This is an old notion, but bear with me.

A while ago after Nas' Hip Hop Is Dead album came out, Blender ran an article listing the forces that killed Hip-Hop. Of these, which do you think had the biggest hand in killing it (if you think it was/is dead. i think it still is, but funny article: http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?id=2321).

- The Young (Joc, Jeezy, etc.) and Lil (Kim, Wayne, etc.) moniker
- Double albums (All Eyez on Me, Wu-Tang Forever, etc.)
- Athletes who think they can rap (Shaq, Ron Artest, etc.)
- The lazy remix (My President Remix, Welcome to Atlanta Remix, etc.)
- The public schooling system for poor education of our youngsters
- Cross-marketing (Roc-A-Wear, Puff Daddy Cologne, etc.)
- Nas
- White people! (Eminem, Vanilla Ice, etc.)
- The N-word
- The mix tape
- Hip-Hop ain't dead

What a great poll. I was honestly wondering the same thing yesterday. I ended up choosing the first one and I also think our stupid society helped by buying into this crap.

Edit: There is good underground rap but mainstream is just balls.

I dont think any of those things you listed killed hip hop
i think what killed it was society and trends
in the 90s rap was good and like rappers had talent
but then that southern like snap and roll or whatever started comin in (the akons, t- pains, lil jon) which changed hip hop from like fuckin good rap to songs with barely any rapping with terrible lyrics about being in the club gettin shawtys with like a dancy club beat
and the reason why it keeps getting worse is because the songs r making money as there commercial

i dont think good rap/hip hop is dead as there is still some good shit out there (pretty much all underground), but in the main stream i think it is

If the premise of most mainstream hip-hop songs became the new world order, you'd be able to buy/steal women from vending machines and get a degree in f-ing the world up cause you feel like it today, and about half of us would be shot within the week.

Commercialization to the point where the real artists who made real art were cut off and only those who were 'just right' for the mainstream could succeed.

When i think of hip hop it isnt JUST music, its also the break dancing and graffiti...i dont ever hear any dj scratchin anymore, well at least scratchin that sounds good, not just amature scratchin.

Callin Soulja Boy hip hop is like callin Fallout boy hardcore. its just so wrong.

i have more to say but i dont think im sayin anything coherent. maybe ill get back to this later.

honestly, I don't think hip-hop is dead. I think it's on life-support, and Souljaboy is in the process of pulling the plug.

- The Young (Joc, Jeezy, etc.) and Lil (Kim, Wayne, etc.) moniker: Didn't kill it, but they're killing it.
- Double albums (All Eyez on Me, Wu-Tang Forever, etc.): Double albums rule.
- Athletes who think they can rap (Shaq, Ron Artest, etc.): There's just as many atrocities in rock.
- The lazy remix (My President Remix, Welcome to Atlanta Remix, etc.): Wasn't thaat bad.
- The public schooling system for poor education of our youngsters: lol
- Cross-marketing (Roc-A-Wear, Puff Daddy Cologne, etc.): Nothing wrong with that.
- Nas: WTF this dude is Saving it!
- White people! (Eminem, Vanilla Ice, etc.): If you ever compare Eminem with Vanilla Ice ever again, I'll kick you in the balls.
- The N-word: That's just ruining society, not rap.
- The mix tape: Mix tapes rule.
- Hip-Hop ain't dead: THIS IS THE ANSWER!!!!!

I don't find hip hop to be completely dead, I think whats killing is are these rappers using auto-tune shit. It sounds absolutely horrible. I can't even listen to it..I'll stick with the sick underground and old school hip hop myself.

new rap is terrible, 90's rap was far superior. Dre, 2pac, biggie, nwa, snoop, bone thugs. Oh and i think akon should be banned, he owns a diamond mine in africa, possibly blood diamonds. That is a huge insult to his own people

White People. But then again, what musical movement haven't white people ruined?

Anyways, DOOM's new album will save it. I'm looking forward to another DOOM/Ghostface tag team, a la "The Mask" on The Mouse and The Mask.
