My friend hated him because he though he was a Beatles rip off...I loved him because he made music that reminded me of why I love the music (i.e. the Beatles)...my friend loves him now...in conclusion my friend, I love him and all but lets face it, can suck a dick.
RIP - The world wasn't ready for someone as beautiful as you.

With all due respect to Sufjan Stevens, Conor Oberst, and whoever else people like to through the title on to, I fully believe that the man was the greatest singer/songwriter of this generation.
Too soon.
At least he received a fair amount of appreciation after his work for Good Will Hunting. I'm still torn between whether "Say Yes" or "King's Crossing" is my favourite song.. Anyone want to break the tie?

reminds me of that part on the royal tenenbaums whenever richie shaves his beard partly off and cuts his hair, followed by the very moving slit wrist scene... gives me chills everytime, a lot due to the fact "needle in the hay" is playing in the background the entire time... very powerful. sad all around.

King's Crossing i'd say..
R.I.P. so talented, yet so depressed...life really is a bitch sometimes

Completely. And any singer/songwriter who would take offense to this is insane. He's Elliott Smith, for god's sake.

For some reason I thought this was yesterday, but nevertheless, R.I.P. One of the best artists of our time.
edit: this was yesterday and I can't read.

i listen to him everyday. there is no and never will be a greater musician than him.
admittedly this is a site where everyone's favorite band is touted as "the best" but i do not for a moment feel guilty calling elliott smith the best songwriter of our generation. the man could write the most heartbreaking song you'd ever heard while being undeniably catchy at the same time. he also holds the distinction of being the only modern musician i know of who even begins to approach the kind of musical range the beatles had. i'm sorry to say that i did not start listening to elliott until after his death, but over the past two years he's become one of my favorite artists ever and i can't keep from kicking myself for not discovering him earlier
favorite album: xo
favorite songs: angeles, between the bars, a fond farewell
thankyou for this.
this man was amazing and all of the songwriters today should just aspire to be a little like him.
rip dear mr. smith.

Elliott is the only musician to change who I am as a person. I don't know what else to say. I miss the guy. The next posthumous release is going to blow everyone away. He has a ton of great songs unreleased.

he did take his own life right? cuz if so i dont think its fair to say that he "passed away." none the less, he wasnt meant for this world.

Elliott Smith did not take his own life, his own life took Elliot Smith. And yes there is a difference, and yes that covers the claims he was stabbed by someone else, and either way it doesnt fucking matter how he died. He is the greatest of this generation and possibly quite a few others, and I truly wish we could have experienced a little more of that greatness. I would have loved to have heard "Basement" the way Elliot intended it.

Is there anything available on the web that has a video of him performing Miss Misery on the Oscars? I've wanted to so long see that performance.

I had just started to get into his music maybe a month or two before he died.. crazy how that happens. His music will never and never should be forgotten.

heatmeiser is the shit, but elliott's solo work is the shit x1000000000. I'd never even heard of him until one night one of my friends played 2:45 am with his acoustic and ever since Elliott has been one of my favorites. I'd have to say "Twilight" is definitely my favorite Smith song.
