to write, I realized all of my poems (creative writing class) are especially full of images, and I love film?
My school doesn't have a major for it though. So I think I'm going to do our Comm Arts-Radio, TV, Film major for starters, and then maybe grad school?
How many classes have you taken so far?
that short film i posted earlier is up for nominations in a local bay area high school wide contest.
wish me luck! i find out results in early april, i'll keep this updated.
i know there's a writers thread but maybe we can post some of our screenplays? just a thought to get this thread rolling

Ah ok. HDV. Have you ever played it on a big screen? Does the resolution hold up?
I'm shooting a short in about a month and at this stage we're shooting HDV. However I'm a little scared cause I've never shot HDV before and am wondering how the picture quality will turn out. The last few films I've shot have been HD and XD CAM, so I had no worries there.

I have no credentials yet - but I'm currently writing my first screenplay and I'm doing a short film soon. I shoot random stuff on a canon hd camcorder too but mostly that's just practice for when I want to really start making some stuff. My biggest flaw is I'm no good at editing - but my best friend goes to film school and that's his main area of study so it works out good for us a team. He can't write for shit.

I was actually going to make a thread (we should still do this) last year where we all sign up in the thread to make our own short films - we all have to accept certain requirements such as length and whatnot. But basically we'd set up our own prizes, upload our shorts on youtube, and vote on each others videos for say, 24 or 48 hours. The best rated short films win the prizes? Would you guys be down for that? "The AP Film Festival"

No. You'd be lucky if more than 2 people went in it.
Besides, there's already way better 48hr film comps out there.

A) I can almost guarantee there would be more than 2 people. Trust me.
B) This would just be for fun - just for the AP members, no strict guidelines, nothing like a "real" 48 hour film festival.

but im broke, and cant keep a job for more than a week, so im always borrowing a crappy camera when i shoot.

I made a few pretty shitty films as a film studies minor in college. I would have loved to keep going with it had I had a better outlet or more resources/direction.
I'm an AP filmmaker. Last fall I worked on a short titled Meadowcrest Apothecary that took two years to write. I just premiered it, and I can upload it if some want to see. I just finished writing a full length, I am currently looking for companies to back me with monetary support. This is very different than the last project I worked on and the first comedy anything I ever wrote and am directing.

Wow. 2 years to write a short. How did you manage that? I'm sure I would've either reached a point where I just dropped the idea completely or decided I was never going to perfect the script, so shoot what I had after about 1 year.
The last film I shot had 17 drafts of script - but at least 10 of those were done in one month. Then I left it for half a year, and came back and did 7 more drafts in another month. Decided it wasn't perfect, but I only had half a year left at uni to use their equipment, so thought I was better off shooting it and having something to show for myself then leaving it and having nothing at all.
It's funny comparing that process to making a film in 48hrs as well.

My buddy just did a documentary for his school (Minneapolis College of Art and Design) in which he documented homeless people. He actually found 3 random homeless guys on the street and they took him into the woods where they stay. They made a bon fire and started drinking a lot. They had tents and used a shopping cart for a grill. It's awesome. Then he and I stood on the side of the road with a sign that said "Tell us what you think about homeless people" directed towards people in cars. Many of them actually rolled down their window and talked to us about it, and we filmed it all. It was cool. Not that the idea is much like yours, but I thought you'd be interested.

I wrote a short film for my capstone course this semester (I'm a film student) and just had a major casting call for professional actors this past weekend which went really well. I've also been doing some great location scouting and I'll be shooting it over the last couple weeks of March as well as through April. I want it to turn out great so I can submit it to festivals and add it to my portfolio reel. I'm down for sharing each other's work on here.
In any case, what I really came in here to say was a reflection of what others have already posted. This being:

i have an idea for a short film, but i am curious if it is an idea that has been done before...so maybe you all can help me out.
an author famous for his very explicit fiction novels about murder and crime is working on a new book where he is coming clean and describing the inspiration for his novels...murders he has committed in almost identical fashions. the film would be 1/2 flashback and 1/2 present tense/narrative. very dark and grim.

that's a lot of material to be covered in a short. but if you can execute it well enough in a contained period of time, it should be fantastic with the right things.
but i don't think that's been done, good luck with it and i look forward to it :-)

I sure wish I had a producer! Sadly, I am self funding with what little I have. I've rented out a studio at the Russell Industrial Center here in Detroit for a specific location in the screenplay and I'm working on securing a police station for another scene. I'm trying to work on a budget to show in my portfolio that I know how to do so (although having help sure would be awesome). This week and next week I have to put together my production folder including shot lists, shot sequence lists, storyboards, character bios, location scout forms, floor plans, camera position diagrams, etc. We had our casting call last weekend where we had lots of professional actors and models show up from all over. So far I've gotten pretty much everyone I wanted. Pictures below!

Film school gets a bad rap (rightfully so a lot of the time because there is an awful lot of douchebaggery associated with it) but it's definitely a lot of fun. Watching the auditions and seeing your characters finally and literally come to life before your eyes means the world to you. It really is cool and I can't wait to start shooting.

