I searched for Graphic Novel threads, but most of them are old.

Anyways, I've been getting into graphic novels lately. I read the Watchmen about a year ago and loved it. I've read the first 2 volumes of Y: The Last Man and that is incredible also.

What's everyone's favorite Graphic Novels? I've been thinking of checking out "The Sandman" and "The Filth".

Watchmen is the only GN I have read and I absolutely loved it. It has certainly made me want to check out more Alan Moore.

If only a thread existed where comic books were regularly talked about...god, someone should really get around to doing that. How could the Entertainment forum exist for this long without one?

Oh.

Wait.

FYI, there are other comics than Watchmen. Better ones too.

Sorry. Sarcasm sometimes comes out poorly on the internet. About 15 threads down is a thread called "Wednesday is New Comics Day." It's where we discuss comics/graphic novels. It's our third volume and has regular posters on a daily basis and is kind of the bees knees.

Check it here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=588872&page=133).

Nice. Feel free to join in conversation. We're really helpful (I can only assume you checked the first page) and are very nice to newcomers. Except when they are girls who don't respect Jimmy's authoritah.

that's not completely true, It's not limited to girls its anyone who proves themselves to be stupid time and time again

seriosly though, we tolerate the watchmen thread but everything else can be discussed in the comics thread.

Here's a list of the ones I've heard good things about and plan to check out. If I could get opinions on these as well as additional suggestions, that would be great:

Y: The Last Man
Maus
Jimmy Corrigan
Swamp Thing
Promethea
Tom Strong

I'm most excited for Y: The Last Man. Is there a collection of the entire series in one book available yet? I couldn't find one at the Borders I stopped at.

There are dual volume books, though only one is out as of now, for Y. Go to your public library before you decide to pay 15 bucks per issue. Also, Preacher isn't on your list, and that is a problem.

I couldn't find one at the Borders I stopped at.The series is too long to fit into one book, seeing as how it had monthly issues that spanned over 6+ years. It is collected into 10 volumes however, and you can probably check them out at your local library, if you really don't want to drop the coin for that many books

TJ - I'd personally avoid Jimmy Corrigan. I'm quite the comic/OGN enthusiast, and I found Corrigan to be impenetrable and a very, very bad read.

Also, I strongly recommend Blankets to you. Check that out. I feel like that would be up your alley. It is a single volume.

Maus (don't forget Maus II) and Y the Last Man (no single volume editions exist of Y) are the best ones off your list, and past that I would go with Preacher, Fables, Bone (there is a single volume of this), the Walking Dead, Laika (this is a single volume), and Local (you'd also love this, and it's a single volume).

It was flaming related to the fact that he made a thread about a subject that has a thread existing on the first page, not about graphic novels or anything of that sort. Unless you come in their downing comics, I'll be nothing but cordial and helpful. Well, I try to be at least.

100% rec Y, I read it recently and it is probably one the most enjoyable reads I've ever had of anything, ever. I would say check it out at a library first to make sure it is your kind of thing, but I was personally sold after the first issue.

Maus is also really good, though I read it when I was quite young and haven't given it a reread for around six years, at least. So could be a rose-coloured glasses thing, but I doubt it.

Check out Preacher. I'd say that's the only book I like more than Y.

I just read Maus recently for the first time, and it's incredible. Just an absolutely gut wrenching read.

Maus was the first graphic novel I ever read, and it was when I was really young. The copies I have are actually my mother's whose parents are both Holocaust survivors. I usually am not comfortable reading stuff on the Holocaust, but Maus is the exception. It's really well done.

I've actually been planning on getting into Preacher recently, though I haven't had the opportunity to check out the first trade yet. It's the next down on my list of reads.

Uzumaki is fucked. If you like it though, the same author put out an equally fucked up story called Gyo (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/gyo/). Also, there is an Uzumaki movie that is very close to the story and fucking cool.

I've watched some of the movie but never got around to finishing it for some reason. I'm excited to read it and you saying it's fucked makes me even more so, haha.

Have you heard of the second one I mentioned (Black Hole by Charles Burns)? Hopefully it's good, I hadn't heard of it before I saw it in the store.http://www.amazon.com/Black-Hole-Charles-Burns/dp/037542380X (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Hole-Charles-Burns/dp/037542380X)

The setting is Seattle during the early '70s. A sexually transmitted disease, the "bug," is spreading among teenagers. Those who get it develop bizarre mutations—sometimes subtle, like a tiny mouth at the base of one boy's neck, and sometimes obvious and grotesque. The most visibly deformed victims end up living as homeless campers in the woods, venturing into the streets only when they have to, shunned by normal society. The story follows two teens, Keith and Chris, as they get the bug. Their dreams and hallucinations—made of deeply disturbing symbolism merging sexuality and sickness—are a key part of the tale. The AIDS metaphor is obvious, but the bug also amplifies already existing teen emotions and the wrenching changes of puberty. Burns's art is inhumanly precise, and he makes ordinary scenes as creepy as his nightmare visions of a world where intimacy means a life worse than death.

You'll love Maus (Such an interesting idea to use mice as Jews and Cats as the Nazi's) and Jimmy Corrigan (Which is one of my favorites, definitely a totally different approach to comics/graphic novels in general. It is heavily art over substance atleast at first glance. The overall picture is brilliant and quite deep on many levels)

I think you'd enjoy Transmetropolitan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmetropolitan)

I'm currently reading Richard Stark's Parker: The Hunter Which is based off the novel of the same name. I believe the Mel Gibson movie Payback is also based off the novel. This comic is the only off-shoot of any Parker story that Richard Stark's allowed the Parker name to be attached to. The artwork is gorgeous and fits the overall tone perfectly.

I really want to read A Drifting Life by Yoshihiro Tatsumi

Oh and for anyone that enjoyed Black Hole I HIGHLY recommend Monsters by Ken Dahl. Both have some similar subject matters.

Old post and all, but sweet brag time, J.H. Williams the dude who does the artwork for promethea, as well as a bunch of other books lives by me and I got him to sign a nice hardcover copy of the first promethea trade.
