I don't think I've heard any "artist" in a long time that irks me quite as bad as this guy. Anyone agree?

Hes not fake... He speaks real stuff.. talks about parties and shit.. Not about ima go out sell 23521 pounds of coke and kill a mothafucker
some good stuff on his mixtape, his a milli freestyle is bananas and the i love college song isnt really for me. his subject matter and wordplay r good but his flow and voice remind me a lot of eminem.

Yea I noticed that on a few tracks... Though you CAN tell the diffference if someone just heard it really quick it could be mistaken. My mom passed the doorway and was like "Did Em FINALLY release a new CD"

Alright god damn guys. First off, his Mixtape is nothing like, "I Love College". Thats just a fun, chill song, that ya know is gonna catch. Its a single. Thats what its there for. But I'd much rather him be popular than fucking Kanye or something. He's got flow, and he can definitely freestyle. Check out his song, "Just Listen". Most his songs are just fun, but they're a hell of a lot better than whats leading "Rap" today. I think mainstream rap is the only musical genre to actually be degressing.

But really, stop ripping apart one thing like, "I GO TO A PARTY AND THEY DIDNT YELL FRESHMAN!" Alright, so ONE thing didn't happen. But every single thing in that song has happened at one point or another at college parties I have been to. So it's absolutely retarded for people to say "That's not real. That doesn't happen." I love college is the biggest anus of a song. I hate the "you've never been to a college party then" argument. Just because this song describes what happens at college parties doesn't make it a good song. A good song is good because it is well written, and this song is not well written at all. People just like it because it appeals to their lame college lifestyles. I'll bet you guys would even like that City Lights song. Ugh.

First of all, chugging cheap adjunct lagers and getting mad wasted with some bros isn't really my idea of a good time, so no I don't "relate." Second, whether or not I "relate" to a song isn't exactly a criteria I use for deciding whether I like it or not anyway.
Regardless, whether I relate to it or not this song is terrible. Quite possibly the most boring, cookie cutter beat I've heard all year, terrible lyrics, an almost total lack of anything resembling a decent flow, etc. It doesn't even fall under the criteria for "stupid backpacker shit that college students like" because it's so ridiculously stupid (without any of the fun of commercial rap). Just awful.

unless youve listened to this mixtape by asher in the link above (before he got famous off his single which i agree is startin to get annoyin) and not just "i love college," any opinion you have on asher roth, positive or negative, is not valid at all. and dont listen to it if you already made up yur mind about him cuz yur that closeminded. and dont listen to it if yur one of those fuckheads who say "you can spell crap without rap."
its amazing how immediately people on this website will label him a "tool" cuz of his first single. i mean im not gonna lie if that was the first track i heard by asher id think that he was kind of a joke rapper. but i heard this mixtape about a year ago last june and i know that the kid has skills. his cannon verse is sick, his black mags verse is sick, his dey know verse is sick. as someone already mentioned, his a milli remix is sick too.
i love college could be annoyin, but not as annoyin as seein one of yur fave hiphop acts gettin written off cause his catchy single is poorly misrepresentin him and people just seem to hate on him. ud probably feel the same way if it was brand new or fall out boy or whatever other band is revered on this site.

and the beat had to be changed. it originally sampled "Say it aint so" by weezer but he couldnt get the rights to the sample, which is why the beat is so "cookie cutter."
i do agree with sentiment that no college party (at least the ones ive seen at uconn) is similar to what's described in i love college.

Because when you're a poor college kid you can afford good beer. I'm not quite sure what world you're living in, or what school your going to, but in the real world at most schools Miller Lite is actually not horrible considering the price, most people usually get worse than miller.
And I don't go to frats, nor do I like frats, and yet, I still enjoy the song and can relate to every single one of the lines... Now, if this song is so "obviously" about frats, I'm not talking about the video, I said SONG, then how can it apply to the people who don't step foot into the frats? Maybe because it's not simply about frats but college parties in general.
I'm not saying there's much of a "deep" meaning or anything like that. I'm not claiming it's the most well written or best song. But it's better than a lot of stuff out there, and is a good party anthem. Everybody who goes to my school knows the song, many enjoy it. My friends and I all enjoyed hanging out and listening to it. It's not SUPPOSED to be a deep song or whatever. People are trying to use that to make it seem bad, but that wasn't the intent of the song in any way. It was supposed to be a fun song about college parties. And that is exactly what the song is.

There's nothing real deep to it or anything, you don't have to think about it. Just take it for what it is and stop trying to make it something else.