Haha, not awkward, I appreciate it! I think I will definitely be using some DIY equipment. I've got a steadycam from this guy:

and I would like to have a few specific dolly shots so I may rent out a wheelchair, haha. Doesn't get much more DIY than that.

Man...if I had a crane....
No, all the actors are doing this for free. They are doing it for the DVD copy I give them so they can put it on a portfolio reel which is pretty fantastic. The actors are all professional and have done stage production, commercials and bit parts in film and television so for them to give up their time is really great.

shit man, that's so great. i would love to get some professional actors that would work for free, but i don't know how many people will take a 16 year old seriously.
are you shooting in digital or film? if so what kind of camera are you using?
I made a thread similar to this....

You never know. You might be surprised by how many people will take you seriously if it's structured well enough. There are definitely people out there that want to get paid but a lot of people love to have material to supplement their portfolio reel if they think it'll turn out legit once you're through with it.
I'm shooting in digital (though I'm thinking of shooting a montage for the opening in 16mm) and our school uses Sony PD-170's which I hate because I don't think they have a very cinematic feel to them. I'm trying to get the hook up with a different camera but if I get stuck with the Sony, I'll touch it up nicely with color correction in Final Cut.

yeah i wrote a short last summer i was very proud of, sadly my school's drama deparment is full of ... different people... i can't take seriously.
but i have a canon hv30 that i love, it has a 24p mode which gives it a nice cinematic feel, but i'm not really use to shooting in it and removing pulldown (it's a pain the ass). but hopefully i get use to it and really get the best out of it.

I know what you mean. I used to be in the drama department when I was in high school and I was also in love with film. Some of the other guys liked to tell me they were into it but when it came down to crunch time it was always, "do we really have to do that? Why don't we do something else. Maybe later?" Or they would do it but never take it seriously. Filmmaking is fun, but it's hard work and there are a lot of people who like to talk about it but when it comes time to put forth the effort...some fall to the wayside.
Canon's are always good. The camera I'm trying to get a hold of is a Canon actually. Otherwise I'm really going to be messing with the aperture on the Sony big time. Color correction is the only thing that saves me on that camera.

shit man, welcome to my life in high school trying to film. but all that shit you go through just to finish your story and see it after editting everything when it comes together. one of the most rewarding feelings ever, that makes me pursue it more. (i'm sure you know what i mean)
also, i've written a ton of screenplays, and have a lot more ideas waiting to be fleshed out but juggling that with school and social lives are a pain. if you wouldn't mind would you read some of the shorts i've written? i'd love to have some feedback

Yeah man, that'd be just fine with me. School is gonna get insane for me over the next month and a half due to the project (I also have to help shoot three other projects as part of the group aesthetic) but I can take a look when I've got the time.
My best advice is to keep writing and always stay in preparation even when the others don't follow. It may not be their dream (and most likely isn't even if they say it is because otherwise they'd actually take a vested interest as you have) but it certainly is yours. Keep that attitude and when you move forward beyond high school and the others who don't care as much, you know just as well as I do that it will be worth it.
I do know the feeling you speak of. I haven't gotten to do a big production like this in a while so to cast these people, find locations and finish my script....it's brought me a joy I've been missing for a very long time. I mean that with all sincerity too. The drama department was my life in high school. I lived and breathed acting and building sets ("crewing") and I logged in more hours than anybody else in the department because I loved it so much. Like I said, maintain that attitude and people will notice. I've gotten a lot of attention from my professor and classmates because of how into it I've been this semester. I'm not trying to toot my horn or anything, I'm just saying that I remember having this feeling long ago...and when that feeling brings you such joy...I think that means you're doing what you're meant to do.

Yes and yes. I'm feeling a little more calm these days because of the Michigan tax incentive for the film industry (they're currently building a few studios here, S3 and Wonder Works being the biggest) and so I'm hoping that I can pick up more internships and lower level positions around here at first. I'd absolutely love to move to L.A. or New York (New York moreso). The tax incentives here are exciting and are bringing in a lot of revenue already (George Clooney has been shooting at the airport here the last few weeks, Gran Torino was shot here, Drew Barrymore's new movie Whip It! starring Ellen Page was shot here) but I want to get out of Michigan badly. Been here my whole life. Desperately want to leave.

I grew up with Sony in broadcast in high school and I got a Sony VX2000 for graduation, and never really had a chance to mess with a Canon and see a difference in them. I really love Sony though, but it's a biased love because I've used nothing else really lol

My girlfriend's got an uncle who lives in San Francisco. He's always telling me about how far a drive it is to get to the epicenter of the film industry, away from San Francisco. That'd be really cool to go to film school in L.A. or New York. I always wanted to go to the New York Film Academy for at least their shorter program or even a year program to get a bachelor's from them as well. I just want to graduate from where I'm at and move on already. The film department at Wayne State is rather splintered. We've got some decent professors but the equipment a film school located in New York or L.A. would have is beyond comparison.

canon is the only thing i've ever used, although i have a nikon dslr if that counts haha.
but i love my canon, it has great modes like HDV 30i and 24p which gives it a cool cinematic feel when you remove all the pulldown bullshit in post. but i have never used a camcorder besides my Canon HV30. being a 16 year old i don't have much money to mess around with other equipment i wish i did have! but i think the HV30 is one of the best HD handycams out right now

full sail and the aii are mad expensive, so looking for something a bit easier financially.

