View Full Version : Nostalgia

The weekly nostalgia posts on the news page have apparently been doing their job pretty well, because lately i've been desperately nostalgic and i've been trying to get some music back into my collection that I loved back in "the day" but have since lost touch with.

Obviously "the day" means something different to everyone, but for me it was somewhere around 1999 - 2002. Amazing albums like Through Being Cool, Stay What You Are, Hello Rockview (released 1998 but you get the picture), Full Collapse, Nothing Gold Can Stay, Blue Skies, Broken Hearts and several others made it an incredible time to be a fan of this type of music. Great shows with solid lineups and cheap tickets were plentiful, and new bands were forming and breaking into "the scene" at a ridiculously fast pace.

I'd like to get a list of some of the good bands from this era going so we can reminisce, discuss, and hopefully check out bands we may have missed out on. Some of them are still around obviously, but plenty of them have since stopped making music unfortunately and with the music world constantly changing (and my computer crashing) it's hard to think of all these bands without some help.

I'll get it started with a few:

Fairweather:
Awesome Virginia band that recorded a couple really good albums then split up. I recommend the entire "If They Move...Kill Them" album.

Junction 18:
Really good, catchy band from MA. They stuck to New England a lot of the time but had a couple big tours with NFG and some others. I enjoyed everything they recorded and wish they stuck with it!

The Movielife:
I'm sure you all know about them. If you don't...you should. Good stuff.

Cooter:
Released a really good full length "Looking Up" and a solid split record with Slick Shoes. They then became Autopilot Off, signed to a major, and quickly faded away after a couple of overproduced records.

Lanemeyer:
New Jersey pop punk at it's finest....sorta. They were sloppy, and not particularly good to be honest...but they have a pure nostalgia type of feel about them for some reason and they have couple songs I just can not get sick of. Check out "My Very Own Winnie Cooper" if you can.

Anyone else have any recommendations/memories to share from the past?

Haha, they were supposed to open at a show I went to years and years back. I can't even remember whose show it actually was, but I just remember thinking they had a really funny name...then comes the day of the show and "Autopilot Off" is playing instead...they said someone sued them about their old name or something like that...anyways, I liked Autopilot Off's first EP. Their full-length after that was just average IMO so I lost interest.

Yeah it was a pretty sudden change because of a threatened lawsuit like you said. Their EP was definitely decent and catchy...but I totally agree that the next full length was very average...if even. I was a huge fan of this band (I must have seen them at least 12 times) and I wasn't remotely interested in that album. I tried to get into it but just couldn't do it. Lame.

Off the top of my head to add to this thread, I can think of Mustard Plug, Hot Rod Circuit, and anything and everything Less Than Jake...I'd add more and expand on my choices but I'm at work at the moment and technically shouldn't be writing this ha.

So am I, and neither should I..but whatever.

I went on a Hot Rod Circuit kick yesterday for the first time in a good 3-4 years. So good.

Ya, what's your favorite album? I'd say Sorry About Tomorrow and If I Knew Now What I Knew Then are pretty close, but for different reasons. Sorry About Tomorrow is easily accessible and showcases some great pop songwriting...but I also really love the grittier sound of If I Knew Now What I Knew Then..."Irish Car Bomb" is such a great song.

My favorite they did was probably "If It's Cool With You.." i'd have to say. I really like all of the first three a lot, and haven't even heard anything off the last two. I agree that "Irish Car Bomb" is an AWESOME song. That was the first one I ever heard by them and it got me hooked.

I have Reality's Coming Through...I think it's just OK. I've only listened to it like 6 times and it didn't inspire me to buy their last album.

Back to the Digger comment, I definitely remember them and I think I saw them a couple times years back...I don't think I ever listened to them aside from a couple Hopeless Records comps though.

Check out Monte Carlo...that's my favorite album, it's really good.

All good recs. I can't believe how difficult it is to find stuff by Junction 18 and Lanemeyer. They were fairly big in the scene at least from what I remember of those days. I'll give my input on some of those nostalgic albums as well when I get back from class or later on sometime.

Seriously. Sometimes it's impossible to find stuff by bands that seemed fairly successful back then. It's frustrating!

For sure, If they move... is an amazing album and gets almost no love on here. I bring it up from time to time but I don't know if people just don't care for it or what.

It's SO good! Beginning to end it's one great song after another. Very underrated for sure.