A 12 pack of PBR is even cheaper than Miller Lite and doesn't taste quite as much like watered down piss. That's totally ignoring happy hours in bars and restaurants, drink specials, etc. I could probably find bars in Manhattan (where just a 6 pack of something like Heineken costs $12) where you can get a pint of a decent import for about the same price or slightly more than Miller Lite. I mean, when you go to concerts and things all beers are the same price anyway.
I'd rather go for cheap spirits than cheap beer myself, though. At least you can chase cheap vodka with something.
And I don't go to frats, nor do I like frats, and yet, I still enjoy the song and can relate to every single one of the lines... There are so many better party songs out there. I'd rather listen to a million commercial rap anthems than this shit. I mean, I bet you're the type that probably immediately writes off stuff like "Blame It On the Alcohol," aren't you?
I'm sorry, I just really don't think calling something "fun" is an excuse for it to not be good. There are plenty of albums I think of that are fun that are still interesting, and lots of fun albums I like that I don't try and excuse as being good (case in point: I spent all of yesterday listening to Teki Latex, including that terrible song he did with Feist).

When you're not 21 it's hard to really have much of a control over what alcohol you're getting. You can't go to the bar and order something or go anywhere and order something, so drink specials are really out of the question.
I would rather go with cheep vodka as well, but a preference on which type of alcohol really has no difference on whether you like the song or not.
Sure, maybe it's a frat party. But that doesn't really matter in the long run. Like I said, you might see it as a frat party, but I've been to many college parties(NOT frat parties) and have experianced the exact stuff that happens in the song. So if it's simply a college song about frats how would it be that me, who does not go to frats, still finds parties to be this way? It's not about frats, people don't get that. It's about college parties as a whole.
I'm not saying it's the best song in the world or anything, or even the best party song. It's just a fun song that we all liked at Penn State. Everyone knew the words to all of it, and it described pretty much ALL of the parties whether you're going to frats or a friends apartment. And no, I don't write songs off like that. I like that song as well.
How would you know what type of person I am? My favorite bands include blink-182, The Starting Line, The Ataris, Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, All Time Low, Valencia, Hit the Lights, The Gaslight Anthem, Brand New, etc.. I don't even really listen to much rap really, so I'm not a real critic on rap music. I didn't listen to it at all until this year, actually, and that was only because my roommate listened to a lot. So I learned to like it, and pretty much just started liking what he listened to because that's all I heard. So sure I like Asher Roth, but you can hardly judge what "type of person" someone is by one artist they listen to or if they go to college parties or not. I'm sure there's bands you like that I would say the same thing you would say about Asher Roth. Nobody likes all amazing bands, there's stuff that everyone likes that may not be the best in the world but whatever. At least it's not brokencyde, I think we can all agree on that.

I don't think he's a great rapper. He's alright, and makes fun catchy music. I'm not going to sit here and criticize his rapping talent, because I really don't care. Like I said, Im not a big rap fan or critic so if it sounds good to me I listen to it. I don't care if other people say "Man that's not good rap" or whatever because it sounds good enough to me. He has some good lines and fun songs and isn't singing all about raping women and "f***ing all the girls in the world."
He actually sings about other things than money, women, fame, power, killing people, etc. And that's one of the things I like about this guy. He's not all singing about how he wants to have sex with all these girls or how frivolous he wants to spend his money on absolutely nothing or how famous and powerful he is/ might possibly get. So much rap now is all about that stuff, and his stuff isn't. Whether you like him or not or think he's talented or not talented or whatever, at least you have to give that to him.

Whether you like him or not or think he's talented or not talented or whatever, at least you have to give that to him.
lol, way to prove my point about your taste in rap. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about, so just keep repeating yourself about how his songs are about "regular' college parties and not frats. They're all the same thing to me anyway.
At least it's not brokencyde, I think we can all agree on that.

I think it's hilarious that all these people bash Asher Roth after only hearing one song when they would shit their pants in anger if someone did that to their favorite band haha. These are the same people who hang out in Say Anything threads saying, "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too! isn't representative of their full body of work. It's just a fun, chill song."
Fuck you. It's just a catchy rap song made for people who party and who remember that sort of chill half-rap sound from the nineties.

Well the reason people have some sort of an issue with it. Its because even though he is a possibly a talented rapper, not that I think so... but just saying, he is clearly making a "sell out" tune with I love college, and that is hardly even subjective... he clearly made that song to make money, and I realize it is a business, but everyone knows if you make a tune like that... you will get shit, it is just a matter of time really, so I am not surprised at all that he will get shit for this for a long long time. Whether people like it or not honestly, it is bound to happen.