(not edited at all yet, just finished this opening paragraph for my prose piece for my application to UArts.)
Sammy was beautiful in the most tragic sense of the word, and I loved her for that. Elegant and sad, she reminded me of the way funerals are gorgeous. Sometimes, late at night, her and I would go to local graveyards and just hangout by some random grave drinking cheap boxed wine and smoke cigarettes. We would just shoot the breeze and talk about how much we hated this god forsaken town and what we planned on doing the day we got out. Even massacres weren’t as great as her. You know that feeling when you get kicked straight in the shin, that was Sam.
(still need to figure out the rest of the story, got 5-7 pages to fill with interesting story, but like this open. what do you all think)

recap of today's filming:
i wrote a short called "The Golden State" (http://pshh.fileave.com/The%20Golden%20State.pdf) (link to the screenplay) for an english film adapting The Grapes of Wrath. the short is probably one of the worst i've written stating the fact it was written in a night. i filmed with 4 close friends that were in my group to be the actors... we filmed most of the footage today...
we had battery issues, i didn't bring another battery on the trip across the bay, so it was a big hassle (we filmed across the golden gate bridge and the downtown district of san francisco).
overall. with terrible acting and uncontrolabble laughter in between a million takes. the finished product will be up soon.
today was horrible weather, grey, foggy, rainy, whatever you want to call it.

I'm nearing completion of principal photography for my short film. Minus a few hiccups, things have been going really well and I'm very happy with my cast. I got to work with a really cool group of people and I feel pretty blessed. I'm actually sad to know it's ending soon because I'll miss my cast. Makes me want to write another one and cast them again as soon as possible. In any case, I thought I'd post my promotional photo I'm using which will also be the DVD cover art.

Well, my film is sort of nearing completion. My run time is about fifty minutes long and I've still got a bit left to tweak. I'm pretty excited though. I've been nominated at my school's film festival (Moving Media) and I want to submit it to other festivals once I'm done. In the meantime, I made a little trailer using Shrinking Universe by Muse because I couldn't get it out of my head and I have wanted to use it for a trailer ever since I saw the trailer for 28 Weeks Later.

I have a question for anyone who might know the answer. I recently purchased a song from YouLicense.com and the musician wanted to know if I could revise the contract based on the possibility of the film being picked up for distribution. If that happened, she wants royalties. I'm fine with revising it, I don't know that that would actually happen (film being picked up for distribution) but I'm fine with revising it nonetheless, however I don't know what percentage she should be getting. Does anyone know what a solid percentage would be for a college student filmmaker to be putting into a contract? I've been reading around quite a bit and all I keep coming across is "it's negotiable." I'd just like to know what a starting percentage might be so I could go from there. I don't know much about this portion of the process I guess.

I'm definitely more of a wanna-be than anything. I have ideas and I have scripts and until recently I've always pussied out.
I sold a script about a year ago and the company really screwed me over, but being part of the pre-production of it (casting, re-writes, etc) got me really excited. In the last year I've written 5 feature length scripts (I'm working on a 6th) and 3 TV show Pilots. In August-September we're finally going to start production on my comedy/horror Fluffy the Zombie Slayer (and then hopefully send it to Troma Pictures for Distribution). After that we're either going to shoot one of the TV show Pilots or try to get my script back from the company that we signed the rights too and make that next.
Right now I'm working on something called Evaporated (title came from my favorite ben Folds Five song) and I'm REALLY liking how it's flowing.
That being said, if anyone is from the Philly area and is free on the weekends of August and September PLEASE hit me up. We could always use some extra hands and specifically Extras to be Zombies and Vampires.

Hey, I never said that they're great scripts or TV show Pilots or that they've been filmed. All I'm saying is that I've written them.
I started off saying that at this point I'm a wanna-be because i haven't done anything yet, and I said that I was going to send Fluffy the Zombie Slayer to Troma for Distribution... did I say they were going to pick it up and release it? No. I simply said I was going to send it to them.
as far as the film I "sold", I have the contract with me still. It was a stupid contract to sign since it basically said "I'll get paid when they film and that they own the script for the next 2 years, after that I can either renew the contract or take my script back." I signed the contract and we did a bunch of casting and and pre-production and then i never heard from the company for a few weeks. A few days ago the Inquirer wrote an article about the company and how they're currently filming some movie in Media written by the head of the company. I called him about it and he said "don't worry, this movie we're making is going to make us ALOT of money that we can use to make your movie". I think that's a huge steaming pile of bullshit and relaying WAY too much on "chance". So I have to wait until NEXT august for the script to be legally mine again. The script is even registered in the screen writer's guild under the title of "Describing the Moon".

