It's something friends and I will argue about all the time.
Who did the first "Modern" breakdown.

If you wikipedia "breakdown" you'll get a few different things. if you read the selections you will come across "break" and it will link you to a musical related section. from there you will find a section for breakdown in metal hardcore or something similar to that.

in that section it explains a break down in metal/hardcore is done in half time and it looked at as an essential part of that type of music.

it will aslo tell you that the first breakdowns can be traced back to the metal band Dark Angel and their second release Darkness Descends which was released in 1986.

I've lsitened to this album, or bits a pieces and do not hear any modern break downs.
I hear what they are talking about, but it's nothing similar to todays breakdown.

Now my question to you guys is this. Which band and song do you believe had the first modern breakdown.
I for one don't think it was a metal band.
It was the Synthpop band a-ha with their song "Take On Me"
Watch the video on Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW86DTpWWpM
Start it at 56 seconds and you'll hear it at 1:06/07.

This song was recorded in 1984
2 years erlier than the album Darkness Descentds by Dark Angel.

Know of anything erlier?
bring it on. ;]

"This kind of breakdown can be traced back to the Los Angeles thrash metal band Dark Angel, whose drummer Gene Hoglan first played this kind of rhythmic double bass drums-guitar oriented breakdown on the title track of Dark Angel's second album, Darkness Descends."

Can clearly see how the drums could sound like a "breakdown" and the bass guitar is playing the same thing.

Dark angel are ace, metal metal metal.

The answer is Throwdown, anyway.

Dark Angel are a fucking blast from the past. Also I met Gene Hoglan after a show at Rock City I can't remember who he was playing for. He's played with just about every metal band ever. Dude is fucking huge.

Ha, it is kind of funny to see that mini-breakdown in that song, never paid attention to it before. I wouldn't say it was the start of modern breakdowns though.

I'm not saying they invented it by all means. or even popularized it. because no one picks up on it. I'm just saying that song, has the first modern breakdown in it.
I've yet to come across a song prior 1984 to have anything remotely close.

Now if we were going to say in the genre. that is quiet possible.
That CD came out in 1989.
One of my friends brought them up numerous times until I had him listen to Take on Me.

And I also had a friend bring up Pantera. But song he mentioned didn't come out until 1987.
still 3 years too late.

Breakdowns were obviously invented after MySpace, because bands like BMTH and TDWP helped invent breakdowns and they came after MySpace.

Tom Anderson actually invented the breakdown, and then entrusted its sheer awesomeness to bands like TDWP, BMTH, ADTR, and other 4-letter bands so that they could wow the masses. It was a group effort between MySpace and Hot Topic.

Holy shit, how could I forget Hot Topic? If they hadn't been playing those CDs, then how would the spoiled teenagers of suburban America discover these bands away from their computers?
