Give me your top ten favorite artists, and i'll slap a score out of 10.0 on it, and maybe a few comments.

edit: 8/10/09, i stole this idea from mht.

Brand New and Thrice are so played out now. I like that you have MCS on there, and Death Cab is okay, but the rest is pretty bleh. 3.2/10.0

I get a feeling you will rate mine abour a 2 lol just based on the artists you have in your profile but I rate it a 10 so thats what makes it interesting haha. No specific order.

Saves The Day
New Found Glory
The Early November/Ace Enders
Rancid
Valencia
Sugarcult
Blink 182
Fall Out Boy
Midtown
Jacks Mannequin

I had about 5-6 more that easily could have made my list. I kept it to top 10 in the punk/pop punk/indie/ whatever scene. Nothing like Tom Petty although he might just take my list as #1.

TEN is solid, good nostalgia pick, Midtown meh, Valenica had some okay tunes on their debut, Jacks the same. And who didn't like TTTYG amirite? I'll give you a 3/10.0. TEN was your strongest pick.

Owen
American Football
Blink 182
Mineral
Hyro Da Hero
Park
Armor For Sleep
Jimmy Eat World
New Found Glory
Latterman

I don't even know where to begin. But Owen, American Football, Mineral are good, Armor For Sleep had some okay ones off WTDWYD, JEW has good tunes. How about a 4.3/10.0

I limited it because I had a hard enough time narrowing it down just to these haha. Most of these would be in my actual top ten but so would Tom Petty and other classic rock people. Maybe some rap groups too. Narrowing it down to ten would take a real long time.

Neutral Milk Hotel
Rancid
Saves The Day (anything up to and including Stay What You Are only...if that counts?)

Hot Rod Circuit (First 3 albums)

This is a more real list. NMK, The Shins, weird to see FSF pop up. The rest are meh, Coheed had a solid album, Thursday had a few. 5.8/10.0. I can't do Saves The Day or Alk3.

stop degrading all us brand new fans radiohead is surely more "played out" :-d

Radiohead is far superior to Brand New though, that's the key difference haha. And this all based on my tastes anyway haha.

Yeah I just forgot about Jawbreaker and Lifetime, which is why I changed it haha. I hate doing top 10 lists though because I always feel like I am leaving out all of these important bands that need to be in a list to do my tastes justice. It's a tough one, but i was impressed with your list.

I'll take my hypothetical score and run.

haha well, I&W writes the best lyircs on that list, and seeing as i only moderately enjoyed his full band sound, i see him mostly as an acoustic/vocal guy. factor in the idea that music that is intricate and plays with several different styles is something that i value, its hard for a guy like that to REALLY compete with my top favorites. but i have loads of respect for the man.

but dude you're surprised to see flaming lips that high? have you heard my avatar? that shit is some incredible and wildly creative songwriting and production too, im surprised more people dont think so.

haha its true but im afraid you may be in the minority by thinking northstar > brand new. maybe they were comparable in deja days as both wrote top-notch pop-punk albums but brand new made TDAG and just left other scene bands in the dust.

yeahh im looking into it. idk its hard to rank someone as a favorite based off of one album although i did that for quite a few. if one album just gets you, it GETS you. thats why favorite album's lists are more accurate for people's tastes cause every album is different.

oh yeah well any time i make a favorites list its all about what is imapcting me the most RIGHT THAT MOMENT, i dont like being historical cause then that would put a lot of pop-punk on my list, which still holds a nostalgic place in my heart because of how important it was to my teenage years, but thats not accurate since i dont listen to it and respect it and enjoy it now like i used to. thats kind of what drives my inclination to get into discussions about pop-punk bands that i havent listened to regualrly in nearly a year now.

but i can also tell by how ridiculously well-written and innovative and how deep i perceived that flaming lips album to be, that its for sure one of my top notch favorites. to be clear i havent been listening to radiohead long at all either but, i just KNOW.

Eh, not really, i'm gettin really selective on my Death Cab recently, which is weird since i'm seeing them next month. I don't know, it sort of is all of a sudden. But it's not getting enough points on these ratings, but it's helping.

one thing I guess I'm sort of confused about is a band being "played out" on a list affecting the score. I mean yes, it seems that everyone and their mother puts a band like The Beatles on a list, but thats not something you should put someone at fault for if those certain bands really are close to them. not a complaint, just a point I thought I'd bring up

yeah thats kind of disappointing for me, but its cool tastes change. idk i got all 6 of death cab's albums, i absolutely LOVE five of those six (the other is just okay and barely worthwhile because of the atmosphere it produces), and while i love them for a comPLETELY different reason than i love radiohead they still deserve that #2 spot easily.

What it ultimate comes down to is that these lists are all solely based on my likes and dislikes, so being "played out" is all subjective. Brand New is played out to me, and i judge according to me. These ratings are completely unfair, hopefully people know that when they post their lists.

yeah its a key stage really, i was taking it slowly for awhile cause i wanted to get all the enjoyment i could out of pop-punk, but once it started to really get old i just pushed this transition into overdrive and its been so rewarding, found so many different ways that i can enjoy and perceive music. as far as manchester orchestra, i feel that they are a very watered down example of that sound and really just a transitional band but hey that may just be me.