When Say Anything's song came out... was it all over MTV and every other major broadcast station? I don't think so (most people found SA on myspace), I can hardly see the comparison... MTV is causing this guys success on a national basis... yeah people will find his music regardless of the promotion, but no one can deny that MTV is really helping the promotion of this guy. Just like they help every other radio friendly artist to become somewhat of a sell out... I mean hell I am even sick of seeing Death Cab on there all the time. Now, its not my regular channel or anything of the sort but I can occasionally flip it on and 8 out of 10 times will see Asher or some other shitty artist being blown up on there, that is how it works. So comparing Say Anything to Asher? Fuck that shit.
But honestly, not to start a big argument or anything cause that's not the point... Asher and Say Anything should not be compared. Its MTV/VH1 and every other mainstream radio station that creates this madness, it cannot be controlled by us, normal listeners.
But but but we cannot forget that it is a business, and even Say Anything needs to make a living too... I will admit that may take part in what they write when it comes to what the music sounds like, but at least Max's lyrics have some sort of depth and passion in them, I mean seriously.

Well I was not talking about that single song in general, I was talking overall as an artist lyric wise... cause from what I have heard by Asher, a lot of his material... lyrically it just does not appeal to me. He is no Eminem at all, I personally hate the comparisons of him to Eminem but I am just mentioning him compared to my favorite rapper.
And you are right that its not fun to be judged upon one song... but for goodness sakes Asher Roth is only setting himself up to be judged upon one song, like that is all he seems to offer to everyone. And he clearly has to have more than one song to make an album, but the only song that 80% of people know is I Love College, Say Anything has Wow, Walk Through Hell, Woe, and Alive With The Glory, and that is just naming a few songs that most people would hear along with Wow.

The song did sample Say It Ain't so. He had to change it.

Also for anyone who was saying how he's all about trying to make money:
According to inside sources, the song which borrows from Weezer’s 1994 hit “Say It Ain’t So,” seemed to have struck a chord with Cuomo who refused to clear the sample even after Asher offered the rock star 100% of the record’s publishing. “Asher offered Rivers all of the publishing and he still wouldn’t clear the sample,” said a source from Asher’s camp, who spoke under the condition of anonymity.
Hmmmm... He was going to give away the records publishing.... Yea. K.

First off, honestly the first song by Say Anything that I heard was Woe, so I don't know where this Wow, I Can Get Sexual... stuff is coming from? Woe, was the big time song when I first found them... it is clearly unique in its sound... so that is what attracted me to the band. So that is that.
Now for Asher, well it would be different if I had only heard this song... and did not look further into his discography to find at least a diamond in the rough... but I could not find that... not even in the least bit honestly. I gave him his fair chance just like I gave Angels and Airwaves when they came out and I came to the decision they sucked too. It is not a big deal for someone to suck and yet make so much money and be so popular in the mainstream music scene, in fact it seems to be the more the "cookie cutter" you are the more money and fame you will receive, its like business school but only in a musical perspective.

Wow is, by far, Say Anything's most popular song. I'm just using it for the comparison. Also, Woe is not that unique (though impressive lyrically when compared to Bemis' peers). If you've actually checked out other parts of his discography and still don't like him, I'm not really directing my point towards you. It's more towards the people who hear I Love College and get pissed that it's so popular and decide Asher Roth suck without any further investigation.

Well, until I started reading what people said on Ap.net I had no idea that their most popular song was Wow, I figured it would be Woe (funny how they are one letter apart when we explain them), because Woe is just unique in my eyes because his vocal work in it is just weird, it really has that indie feel but has that sound that could easily make the radio. I liked it, and it sounded like not much I had heard before (note: this was... years and years ago that this was like that, I clearly have heard all of SA's stuff now, and they are just good). But I could see how Wow is as popular as it is... its got that immature sound that people seem to be attracted to, I don't understand it, its a good song, not their best, but good none the less.
Now, I probably would not even had given Asher a chance and looked way into his discography if the people I work with were not all pissed that I Love College sucked and his other stuff was amazing... come to find out I listened to enough of his stuff (more then 10 songs that were given to me by them, and stuff I also looked up myself for just personal curiousity), to know he was nothing that amazing... not even close to the word amazing, more like... just another rapper in the sea of mediocrity. But still making money from stupid gimmicks and lame commercialized help in music promotion, he is just a flavor of the week to me... and nothing more.
So trust me sir, I have done my research on him and he does not impress me in the slightest, if they are good they are good, and if they are bad they are bad, if they fall in the middle, hell... they fall in the middle. I will be the first to admit all of these things... but he does not fall but below the middle, not the bottom of all rappers... but not even close to the upper middle class.

The reason why we are still even having this argument is because of your ridiculous straw man logic concerning rap, not to mention that for whatever reason you still think someone needs to go to "college parties" to "relate" (i.e. enjoy) to his music. So thank you for proving again and again that Roth's music isn't actually good by normal criteria, as proven by the fact that you have to invent your own in order to make him appear interesting.
Nowhere in this thread have you argued that Roth is good based on his lyrics (except to say that it is "better" than a bunch of ill-defined examples of mainstream rap) or his beats (except to say that he had a sample, but had to get rid of it). So, basically, unless I'm a college-educated white male aged 18-21 with little regard for mainstream rap, I'll never like him. The end.