Man....this thread seems to have died. Anyway, I participated in the 48 Hour Film Challenge here in Detroit this weekend and am overly exhausted, but it was a lot of fun. Looking forward to screening all of the projects on Wednesday. Also, the film I made this past semester has been accepted into a new program in Detroit where they'll screen the film once a month for critics, film students and festival screeners at certain theaters in the area. I'm pretty happy about that. Anyone else out there working on anything? How is everyone doing?

Just the name 48 Hour Film Challenge sounds exhausting. What was yours about? What did you do last semester?
I used to write movie scripts and stuff a couple years back, but found that no one around here does anything interesting like that, and I don't have the resources or knowledge on going about getting anything done for anything I've written so it all fell apart.

Oh man...it was really exhausting. I didn't sleep or have a real meal for two days. I'm hypoglycemic so it all caught up to me on Sunday morning and I had a seizure. No ambulance or hospitals though. Just practiced my breathing and barreled through it, haha.
The challenge works as follows: They give you a genre (which you literally have to pull out of a hat), a line of dialogue (ours was "Why don't you explain it to me?"), a character name and description (ours was either Lee Ann Butler or Liam Butler and they had to be a painter) and a prop (in this case it was a book). The film had to be 4 to 7 minutes long. Ours was about 5 and a half and I'm pretty happy with it. We had to write, shoot and edit all within that 48 hour time frame so it was definitely rough. I wrote about the following:
I had this dream about three years ago when my grandmother died and I could never shake it. She was actually pretty young and very healthy so it was shocking. She had been going into surgery for a minor problem with her stomach. Somehow, something went wrong during surgery and she died the next day. I had a dream about her two weeks later. My family and I were living in the future, the year 2050 or something like that, yet we were all still the same age that we are now. So in this future, scientists have created a way to take a persons desires or plans for the future and make them into a reality, after the people have died. What this means is that these Scientists can take a desire or plan for the future that a person had, out of that person after they have died and turn that desire or plan back into a physical, but temporary person. Sort of like an "unfinished business" type of thing. In my dream, the scientists came to my family and told us that my grandma had, before she died, a desire to celebrate the tenth anniversary of something (I can't remember what it was). They told us that they had found a way to turn that desire into a real physical her, and she was coming to celebrate that desire with us. The only catch was that she would not know she had died, we could not tell her, and after she had finished her desire, she would disappear and that would be that. So we waited for her to come in mourning because the thought of seeing her again and knowing she would leave again for good was awful. So she showed up and we celebrated with her for a little while. Every time she talked about how she had to clean something at home or call someone, we would look at each other with sad, knowing glances. After a few hours, she stood up and said, "well, I guess I'd better head out," just like my grandma used to say and my mom hugged her and began to cry. My grandma asked us what was wrong and we told her, "nothing. We just love you." She smiled and hugged us all, then got in her car, pulled out of the driveway, went down the street, and literally disappeared. It was one of the strangest and most vivid dreams I think I have ever had. So, the genre we were given at the 48 hour film challenge was "silent film." I brought up this dream and we decided that was the story we wanted to do. I wrote it and changed a few details. We used the actors we'd all had from previous projects and it came out pretty cool I think. For music, I did what I did for my last project and went to YouLicense where I bought the rights to a few songs and we used those. Only after finishing the shoot did I realize that the story seemed a little too familiar. I then thought about the ending of A.I. and face palmed. Ahh well, I still like what we did (and it was tough doing it with silent film).
As for my last project, it was about human trafficking and it came out to be about fifty minutes long. I used YouLicense for the music on that one as well because I have come to love that website. You get to meet a lot of really interesting artists. I made a trailer for it and posted a page or so back but I'll put it here again:

I've been thinking that the folks who post in here should do a film together, no matter how far away.
Oh man...it was really exhausting. I didn't sleep or have a real meal for two days. I'm hypoglycemic so it all caught up to me on Sunday morning and I had a seizure. No ambulance or hospitals though. Just practiced my breathing and barreled through it, haha.
The challenge works as follows: They give you a genre (which you literally have to pull out of a hat), a line of dialogue (ours was "would you please explain it to me?"), a character name and description (ours was either Lee Ann Butler or Liam Butler and they had to be a painter) and a prop (in this case it was a book).
Man that's a pretty interesting dream you had. Very vivid obviously, and to be a real life kind of dream with people you actually know makes it even more interesting, bizarre, and thought provoking I'm sure. The challenge rules seem to be fun and a good way of judging things most people would blatantly project forward ruining the idea the judges have in mind. I'm sure people used their line so blatantly that it was a weak point you know?
I can't get the youtube link at my job because it's blocked, but I'll check it out when I get home. I'm interested in seeing what people can do that's of any creativity and passion. I've never heard of YouLicense, but I write music myself. I would guess the most movie sounding stuff I've done is my electronic stuff. You can check it out at www.myspace.com/satellitesorshesdead (http://www.myspace.com/satellitesorshesdead) if you dig it, you're more than welcome to use it, just let me know whenever you need/want it, or if you dig it and would like something a bit more customized to what you're doing maybe we can work something out.