Shoooooooot. You are hit or miss as well. NMH, ES, IW, are your best. Kanye and Eminem turn me off here, if you had some 90s Hip Hop you'd be getting a better score. The others are a bit too wishy-washy for my taste. Although Weatherbox isn't. Eh, 4.7/10.0

I can't do Tool. Just can't do it.

haha, you know what, I just laugh off all their "complexity" and "deepness" and all that, they write some really good alternative rock style riffs and they are actually getting pretty decent at instrumental/atmospherics too...I love "disposition" off Lateralus...also their songs are pretty fun to play on guitar hero world tour. we love playing parabola.

what i don't like are tool fans. you know what i'm talking about. when they write songs about aliens it makes me laugh, i don't take the band srsly at all, except maybe the songs about Maynard's mother from the last record, those have some decent lyrics to them.

Yeah that's the part about Tool that sucks. I mean honestly, their music doesn't sound like it is on drugs, how much more straightforward rocking can you be than some of their singles? Parabola, The Pot, stuff like that, it's not like I'm trippin out here. I've just been listening to Engine Down a lot lately and miss them somewhat, so I threw them on. Plus I'm in love with Denali and I'm stoked about their reunion.

David Bazan is probably one of the best songwriters of our generation. and yeah, idk about Radiohead, I loved OK Computer and another one of their cds (I forgot the name offhand), but I can't for the fucking life of me get into Radiohead's newer stuff.

yeah its a key stage really, i was taking it slowly for awhile cause i wanted to get all the enjoyment i could out of pop-punk, but once it started to really get old i just pushed this transition into overdrive and its been so rewarding, found so many different ways that i can enjoy and perceive music. as far as manchester orchestra, i feel that they are a very watered down example of that sound and really just a transitional band but hey that may just be me.

I don't want to make a full transition because some of those albums hold a special memory/time in my life. But I am getting more and more interested in everything outside of the "scene". I figure it would be ignorant to just listen to one type of music when there's 1000's out there. Just, a chance to broaden my musical horizons, ya know?

I know what you mean. I like some stuff that might build my AP.net cred, but honestly, they aren't my favorite bands and they're not necessarily my favorite albums either. Like I said, I just can't let Neutral Milk Hotel be on my favorite bands list since I only have one album of theirs, and although it is quite wonderful, that just doesn't work. Same with other artists like Nick Drake, I love Pink Moon, but I am not really that interested in his other records so I wouldn't say he is one of my favorite artists.

You snag a 7.9/10.0 Plus your bonus two.

Completely tangential rant: It would be nice if people realized there was Post-Rock beyond Godspeed You! and Battles.

Haha there are, the Post-Rock thread is a great place to discuss that. You should join in that thread.

I don't want to make a full transition because some of those albums hold a special memory/time in my life. But I am getting more and more interested in everything outside of the "scene". I figure it would be ignorant to just listen to one type of music when there's 1000's out there. Just, a chance to broaden my musical horizons, ya know?

yeah thats good, and just because you're broadening your horizons doesnt mean you have to hate all scene music afterwards, even though a loss of interest in it and a condescending attitude towards the scene in general happens naturally. for me two things happened:

1) i thought some scene music was "deep" until i heard music that is ACTUALLY "deep" songwriting/production/experimentation-wise (and also lyrics-wise in a few cases), and while my appreciation for certain scene albums didnt vanish, i realized how one dimensional it was and that it generally had one simple form of appeal. meanwhile, a band like radiohead has multifaceted appeal on most of their records. i found that a lot of those scene bands really only had a myopic variant of pop appeal (i.e. raw teenage emotion and/or angst), and a lot of the bands ive been getting into lately retain a pop sound (albeit a much different one) to some extent, but theres something bigger and more profound underneath that accessibility that i couldnt find the words to explain to you.

2) i thought the scene had a fair amount of "diversity" and that the bands sounded different, but then i ventured outside the scene and found that a lot of the more worthwhile bands REALLY stand on their own and are just not comparable to any music i know of at least -- that isnt to say that any of them are doing what hasnt been done but they tend to have their own unique BLEND of established styles, some of which come from half a century ago while others may come from other countries. and again when you go back and make the comparison to the scene you realize that in context the scene bands really arent that different from each other either. a few albums might stand out for making the sound better and more complex than everybody else but its generally done in an almost identical format -- all the ones i was into mostly started with the same framework nirvana used to write their songs, then for style they blended watered down versions of melodic hardcore/pop-punk with lite-rock/midwestmo from the 90s, and occassionally added in a technique cheaply derived from electronica/ambient music as a vain gimmick attempt to set them apart from the other bands, and that was their sound. its amazing how many pre-2005 pop-punk bands followed that exact formula verbatim, and the only difference between them really is the vocals and lyrics (but even then they all started making their voices more nasal and thin than they really are, and using the same metaphors and the same tongue-in-cheek one-liner lyrical styles). nowadays they even get the same exact audio engineering jobs done on their albums and the voices/lyrics/musical arrangements are almost indistinguishable.

