Director/Writer: Terrence Malick
Cast: Sean Penn, Brad Pitt
Story: The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence. |

I've been reading all sorts of stories about what's happening with the new Terrence Malick film, Tree Of Life. Some of the stuff lately makes it sound like it will be amazing. Just found out the below information on EW a couple of hours ago.

Terrence Malick's upcoming 2009 movie, The Tree of Life, may in fact be three movies, Empire reports. An effects artist working on the film, which stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, said that it will be released in a regular 35mm version, a shorter IMAX version, and another shorter 35mm version. Also, one element of the film's heavily guarded plot has been revealed: Part of the story will occur in prehistoric times and will feature dinosaurs.

But lately there has been all this talk of the film featuring Dinosaurs. Here is a quote from the visual effects artist, Mike Fink, from EMPIRE Magazine.

"We're just starting work on a project for Terrence Malick, animating dinosaurs, the film is The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. It'll be showing in IMAX — so the dinosaurs will actually be life size — and the shots of the creatures will be long and lingering."

http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/03/02/terrence-malicks-tree-of-life-has-imax-sized-dinosaurs/

There's a theory that Jeffrey Wells and others have been kicking around about Malick digging up some old ideas from a project he had written in 1991 after Days of Heaven called simply Q. The story involved a creature that dreams about the evolution of the universe, however, I still don't know, or understand, how exactly that might play into The Tree of Life. And what does that title even have to do with a troubled kid anyway?

It's shooting in my backyard. I just wish I knew where, exactly. I'm surprised that AICN hasn't been on this more, given Harry's excitement for the film and its shooting locale.

/film has posted some stuff on how this might premiere at Cannes and has a pretty good description of what the film is actually supposed to be about.

The film opens documenting the origins of life, through the age of reptiles and mammals and then man. Progressively, we are swept through time until the 1950s, where the birth of life suddenly comes to seemingly pointless sickness and death. Pointless, that is, to young Jack, who is unaware of all that has led to this point and time, only to arrive to the tragedy he must come to grips with. This is the philosophical thrust of older Jack’s struggle to coexist in a world that seemingly has little to no value for him. The “tree of life” is the framework of the story, how one thing leads to another, a miracle of growth and evolution, where nature is purposeful, and never random.

Malick's film usually aren't appreciated for what they are (masterpieces) until years later. You can count on this being a flop, doesn't mean it won't be a great film.

Terrence Malick's 'Tree of Life' Confirmed For A November Release Date

A few rumors have been making the rounds of late regarding Terrence Malick's long-gestating "The Tree of Life" starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

One, the film will come out in November and two, the film, might not be ready for Cannes 2010 and might instead hit the fall film festival.

Well, apparently those rumors are on the money or at least half right. Anne Thompson spoke to Apparition's Bob Bearney today, and confirms that indeed, the picture will hit the U.S. in November and, “that doesn’t mean it won’t be ready for Cannes,” Bearney says as has been speculated by many.

Are we reading into that comment too much? To us and what we've heard and been told, as of right now, it seems up in the air whether 'Tree of Life' will be ready in the sense that nothing, not even Cannes, can rush Terrence Malick. It probably won't become clearer until closer to the festival itself and surely, they'd leave a last minute spot available for Malick should a last minute delivery be the case.

Meanwhile, another recent rumor is that the film will have a release date of May 12 in France, but if it's officially coming out in the U.S. in November as confirmed by the guy who runs the distribution company, we highly, highly doubt they'd release it in other parts of the world that far in advance. In fact, we'd bet all the money in the world against it.

Lastly, Christian Bale (who had a role in Malick's 2005 film, "The New World"), Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams, and Olga Kurylenko are all on board for an untitled romantic drama that Malick will evidently begin filming this fall. If that actually happens (and don't necessarily bet on it) it would probably be the fastest back-to-back projects Malick has ever done. God, we hope it does happen, that cast under Malick sounds tremendous.

Malick's film usually aren't appreciated for what they are (masterpieces) until years later. You can count on this being a flop, doesn't mean it won't be a great film.
That's true of general moviegoers (and it doesn't help when, say, The New World is marketed as the next Titanic), but fans of Malick and film buffs appreciate him right off the bat. I knew both The Thin Red Line and The New World were phenomenal achievements after one viewing.

Brad Pitt on what the movie is about.

"It's this little tiny story of a kid growing up in the 50s with a mother who's grace incarnate and a father who's oppressive in nature. So he is negotiating his way through it, defining who he's gonna be when he grows up. And that is juxtaposed with a little, tiny micro-story of the cosmos, from the beginning of the cosmos to the death of the cosmos. So that's where the sci-fi – or the sci-fact – comes in."

Early review.

Saw TREE OF LIFE the other night at work and it really is amazing. Hypnotic, more like. I won't give anything about it away here, but yes it is long and there has already been talk in the news about Malick releasing it, then re-cutting it, then re-releasing it, etc.