Oh wow man, would you believe I've listened to your stuff before without knowing it was you? I was looking for ambient music once and came across your page. I love it and would definitely love to use it. I'd be more than happy to pay you too. On YouLicense, artists generally allow you to make an offer and then choose to accept or reject it. Some artists set their music rights at a specific price because they've already created their own custom contracts. Some songs I'll pay 20 bucks for while others can cost me anywhere between 60 to around 160 bucks. The songs I've purchased the rights for and used are as follows:

And yeah, I definitely know what you mean by the blatant use of the line. I watched several of the projects from the past on their website and there are a lot of weak films that feature the line in such a blatant manner. The way we used it was (since it was a silent film) through writing. At the end of my dream, I remember being handed a form which read "did you feel your experience was worthwhile?" We decided to use this at the end and to have our main character simply write in response: "Why don't you explain it to me?" I'll show it to you once we are able to put it online.
Shot a short film this weekend. Was able to use the Sony EX1, and built a dolly and track that worked very, very well. Excited to edit it. I guess I shall keep this thread informed.

Haha, that's pretty crazy. That'd be great if you wanted to work something out for whatever you're working on either currently, or planning for the future. PM me and let me know what you're working on, and we can make something happen.
I've seen a couple shows on tv where that was kind of the challenge idea, and everyone of them blatantly ruined the line by making it more of the script than it needed to be. Oh well, maybe the people I was watching on tv weren't script writers.

Yeah, we actually started out that way. We got so focused on the issue of the character being a painter that the painter became the protagonist and we were obsessing over attempting to build a story around that idea. Finally, we just...let it go. We wrote a story out of my dream and inserted the painter and line of dialogue into it later so that we could just focus on telling a good story in a few minutes. It was difficult to finally work ourselves into that mindset, but I think it was ultimately rewarding.
I will definitely send you said pm. The DP and I are working on another couple short stories for August and into the fall for a Director's Workshop class we're both taking. I really like your music and I'm going to send the DP a link to your music as well.

I can definitely see where people would get so "worked up" about the challenge rules, that they'd kind of misinterpret them. I want to check yours out for sure.
That's great that you are already working on more ideas and stories. Constantly moving forward is the only way to be when it comes to something like this. I look forward to hearing what kind of ideas you're tossing around/where you think I would fit into the musical side of things. Let me know what your DP thinks as well.

Ahh yes, I just looked at your age. Still awesome though. I'm dying to go to New York. I need to go to L.A. but I want to go to New York more than anything. I thought about the New York Film Academy for a little while but wasn't sure if I wanted to devote myself to that because it's only a one year program and super expensive. I'm getting my bachelors in the fall and haven't decided if I want to pursue a masters. If I do, I'd definitely hit up New York.

Oh yeah man, I agree. I wish I'd had that kind of class in high school. Final Cut has definitely been the only program I want to work with for a while. Adobe and Avid are alright, but I just find Final Cut's layout easier to work with and their features are constantly being updated. Chroma keying is a lot of fun. Once I learned how to do it, I started filming myself talking to myself and doing all sorts of different things at once just to practice it. I got a green screen for Christmas a couple years ago so I try to sneak it in to projects if I can. Color correction is my latest favorite thing to work with on Final Cut because I love taking footage and bringing it to life even more.

I've been reading around quite a bit and all I keep coming across is "it's negotiable." I'd just like to know what a staritng percentage might be so I could go from there. I don't know much about this portion of the process I guess.
Hey, my brother's also a musician who does film scores/orchestra arrangements and all that stuff. I'll shoot him an email and see what he has to say about this question.

Oh definitely man. I'm pretty open with music (you might get that from listening to the tracks...I'm kind of all over the place). Whenever I'm filming, I like imagining what music would fit perfectly with that scene. I guess I just look for a certain mood. Like, I listened to your music and I could immediately imagine what kind of scene I would be playing it to. For B. Wilson for example would be an incredibly somber, atmospheric scene. Mournful, nostalgic...something along those lines.

Oh wow, that's so cool. There's this famous artist named Cory Arcangel who created this piece called Super Mario Clouds wherein he hacked the Super Mario program and erased everything except the clouds. The ending of it leaves Mario crying on a cloud. It's really incredible what people do with something like that.
I got into film because of my grandfather who was a producer at NBC. When I was a kid, he used to take me to the studio with him and I just fell in love with everything around me. I knew, even then, that's what I wanted for my life. He had such a passion for film and entertaining people and when he died, I wanted to carry on that legacy, not just for the sake of carrying it on, but because I knew there was nothing else I could do with my life. I just can't picture myself at a desk. No way. Nope.

