Anyone else think this is gonna fucking own? I think it could be an Oscar contender for best picture, director, cinematography, and supporting actor (Saarsgard not Foxx) It seems to me that the film is gonna have a Full Metal Jacket feel to it, which could be awesome.

What other movies do you guys think will be Oscar contenders?

What other movies do you guys think will be Oscar contenders?I think it looks great. Sam Mendes has directed two astonishing films(American Beauty/Road To Perdition) with first rate acting, music, and cinematography. i would be immensly surprised(especially given the material/cast) that this didn't score big nominations. Jake Gyllenhall is going to explode

my premature oscar contenders(includes movies i haven't seen, but look strong)

best picture/director
A History Of Violence
Jarhead
Brokeback Mountain
maybe Unfinished Life
maybe The Squid And The Whale
Cinderella Man
maybe crash

best actor
Philip Seymore Hoffman (his portrayal of Truman Capote is going to blow everybody's mind)
Viggo M. (History)
Russel Crowe (Cinderella)
Terrence Howard (hustle and flow)
David Strathairn (Everybody should see Good Night, and Good Luck)
maybe bill murray for broken flowers
maybe joquin pheonix for walk the line
jake g. or heath l. for brokeback mountain
oh, and Matt Dillon. i hope he gets something for crash

Edit** seeing the hugely underrated Jeff Daniels get nominated for "squid" would be great

actress
look for joan allen to get another nom for upside of anger
gwyneth p. possibly for proof
reese w. for walk the line
charlize theron for north country

crash will probably own all the supporting categories, or any from the films mentioned

I think it will be a travesty if History of Violence is nominated, there has not been a more overrated movie since Chicago. It was dreck, with a shoddy script and mediocre acting. I was not surprised that 13 people in my theater walked out. After it was out, I challenged myself to think of one overwhelming positive about it, and I could not come up with anything.

Personally, I would put The Constant Gardener and Crash as the top two contenders out there without having seen a lot of the big contenders. It will be an interesting winter. And Jarhead is going to be amazing, no doubt.

I hope Crash gets a nomination for best picture... i'm just afraid it won't cause it came out so long ago.

And I would LOVE if Mickey Rourke got a supporting actor nom for Sin City, but I know it won't happen. But I said the same thing with Johnney Depp and he got nominated for Pirates, so who knows.

There's this movie coming out soon called Good Night, and Good Luck that deals with the McCarthy era that looks like it's going to be amazing.

I can't wait.

Having Jake Gyllenhaal in it doesn't hurt either.

I disagree. I thought that the story was a breath of fresh air. As for the script, well, I knew this was supposed to be about normal people. Some of the dialogue was a bit awkward, but that's how it is in real life. I don't think any of the acting was bad. But to give you some credit, I thought Viggo was the only one that really shined. From what I got out of it, the film was supposed to evoke emotion. Now what kind of emotion that is, I guess is left up to you. How did you feel when Viggo walked in his home at then end? Some would say happy because he can now lead a normal life with his family. Other's would say pissed because he was a terrible person and deserved to die. I would not hesitate to say that I've seen much better before, but this year, not so much.

Crash was infinitely better at evoking emotions and thought, as was the Constant Gardener. The story was straight forward and it just felt like nothing new. And the script was awkward in parts where it should not have been, saying things that were just goofy and not remotely "normal." I knew the movie was going to not sit with me after the first family scene, with the entire family coming into the room to check on the young daughter. I half expected Shaquille O'neal and Sully from Monster's Inc. to appear also. It is getting a reputation as a fresh take on a dying genre and this emotional masterpiece full of subtleties, however I could not get over the violence on me the viewer. I mean, someone told me it was the most subtle movie they had ever seen, but I felt assailed by the constant "Look, here is extreme violence, it doesn't solve things. Look at the son, he thinks he can be like his Dad to solve his problems." It didn't leave anything to imagination (Besides the final scene, which saved it in my book) and it just felt tired.

Personally, I think Cronenberg is on a downward spiral and I do not think he can get his way out of it. Sure, this was better than the unstructured mess that was Spider, but come on, Existenz blew it away and that was critically mauled for the most part.

For better movies, the aforementioned Crash and the Constant Gardener, I personally found Howl's Moving Castle, Hustle and Flow, Sin City (I know, where's the subtlety but I loved it) and for personal reasons, Serenity, to be superior films. I could probably keep going, because I really did not connect with this, but you get my point.

Sure I get your point. I guess we just dissagree. No big deal. And I agree with what you said about most of the other movies you mentioned (the ones I have seen). I still think we have yet to have a truly great movie this year. Crash was pretty damn good, but no where near perfect. Sin City, while great in my eyes, just doesn't cut it for others.

Holy SHIT! Jarhead is going to be fucking huge. This is probably either number one or number two in my must-see-movie list this holiday season. I think its going to be our generation's definitive war film.

yeah i agree with you here. Cronenberg's intentions were to polarize a seemingly perfect life with the demons that could potentially live inside all of us. he did so by using the all the right cliches. The perfect marraige, the 50's serial dialogue, the small town cafe, and the high school bully. his ability to mesh this domestic tranquility with the jarring violence and awkward sexuality was brilliant in my opinion. but i certainly understand why there will be those who didn't like it. but as for me, i thought the performances were top notch(*william hurt was nothing short of incredible. i wouldn't be surprised if that was one of those one scene oscar noms*).

Crash was a great, great film. probably the best ensemble cast of the year. however, it was spread far to thin, and at times, it was way too pretentious, and over the top in trying to get across the whole racism card.

Sin City was fun to watch, but really lost it's steam towards the end, but it certainly has it's following like you said, and that's great.

There's this movie coming out soon called Good Night, and Good Luck that deals with the McCarthy era that looks like it's going to be amazing.
yes i put that in my list. i had a chance to see a screening. at the very least, it's extremely fascinating. George Clooney is turning into quite the filmmaker. David Straitharn is extremely good, and a very underrated actor.

and for personal reasons, Serenity
it sure would be great to see a writing nom. very fresh movie

You officially rock. Some times I still think its a genre specific film, but its quite universally well liked. It was a very fresh spin on the genre though, and I know Oscar's are not remotely likely, I really wish it gathered more box office support.

you can probably bank on a golden globe nom. not much else though...

i think given the budget, they've done well for themselves so far.

what about that Lords of The Rings movies. Heard they were good.

Kidding

Right now to me it looks like Jarhead is going to own most of the movie categories. Philip Seymour Hoffman is going to pull in best actor and I think Phoenix will be close behind him. I think Charlize will win Best Actress because the academy are absolute suckers for making yourself ugly. I think Matt Dillon wins best Supporting Actor for Crash and Thandie Newton best Supporting Actress.

assuming it lives up to the genius of Sam mendes, i could still see it getting snuffed at the oscars. the novel it's based on was controversial to some, and it could be played like fareinheit or passion, but i don't think it will address anything any other war movie has done. but i think im with you. if it's good, i see an acting nod, screenplay, maybe director, and a couple of tech awards. we'll see though. im so excited for this season.

thats true... this is the first movie i've seen with him listed as a prominant cast memeber. He was in Garden State, Salton Sea, Kinsey, etc... but i dont remember seeing him billed as someone noteworthy. This might be his first really big movie?.. i havent looked anything up, but it wouldn't suprise me.