so with all that realized i kind of figured i dont give a fuck about the scene as a whole anymore hahaha. in its defense, it does have that nostalgic teenage emotional appeal that can hardly be found anywhere else but that does little to salvage a band like something corporate when there are bands like the flaming lips and animal collective out there who are doing a million things at once in each of their albums, while STILL retaining a heavy focus on pop and accessibility. but hey i do still enjoy an occassional listen of the scene bands i consider to be the best, and dont let my personal experience spiel detract from your own personal enjoyment of that kind of music. when you're ready to move on, you will.

Anyway, seeing this list reminds me how weird it is to watch kids who were listening to "scene" oriented shit, jump ship for what is deemed cooler around here. I can never tell if it's actually genuine evolution or an insecure kid wanting to impress a different set of people. Interesting thing to watch over the years.

I don't want to be rude, but were you trying to be cool by adding lesser known artist? If so, then Spoon, Gatsbys and The Mars Volta would have sufficed for Grammatics, Chasing Victory and Castledoor (not in that door mind you). 6.2/10.0

Uh, or, that was my most played on Zune. Take your pick. Seeing as each of the eleven Castledoor songs I own have been played upwards of 40 times, Chasing Victory I've listened to for years, and Grammatics has already worked its way onto the most played artists of mine in the short time I've been aware of them -- I'd say it's much more likely that.

I think if I'd been trying to add lesser known artists, I'd have snuck in something a little more "trendy" than those. Don't believe my opinions on those artists? Plenty of proof scattered throughout AP to hold them up.

I would give this way too big list a 4.1/10. You get some points for having Catch for Us the Foxes as your favorite mwY album, since it is also my favorite. Zao is a decent choice, but Self-Titled is definitely not their second best by any means. Norma Jean, ETID, BTBAM, ugh...those lose points. Dillinger Escape Plan is always nice, but Calculating Infinity earns more Troggy points. Also there is not much variety here, so that does not earn you much favor.

Those acting petulant as a result of their list being granted a low score by a fellow poster is hilarious.

what I'm listening to a lot right now is...

brand new
the mars volta
the sound of animals fighting
circle takes the square
midtown
the receiving end of sirens
she & him

I make my own music from the recorded sounds of my neighbor's mentally challenged dog making love to the toaster while plugged in and translate it to musical brain thought waves powered by will and love.

Yeah. I wear blazers with ironic t-shirts too!

That's so hip that I have no choice but to assume you were friends with Jack White pre-White Blood Cells.

Brand New means you're clearly a iconoclast, defying the norms of scene culture and proudly proclaiming "I'm a unique music listener with individualistic ideals and thoughts and opinions of merit and substance."

CTtS implies you like useless merch.

She & Him would suggest you're straight.

A Chiodos dude's project is indicative of your proclivity to wear a form-fitting v-neck swearer with black skinny jeans because "you don't conform to a particular style, man!"

Volta? So...you like bombastic and pompous noise that attempts to be Experimental but really just sounds like Mahavishnu Orchestra?.

If this were 2001, your enjoyment of Midtown would make you "underground."

Clearly, you're a man with a taste for the finer musaks! Teach me the ways. 89 thermal nitted American Apparel v-neck sweaters/10

"If you'd read my posts in which I tell everyone I'm sincere, you'd know I was being sincere because I told everyone I am."

You're too easy, Ryan. Ha.

hahahaha you're hard.

....

Other than parts of Cassadaga, Oberst hasn't really done anything "alt country." Those kids are silly. Give them some Mekons.

yeah cassadaga is what i was aiming at really. im like the only person who thinks thats some of his best work.

I'll never when he called me up talking about Warner Brothers and I'm like "look Jack, remember how we struggled in Detroit like it was 'Nam to get our music out?! I was about the sound, brother. It was about the fucking thunder. I lost a lot of good groupies out there...What, man, what? You want moneys? Honeys? What, man?1 I'll suck your dick when you need it. I'll buy you White Castle. Don't sell your soul."

It was the weirdest thing, because the voice on the other end kept saying "Todd, I have no idea who Jack White is, but as your parole officer, I must insist you stop calling me by that name...and I'd like a White Castle."

I thought it was Oberst's best work since LIFTED, but then, I'm one of the few who thinks most of his work post-LIFTED was pedestrian.

Love them. That Buddy Holly song was rad.

You must shoehorn it a Northbrook lyric. Don't try to make it sound natural. Make it incredibly ostentatious and gaudy. Then, give me co-writing credits.

Oh, and I'm still waiting on those liner notes, ass. It's been three days since I've got some. Need some liner notes.