I actually just received a storyline from an actress that I would love to write. There's a woman who was recently wrongfully accused of having sex with one of her students. The student was upset with her because she had given him a detention and refused to let him play with the marching band for some event. He got together with a friend and they accused the woman of sexual misconduct. She was forced out of her job and sent to prison for nine months. After that she'll be forced to go through five years of probation for sex offenders. She is married with two children. Had she not accepted the plea bargain for nine months, she would've been sent to prison for up to fifteen years until she could get out for good behavior. Needless to say, her reputation is ruined and her family is on the rocks. I'd love to write this story for film. I'm also attempting to write a children's short film based on some kind of nostalgic, magical world one experiences throughout childhood. Let's just say that the Where The Wild Things Are trailer inspired me. I love coming of age stories like Stand By Me, Hearts In Atlantis, The 400 Blows, Son of Rambow, etc.

I kinda scrapped the idea for the script that I had about half-written earlier this year. I think if I do go back to it, I'll need to start over from scratch. It was good practice though. For now, I have two ideas that I would love to develop into screenplays. Just need to decide which to start first. Both require a fair amount of research.
I am applying for a television screenwriting job today. I am quite excited.

Well if the criteria is about the same (researching, etc.) I would go with the one you simply like more. Or would like to shoot more.

Thanks, if I get the job today, I am talking with some execs, I can tell everyone the synopsis of the show, but I have been kinda sworn to secrecy. Me and a buddy of mine have been working closely with a company that is putting together a show, and we both wrote a pilot episode and today we unvail it for them.

Oh man, one of them I personally would not be able to shoot. It would have to be sold, haha. The other one is possible...actually very possible, but a harder script to write. I don't know what to do!

Nice. I used to write them a couple years ago, but I never filmed anything, because I was just a writer. I'd like to try it, but I feel that I'd be terrible with directing/editing/etc.

Okay, so I'm going to post a rough cut of what I and my crew did for the 48 Hour Film Challenge here in Detroit last month. I don't know how long I'm going to keep it online because it can be problematic when you're wanting to submit to festivals. In any case, I wanted to post something that I've worked on other than that trailer for my short film since others have posted their work. Here is a brief synopsis:
Our genre was silent film and we were required to have a character named Liam or Leann Butler who was a painter. We also needed to have a prop (a book), and a line of dialogue ("Why don't you explain it to me?"). We decided to base the screenplay off of a dream about an organization that can bring deceased loved ones back to life for a short period of time to fulfill an unresolved desire. Again, this is just a rough cut of what we did. One of the reasons it's a rough cut is because the people in the crew who edited it kind of messed with the color curves for the darker shots and they look funky. There are many other reasons this is a rough cut (there are also several shots missing), but that's the one that bugs me.

This is my dream career. I'm going to study it in college when I go (a while from now).
The first time I tried to write a script, I made a really big mistake. I tried to make a full-length film script, but considering I didn't know what to do after the 7th or 8th page on the 3rd or 4th try. Right now, I'm trying to buy a camera,(Not enrolled in High School, but home schooled and it sucks) and am working on a short script(around 15 minutes long, not trying to take any big bites right now). But once I get all the things I need, I'll do the film and post it here. The thing is, I have absolutely no friends and I don't know anyone TRYING to be an actor, considering I'd just moved. So, I'm between a rock right now and am trying to get something together.
But I have a few questions about film classes in college:
What class do you apply to to major as a director?
What class do you apply to to minor in screenwriting?
What is the best film college?
Do you think better understanding of film making comes out of film school?
Do you need to take any other classes?
Is film school necessary?
and of course...am I in?
I've been wanting to make a film for so long. There is one project I want to make. My dream-project really. It's a four-part dramedy film series about a kid in high school set from 2006 to 2010. It'll have a soundtrack that'd be AP.net approved (i.e.: Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Blink-182, The Matches, Tokyo Police Club, Vampire Weekend, The Killers, Boxcar Racer) and it will be (seriously) loosely but heavily based on Your Favorite Weapon. But I don't think I'll be ready for that one for a long time.
I have a few favorite writer/directors:
Wes Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson
Stanley Kubrick
Quentin Tarantino
Jody Hill
Martin Scorsese
John Hughes
Christopher Nolan
Although the way I'd direct would look almost nothing like them, I love them and would inadvertently be influenced by them.
But so far: I am in the worst possible situation to create my dreams. Some help would...well, help.
I premiered this short at a local Milwaukee film festival type thing last night called Firestarter Films. It's my first collaboration with my friend Alex.

What class do you apply to to major as a director?
What class do you apply to to minor in screenwriting?
Every film major (and every major of any kind, for that matter) has a set amount and type of classes that are required to complete a degree. This is at your university's discretion. Ask them.
What is the best film college? As far as individual curriculum go, most all film schools border on teaching the same shit. Just make sure your school has ample equipment for hands on use. Also, I'd try to go somewhere in a major metropolitan area, because you want to be somewhere with a good artistic scene. Film festivals/touring filmmaker Q&A's/etc. are essential to the learning process. For example, a couple months ago, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the directors of Half Nelson, premiered their new film, Sugar, and held a Q&A afterwards (I asked a question). Also, in two months, Kevin Smith, who is touring is making a stop in Philly, and he happens to be coming to a venue owned by my school (free admission, which I'm definitely taking part of, even though I don't particularly like his films).
Do you think better understanding of film making comes out of film school? Yes. It teaches the important lesson that if you can't collaborate with others, you're never going to make it. Plus, in 20 years, you could very well be working with these same people.
Do you need to take any other classes? Wow, you really don't understand how college works.
Is film school necessary? No. Never has been, never will be. It's your discretion. But no one's going to give you a shot based on what you THINK you can do. Film school gives you the tools to SHOW your growth as a filmmaker, and your overall skills, but is by no means the only way to get out there and make movies. Trial and error, even at film school, is still the first best way to become a good filmmaker. Wherever you do it is your choice.
and of course...am I in? Who knows.