The main bulk of the film is about his childhood growing up in Texas (reels 3-7 out of 9!). The "creation" footage is outstanding, absolutely jawdropping, and does indeed feel like 2001 - a lot of the effects are practical and your eyes can see that, which makes it really fascinating to watch. I don't have a problem with the creation footage being connected to his boyhood, after all, most boys love dinosaurs, so that's how I looked at it.

The story is framed around the death of his middle brother (in Korea?? We never know) and is a reflection on the circle of life, the evolution of life out of the mess of the Big Bang, but also about life itself (the strained relationship with his severe father, a stunning performance by Brad Pitt, just stunning), and the end of the Universe. I still haven't given anything away that hasn't already been said in the press. The film just has to be seen to be believed! One feels like a child again, seeing the world through young wide eyes.

Yes, it is finished! I believe it releases in October but it may be a limited release. And yes again it's about 3 hours! There is talk of a cut down version, which Malick did for New World as well, but nothing confirmed.

Synopsis from Malick himself: "We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, JACK, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world’s way of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

From this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle - precious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.

The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family - our first school - the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life’s single most important lesson, of unselfish love"".

just astonishing

oh my savior jesus,

Oh my god.

I don't even know where to start with this trailer. It's gorgeous. As you mentioned, the use of handheld... but also that fucking quick montage of gorgeous tracking shots... her walking in the desert, then sean penn running as a child through the house, the shots of the kids running through the smoke, standing around the fire, malick's brilliant use of natural lighting... my god, this is a visual orgasm. It's such a beautifully edited trailer, I almost got choked up.

something about it really made the tears start to well up; so nostalgic, and emotionally invigorating, without being maudlin

pretty sure it eclipsed the full-length, theatrical minority report trailer as my favorite that comes to mind

I saw the trailer last night before Black Swan, and I said in the other thread (to be followed with angry comments afterwards) that the trailer was a bit underwhelming to me. Sure, it was pretty but there was no real sense of plot at all. If I hadn't been keeping up with the movie news and previously known what the plot was, it wouldn't have pulled me in. From the standpoint of what a trailer is supposed to do, I don't feel like it was a good trailer, at least nowhere near as mindblowing as people in this thread seem to be making it out to be (from a cam recording nontheless)

Precisely. This flick has its audience -- and that is EXACTLY who the trailer targeted. There isn't anything his films can say or do that will make people that haven't seen any previous work interested. They are what they are and that is shown so, so beautifully in the trailer.

I wasn't trying to convey that sentiment. But his films definitely have a certain feeling to them that only he can really get across and they are not for the casual movie fan. The point I was trying to make is that this isn't going to be a Brad Pitt movie with time travel and dinosaurs.......it's a TM flick w/ time travel and dinosaurs!

His other two are Badlands (debut) and The New World (most recent). Both are fucking terrific.

It's not many film productions that consult with NASA as they're shooting. But then, not many film productions have Terrence Malick for a director.

As cinematographer Emanuel "Chivo" Lubezki tells it, the shoot for Malick's coming-of-age epic "The Tree of Life," starring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt, pretty much made up its own rules as it went along. Then it broke those too. "Once you think you got the formula, you realized there is no formula," Chivo told 24 Frames in an interview. "It's like no set I ever worked on."

Regarding the topic which has garnered a lot of internet attention, Glass answers, “I can confirm that there are dinosaurs.”

Recovery Room
03/08/11, 08:06 AM
Known for his stunning cinematography, Malick wanted to make the most of the imagery featured on the screen. ”We had one shot we were working on for the longest time that was nearly two minutes long,” says Glass. “It is there to give you time to take in what you’re looking at. Part of his focus is always rich, detailed images, generally keeping as much depth of field as possible so it gives your eyes plenty to wander around and take in.” After spending many months finessing a shot, Malick, Glass and his visual effects team would view the end result in one of the theatres in Austin. “We’d reach a stage where we were happy with it,” he says. “Then sometimes weeks later he’d ask, ‘Can we put that back up again? Let’s think about this again.’ And he’d consider trying to experiment on another track. There was always this element of the piece continually evolving and developing, which was very different to what you normally have a chance to do in a lot of the bigger visual effects pictures where it can all too often be a case of ‘That’ll do. That’ll do. Move on. Move on.’”

I need this film NOW.

I like the idea of a 2001/TToL double feature. It could have a worse film to be compared to. :-)

I didn't think I could be more excited to see this, but I kind of am after reading some brief reactions.

Reading bits and pieces of reactions but not anything discussing the movie much. Want to go into this without knowing much.

Fuck, I had no idea I was going to have to wait another two months almost. That is horribly annoying.

How did you guys not expect this release? Fox Searchlight does this with every release.

We get it 6/24. Can't wait!

Has nothing to do with expectation. It's still a bummer.
