As you can guess by the avatar, I'm a big Daily Show nut. Who thinks Stephen Colbert's show is gonna be any good?

Its probably gonna be better than most traditional after-the-daily show shows. Colbert is awesome and deserves it.
I was hoping it would air fri-sat-sun, that way i could be up on the day late news 7 days a week. At worst i think this show will be a jon stewart less extention of the daily show. which is fine by me.
Slightly off topic, does anyone else wish they would are much older episodes or maybe do a best of dvd every year? there are tons of old stuff i love and wish i could watch it again.

Its probably gonna be better than most traditional after-the-daily show shows. Colbert is awesome and deserves it.Probably. Ever since Tough Crowd, there really haven't been any good shows to compliment the Daily Show. This one might, only since it's made by the same people.
Slightly off topic, does anyone else wish they would are much older episodes or maybe do a best of dvd every year? there are tons of old stuff i love and wish i could watch it again.Yeah, that would be awesome. I'd love to see some older episodes. Especially from the 2000 elections. I hear that stuff was really good.

I was just talking with my parents about this show last week and how we wished it was still on. It wasnt the best show, but it was good to follow up daily show and every once in a while there was a great comedian on it.

I know. I thought Greg Giraldo was great on it. Even though Colin's terrible at speaking, alot of it was pretty funny.

Eh, I would go with Stewart. I think of it in terms like.. who would I rather see as the president? John Stewart because Colbert's character would make for a horrible president.
Stewart really annoys me now I've started watching Colbert. Colbert's character is just truely a brilliant piece of comedy. Throw in things like The Word and The DaColbert Report, and some good guests and you have a show that is just amazing comedy.
The Daily Show relies too much on whacky humour that makes little sense, while Colbert is just in love with himself and delivers on most of his punchlines.

This thread makes me so fucking angry. Colbert is so forced. He lacks he natural, personal charm that Stewart has. Colbert just tries wayyyy too hard and it's not funny half the time. If you don't "get" Jon Stewart's humor then you're either a) dumb or b) no fun. If you like spoon-fed drivel then I can see why somebody might like Colbert more, but anybody with good taste in comedy should appreciate Stewart way more.

i honestly like both of them, but "The Word" is what sets Colbert higher for me. Those tend to be hilarious, even if nothing else is.
But Jon Stewart wrote America: The Book, so that might change things is taken into account.
DeadCityScars
08/11/06, 12:39 PM
Colbert's comedy could be forced, but it isn't. He handles it well. And his show gives him more freedom to do funnier bits. On the Daily Show, the only funny bits to me are the opening news and the mock news exclusives they put on from time to time. The interviews are bland & boring and the video feeds are rarely funny. The new Jon Stuart sounds forced. Like the attention to his show is starting to get to him a little bit.
But I like both. Just Colbert, more.

Stewart's lost his edge.
the recent episodes havent been funny at all. Both shows have repeating gags, of course, but The Daily Show's gags are annoying now. Everytime they have a correspondent, they mention the word balls or penis around 5 times. and then a lot of other jokes just fall flat, like the photoshopped pictures. Stewart was awesome during the 2004 Election but right now he's not trying.
Colbert is a much better character. I prefer his deadpan-serious style to Stewart
anyway The Daily Show needs Demitri Martin to be a fulltime castmember to liven up the show
A picasso blue
08/11/06, 03:10 PM
also, Colbert has much better guests. sometimes Stewart has lame comedians, like Marlon Wayans promoting Little Man or Paul Giamatti. But Colbert's guests are never dumb comedians or songwriters who pretend to care about politics. theyre always senators, congressmen, newsanchors, authors, and philosophers.

Stewart doesn't seem to be as into it as he used to. Colbert is always brimming with enthusiasm and the fact that he acts like a complete asshole most of the time is hilarious, such as how he introduces a guest. Normally, the guest gets a nice applause when they walk to the desk, but Colbert has them blandly sitting at a table on the other side of the stage and Colbert hams up the applause like it's for him. It's the simple comedic elements like this that The Daily Show can't really do that has started pushing the Colbert Report over the top for me.

But honestly. Stewart has gone downhill. The majority of his comedy is this: Cut to senator making stupid comment, then cut back to Stewart making funny face, audience laughs. There are at least 3 of those jokes per episode.

I enjoy The Daily Show far more, but The Colbert Report is still great. The fact that he can maintain the character in any situation is great. Him on The O'Reily Factor, staying in character the entire time was great.

I'd say he's about on par with Jon. They both have their great nights and they both have their lousy nights. Although I would love it if Stephen was still doing the Daily Show.

The Daily Show only came to NZ TV about 6 months ago. So I have a few years to wait for Colbert :(
Is there an online site where you can watch all the episodes like allsp.com for South Park?
I love it. My favourite part of the show is usually The Word.

I think it will be great, possibly even surpass the Daily Show in humor. Considering it will be a satire, I have a hunch Colbert will coin a lot of pop culture phrases. My prediction, it will probably be nominated for an Emmy but ultimately lose out to Barry Manilow. Then again, that's just a prediction.

Well done..
It's horrible that this is one of the first shows immediately hurt by the writers strike.. It was a good way to end the day.

Hahaha that was actually pretty funny...and definitely got their point across. However, it also made them look like they have been really bored while striking/picketing.
that was a good idea. too bad they couldn't get that on the real tv air.
Since it's been back on Tv, it's been getting better and better. While the Daily Show seems to be slipping...a lot. Has anyone else been enjoying The Colbert Report more than The Daily Show lately?

Colbert is good, but you can't deny that Jon Stewart is awesome. I don't think his shows been slipping, I think that Colbert's show is just ridiculously funny.

Jon Stewart is awesome, but since the writer's strike, he has been a lot less funny imo, while Colbert is still the man. Though, hopefully The Daily Show will be back to its usual self soon since the writer's strike is almost over.

Jon is doing fine without the writers. Stephen is just as good as he was before because he's an improv master, but Jon has still been good. When the writers come back, all that's going to happen is that they're going to add more correspondent pieces, which are the least funny elements of the show usually.

they've been doing okay, but I still think that the opening headline segment (for lack of a better term) on the Daily Show is still lacking huge.

I've always like Stewart more because he appeals to a more intellectual crowd. I haven't really seen any slippage in either show, you just have to realize that The Daily Show is going to be worse off because Stewart can't write half of his stuff.
Colbert is great to though.

Yeah, he's done better without writers than most because he's a master improviser.

I was at the Colbert Report this afternoon, and in between his Q&A with the audience and the start of the show, they played Neutral Milk Hotel's "Holland, 1945". Actually, all the music was real good (a pearl jam song too). Funny as shit live too. If you're in NY i suggest you see this show live..
Anyway, let's discuss his greatness.

Colbert's book is one of the funniest things ever but his show is so hit or miss. Sometimes it's really unique and creative (his Better Know a District segment with Dan Maffei was EPIC) but other times it's the same old "Oh, I'm pretending to be a conservative but I'm really a liberal" bit. Jon Stewart is more consistently funny although his interview with Will Ferrell was an abortion.
