Alex Smith was gonna be the starter the rest of the way anyway and now he doesnt have to look over his shoulder and worry about rattay taken his spot.Good move by the niners I still think they should of kept smith on the bench the whole season, give him the carson palmer treatment.

Well Kitna was doing fairly well so that made it easier for the Bengals to do that. But with the Niners going nowhere this year it makes sense for them to get him so real game expirience.

haha oh shit. so my team got Tim Rattay...I guess that's cool although Griese is doing well right now, so I hope Gruden doesn't make a wrong move starting Rattay while Griese is still doing well.

Tampa just keeps stockpiling mediocre QB's from other teams. now they have Griese (even though he's injured), Luke McCown AND Tim Rattay sitting behind Chris Simms, a mid-round draft pick. Hmm. I love the Bucs though, they're my other favorite team (behind the hometown Bills) and I'd love to see Chris Simms do well at the NFL level, he's been waiting for long enough to actually start.

I think the bigger Trade was AJ Feeley to the Chargers which indefinetly seals the fate of either Phillip Rivers or Drew Brees. One of them will without a doubt not be a Charger after this season, and where do they go?

get rid of edge, it's alot easier to find a running back to run in that team's setup, than find a great up and comer like wayne, who will be around when harrison is gone in 5.

You know what? this might be alot easier if we deal with it this way.
What DON'T the 49ers need?
QB (Alex Smith)
SS (Tony Parrish)
LOLB (Julian Peterson)
....yeah. that leaves 19 pisspoor position players.

Alex Smith is piss poor until proven otherwise.
I can't imagine Reggie Wayne and Harrison being on the same roster for 5 more years. I also have a feeling Harrison doesn't like the emergence of Wayne at all. I really don't care what Indy does this off-season as long as they win the Super Bowl. That way the "Manning = Marino" argument can die for good, and the Manning > Marino one can come out.

THAT IS ONE OF THE WORST THINGS I'VE EVER HEARD
EVEN IF YOU DON'T CONSIDER MARINO THE GREATES QB OF ALL TIME, THERE IS NO SINGLE ACTIVE PLAYER THAT CAN EVEN BE COMPARED TO HIS GREATNESS. THE ONLY SEMI-DECENT ARGUMENT YOU CAN MAKE RIGHT NOW IS FOR FAVRE, AND I DON'T EVEN AGREE WITH THAT. MANNING HAS BEEN GREAT THUS FAR, AND YES, HE BROKE ONE OF MARINO'S MANY RECORDS, BUT A LASTING CAREER IS A DIFFERENT STORY. I'M NOT SAYING MANNING DOESN'T HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE A GREAT, BUT NOT QUITE YET. HIS IS ONE OF THE GREAT QB'S OF NOW, NOT ALL TIME.

do you realize how difficult it is to have a long lasting career?
and a successful one?
and it's very hard to be "on pace" to break any of the other SINGLE season records that Marino holds

If Favre plays 2-3 more seasons, he'll also go ahead of Marino in attempts, completions, TDs, yards to be #1 all time statistically.
You do realize I'm talking about Peyton Manning, not a young QB like Eli or Palmer? You know, Peyton Manning, the guy with 2 straight league MVPs, 6 straight 4000 yard seasons, 7 straight 25+ TD pass seasons, 118 consecutive starts (only trailing Favre)? He's been the model of consistency in the NFL for QB's.
Marino's running out of single season records. Passer rating and comp. % by a rookie was taken by Roethlisberger. Manning took the TD passes record, the most consecutive 4+ TD games record, and tied Dan for most 4+ TD games in a season. Culpepper took the total yardage record last year.
From nfl.com, I see Dan is left with his 5084 yards passing, and his 4 400 yard passing games in a season. Those are the only single season records he has left on the official site. There may be some other records that you'd have to tinker with the numbers to get, but probably nothing major. And I think those two records will go down with each other. Some guy will just lob it up all year and have some 400 yard games and break the 5100 mark.

He's also about 12,000 yards behind Marino right now, which makes him very unlikely to catch him.
CULPEPPER TOOK THE TOTAL YARDAGE RECORD LAST YEAR? NO
5084 > 4717 (I'm talking about passing records)
I'm not denying Manning's consistancy as of now. But if there was one man that Manning has resembled thus far, it's Marino. Peyton has a long way to go, but he has the potential and the pure passer talent (dispite his crazy footwork in the pocket) to be the next marino (especially if he continues to be the best QB without a superbowl. The TD record last year was the first of Marino's major records to be surpassed in a long time.

Passing and Rushing, aka total yardage. And yes, Culpepper had more. I didn't think much of it when someone said it on a forum, but then I heard it during some pre-season games this year for Minnesota. It's a pretty impressive record.
Manning's already been better than Marino in a lot of efficiency areas. He has a much better completion percentage and passer rating than Dan ever did.

I fucking hate Manning.
Anyhow, this was a smart deal by the niners. Really all they need to do is pick up a back with their likely #1 pick, retool their O-line a bit and maybe shuffle some defense, and they will be competitive again. And when they are, I shall rejoice.

If Manning continues putting up numbers like he has (or even slightly smaller numbers) for the rest of his career, and he wins a Super Bowl (which I think he can this year), eventually, he will be considered better than Marino.

I'm saying he was very good but until you have that ring, you are not great. Great QB's lead their teams to Super Bowls and then to Super Bowl victories and over the years Marino had to have had some potential on his team but he failed to come through when it counted the most. That to me is not a "great" QB.

If you don't consider Marino elite, that's horrible, but to not even call him great? You're insane.

don't get me wrong, he was a very good QB, one of the best but he still never made it to that extra plateau of Super Bowl winners. Favre has a ring, amazing stats, and record for most consecutive starts which is why Favre is better in my opinion and that makes him "great."
