First off, to be honest, I need help with an assignment.

1) What is current immigration policy?
2) What are its positive and negative effects?
3) What alternative policies have been proposed and by whom?
4) What are the strengths and weaknesses of these policies according to their proponents and opponents? You MUST address both US and Mexican perspectives.
5) Based on the above, which policy would be best, in your opinion and why?

For you anti-Bush people. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/17/AR2005101701798.html)

This is useful. (http://www.cis.org/index.cgi)

The only shitty thing about immigrants coming into this country is that most mexicans are catholic. And that means more votes for conservatives......sorry, that was a little harsh.....I'm only kiddin' bay-beh

if you had intelligence, you'd realize you'd have to be a citizen to vote.

This is what information I have gathered thus far:

What is current immigration policy?
An exercise in futility. We strive to remain a cultural 'melting pot' but at the same time want to control the flow of people into this country.

What are its positive and negative effects?
Positive effects are that America is still considered a place where people can go and have a stable future (at least to a degree). Other positives are the benefits that immigrants create (workforce, namely). The negatives are that controlling immigration become near impossible.

What alternative policies have been proposed and by whom?
Many have proposed deportation or lack of 'low-skill' immigration, which would lower the numbers of immigrants coming across the borders. George J. Borjas, a social policy professor and author, was a giant advocate of the latter.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of these policies according to their proponents and opponents? You MUST address both US and Mexican perspectives.

From the United States side of things, deportation would not win any favor, but eliminating low-skill workers would be ideal. This would result in less immigration, but it would also provide the workforce with relatively stable and skilled individuals. From the Mexican side of things, I am sure anyway it is cut it ends up feeling like we are closing the door. But overall, I think it would be positive there too, because it would put them in good eyes throughout the world and the nation.

Based on the above, which policy would be best, in your opinion and why?

I believe if we were to tighten our policy and require that people entering this country have certain base amount of skill and credentials, we could be off to a good start. We would be well off having more strict border enforcement as well, but until then, we can only wait. If certain factors such as those mentioned could be implemented, it would be a great benefit, only allowing those who will be productive and in turn, beneficial to the society.

Legal immigration is perfectly fine by me, but it is very hard to get your foot in the door for that. By that, I mean they are not coming to America just to purposely upset us. It really is an act of desperation. I think something should be done to fix the problem, instead of eliminating the inconvenience. America is an extremely wealthy nation, and Mexico for example, is a very poor nation. It is not just the fact that Mexicans want to earn money to send home, but it is the fact that they are employed illegally to do so. They pay no taxes, drive without a license or insurance, and trash where ever they are. Since it is not their country they, do not care about it. This is not all Mexicans though, this is pretty much those that do not take this country for granted. They literally trash stores and neighbor hoods with out a care because it is "their culture". People say, "who would do the jobs no one else wants?"; plenty of people. I realize that it is hard to get into the country legally, but it is aliens that are making it harder for those people.
I realize that a lot of illegal aliens that are detrimental, but not all of them. The job situation, what most people seem to ignore is that when illegal aliens are paid tax-free wages, they are usually way below minimum wage, and they are just as much at fault, if we are going to point fingers regarding the economical problems. If people would stop hiring illegal aliens, they would probably stop coming. [However, if I was a Mexican, and I knew that somebody would hire me in America, I would probably do the same.] Besides, taxation is unconstitutional as it is. If I felt like fighting the case, I wouldn't pay taxes either.

Illegal immigration allows Mexicans the opportunity to quickly get into the United States of America quickly find work. They will then manage to send the money back to their families in Mexico who have nothing because of their corrupt government. It also helps to fill the jobs that Americans do not want such as farm work. Though I do not agree with that, I see that as a pro point of their view.

Pro point: There would be almost no agriculture in the United States if it was not for illegal immigrants. The United States agriculture is based upon the work of illegal Mexican workers. They are doing what is best for them and the people they love. Good for them.

Con point: The social acceptability of racism is sky rocketing because of illegal immigration. One of my biggest cons is the fact that they have killed our emergency rooms in hospitals. When they get sick or hurt, they go to an emergency room (since they do not have a doctor) and they do not pay. Emergency rooms all over Southern California for example have closed because of this exact problem.

Personally, to be honest, I think it is absurd that these people have nothing and come here to work for about one dollar an hour at some farm, and we complain about how this is affecting our lives. They are doing what they have to do to provide for their families. I would consider them irresponsible if they did not. If they were willing to be active participants as citizens, then I suggest that they should be made into legal United State citizens. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are Mexican. It has to do with the fact that they abuse our services and leave us laying their to die when it comes to those services. When you have to wait seven years to get your green card, the legal citizenship is not much of an option. They are simply providing for their families in the only way possible for them under the circumstances. Excluding the ones who become freeloaders, what we call "abusing our services" they call "surviving". At least they are surviving at the expense of a country that is as well-fed as America. In our disregard for human life, we would rather exchange our mild discomfort for their suffering. We are not willing to coexist in order to establish a better way of life for those people. Not that it would solve the problem, but it affects human lives. Everybody looks at it politically and economically, and always fails to look at it ethically. Unfortunately, the majority of Tucson is affected. When you need to get to an emergency room in Pima county and the nearest one is sixty minutes away instead of fifteen, it makes a big difference. Arizona is going down the drain because of economic reasons. A lot of the economy problem is because of the illegal aliens.

The ethical aspect is a tough aspect. They are human and they deserve to be treated as humans.

Without bothering to do any research on the situation or really knowing anything about the situation, I don't give a fuck how many immigrants come into this country or if they become "official" citizens, as long as they are working and not moochers.