Wow, you really don't understand how college works.
Well, I know you have to take regular classes (Math, science, etc.) but I was just wondering if there are other film classes I have to take. Apparently the answer is no. But thanks for all your help!

Going back to school next fall as a film/video/new genres major. Can't explain how excited I am, despite it being a year away. I've taken two film classes, one in high school and one in junior college, and both were filled with people who just thought it would be an easy way to get an English credit. Zero intelligent film discussion.

I want to do this. I am currently just doing general classes at a community college. i could use all the pointers i can get.
- learn to write stories and screenplays correctly. this only gets better as you progress. but i cannot urge enough on how important story is. for me, being in high school that is the only thing i can rely on. i try so hard on perfecting the short because a good story makes a better film. you cant make a good movie out of a bad script.
- pre production is HUGE. i don't know what youre going for, but i'm more of an auteur, being in high school i wrote, directed, editted, sometimes scored, and even acted in some of my films. but in the end it's so worth with the accomplishment you look back on.
- once your script is ready to go, pre production is a big deal, find your locations, bring a camera, take pictures of the shots you want with actors acting as a stand-in. or at least thats what i do, or if you really dont have enough time when youre shooting go with it as you shoot.
- with your cast and crew, my personal opinion doesn't matter about what people are doing, but how people feel about movies in general. i'd rather be working with 5 people who love making movies and i know closely, rather than 20 people who are just there to help me out and not give a shit. keep your cast and crew close together, when you make movies it will be a better overall experience for all of them, knowing each other, and the overall chemistry on set is better.
- get actors who can actually ACT and have some charm on camera haha
agh i have a ton of tips but if you have any more concerns, i'd love to help.
for myself, i'm shooting a short i wrote this summer in september, yesterday was my first meeting with cast and crew and we figured out all of the days we're shooting and where. i'm super duper excited to shoot this script. but in the mean time i gotta go make a dolly. but this is the first production where i'm going to be trying to use over 20 people on set at a time, managing those people are going to be a huge problem, also i'm filling an auditorium with people for a particular scene. should be interesting enough. but if you guys are curious on what it's about, i'd be glad to send you the screenplay

i think for majors go, you should choose what you want to pursue in, writing, directing, cinematography, etc. and for camera. i use a Canon HV30, wonderful HD camcorder that has a ton of manual option for shutter speed, aperture, etc.

Yeah it was partially Tarantino inspired, ha. My co-director did wrote the script after I came up with the premise.
It's not a hard festival to get into, haha. If you show up with a DVD, they will play it. But it's a great event that I hope gets even bigger and grows Milwaukee's film community.
People from that were at the event keep contacting me to tell me it was their favorite film of the night, which is awesome to hear. But maybe the competition was just weak, haha.

Okay, so I went in and pitches two ideas. I really wish I had worked on my pitches a little more beforehand. I ended up giving a worse pitch for the movie I want to write more. They had me under a 3 minute cutoff for each pitch, and I only got to the lowpoint for both of them. They said I was engaging as a storyteller, but I need to work on on a concise introduction to set the tone for the rest of the pitch. Anyway, I'll find out which idea they picked on Thursday, at which point I'll give you guys a brief synopsis of the movie itself.

Great film community and high quality videos like Vimeo. Films are approved first though by staff, so it takes a little bit longer to have your video go up.
But... you also get paid a percentage of the ad revenue that your video generates. Mine's only been up for a couple days and I have 100 views and 17 cents in earnings. :-)

Here's a little of what I know:
New York University
Emerson
Ithaca
State University of New York Purchase College
Florida State University
Northwestern University in Chicago
I've heard a little about Boston University and Syracuse, but I haven't heard a whole lot of great things about Syracuse's program. Syracuse just got their film program really rolling a few years ago I guess and it's still kind of downscale. Boston University, some have told me, is mildly comparable to Syracuse but better. Of the film schools listed, Emerson is the one school (at least I think it is) that allows its students to make a film before junior year. Northwestern in Chicago is where Zach Braff went and got his start. That school is actually really solid and I'm envious of the equipment they work with after visiting a couple times.

My film class is the only thing in my schedule right now that I really enjoy. I should take the time to make a film.
I'm currently working as a PA on a revenge type of film called Bring Your Own. It's my first time working on a film set, but it's fucking awesome. It's through this film club at school, and I'm having a great time. I known being a PA isn't anything to write home about, but hey, for a freshmen, it's good enough just to be on set and see how things work.

Oh yeah, I'm a film major in Detroit. I'm graduating (finally) this semester and I can't wait. This is what I want to do forever.

Awesome and congrats! Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I want to work in film for the rest of my life as well, and I'm so glad I realized that early enough where I could actually do something about it. I'm a first semester film major, so I'm very excited for what's coming.

Good for you, man. I realized it long ago too, unfortunately I screwed myself up my first year by allowing myself to believe I should be doing something else. Then reality set in and I was stuck here in Detroit realizing that I could not escape my dream. Thankfully there are some great tax incentives going on here for the film industry, but I still want to break out of here and leave. I hope everything works out for you and your excitement becomes everything you're wanting. The ride alone is worth it.

Hey everybody, I decided to upload my narrative film I made this past winter/spring on human trafficking. You can see it here if you like (it's kind of long so...):

Yeah, haha it's pretty cool. I got excepted into a couple festivals that are featured on the list of festivals to submit to over on withoutabox.com. Once you do that, they give you an imdb page which is kind of neat.

Haha, well that's fair. You still writing scripts?

Haha, well that's fair. You still writing scripts?
I think way earlier in this thread I may have discussed my first script - or maybe it was in the official writer's thread, but I kind of put that one on hold (this was a very "garden state" type script, overall a dramatic coming of age story, probably something pretty typical for someone's first screenplay) but yeah I never quite knew how to finish it and now I almost want to start the whole thing over.
Now I'm actually going to start writing a film based on a true story. This has been a difficult task so far because the events took place in the late 1800's, and I have to do a lot of research to make it all legitimate. There is honestly enough of a story to make a 3 hour movie if anyone wanted to, but my biggest problem has been dialogue. I know people didn't converse back then like we do, so I'm having some trouble making the dialogue flow in that aspect. Good thing about this idea is I don't have to come up with a plot, but I do have to fill in all the gaps between the major events that actually happened. This is something that I would never be able to shoot myself though. My first idea (the one similar to Garden State) could easily be filmed by myself, with the help of some friends of mine in film school and some actors who will work for cheap/free. That film almost requires no budget.
There is also a third idea I have, that would take place in present day, that would be "inspired by true events," haha. That's kind of just an idea floating around in my head right now.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning the first idea near the beginning of this thread I think. Actors who work for free/cheap are surprisingly easy to come by. Hit up Craig's List and make a group on Facebook for a casting call and you're golden.
A period piece eh? That is tough, but if you're able to pull it off that's great. Costuming, locations and, yeah, dialogue, is what would probably make it difficult. You can get costume designers and makeup artists on Craig's List too though. I worked with a couple ladies who just wanted to get their names out there so they worked for free which was really cool. If it ever comes to pass, that would be really cool to do.
I almost did my own Garden State type story but then I changed my mind at the last minute. I still like your idea you had earlier in the thread about making films and judging them. I also still think it would be cool to do a film project across the state lines with the people who post in here that would be interested. I keep thinking we could film bits and pieces of a project and send them to each other followed by one or more people doing different edits. This is a music community so we've got several musicians here who could contribute music (there have been people in this thread who have offered services already) plus I've been using the website youlicense.com to get professional tracks for my projects. That could also be a good resource. I'd love to submit an AP.net film project to festivals and get it up on imdb as well. It would just be really cool. Many things are racing through my head now.

You know what would be sick, is if we all got together and made a film like "Paris, je t'aime" or "New York, I love you." If we could add a handful of short films together to make one feature length project?
And as far as my period piece goes, there is just no way I could do it. It involves an arctic exploration and a big boat and things I could never be in charge of..haha. That's why, as far as that story goes, I'd have to try and sell it if I ever completed it.

That idea would be really cool. I'd be down for something like that as I love Paris, je t'aime." Still haven't seen "New York, I Love You."
Haha, oh I see. Yeah, arctic explorations and big boats would likely be hard to come by on a student budget. Well if it ever gets made some day and I see it in a theatre, I'll be sure to remember this conversation.

You should also remember this conversation if you ever make it to hollywood and are in the position to pitch a script to a major producer :)
Anyway...let's discuss the AP Film Project

I hope that, if I'm ever in that position, the rumors about Hollywood producers are really accurate and the words "arctic exploration" and "big boats" followed by "money" will make their eyes widen with excitement.
Yes, let's discuss this idea. Right now I'm gearing up to film my next project for the next month and a half or so of my last semester. It shouldn't be an extraneously long shoot like my last one though. That project turned out to be a lot longer than just a "short film." So I'm game to get going on something else right away too. Portfolios are my friend.

Alright. There's a huge list of festivals we could submit a piece of work to and a lot of them have specific genres in mind.

We could just make a brand new thread for it after we hammer out the details?

That could work. There might be the usual complainers, but we could see how far it goes.
So what would be the rules specifically for people or groups of people involved? Limits on films, length, number of people involved?
