It also probably cost more to make and was playing in more theaters, Slumdog only cost about $15 million to make

The gap between critical and financial successes is the widest its ever been. That's nothing new. In the late 60's, early 70's, movies like Bonnie and Clyde, The Godfather, Taxi Driver, etc. were all hugely successful, as well as critically acclaimed. Most people today just want to be entertained. They don't want to learn, think, whatever.

Paul Blart ads were everywhere weeks before it came out where the general public wouldn't have heard a peep about Slumdog until award season.

yeah that's super sad, irrelevant of what time each movie has been out or whatever.

I like Kevin James, but this makes me sad. Slumdog is such a great movie that everyone should see, and Paul Blart looked like a mediocre at best comedy.

I'm sure Slumdog's awful ad campaign hasn't helped much...

Movies aren't always for artistic and meaningful stories.

Most the times they're escapes for people. I don't always wanna go see something that makes you think. Mindless comedy is fun sometimes too.

Might be completely pointless and stupid, but that's the point.

okay so what im hearing is that...

sometimes its okay if a movie sucks, people like that from time to time? Haha people are willing to blow $11 to see a movie that isnt funny, isnt good, isnt unique, and is just hollywood dribble....

MORE SO than the best movie of the year? Its not like slumdog didnt make a lot of money in the long run...but you know the producers of MAll Cop are laughing all the way to the bank. January stupid comedy makes 150milliion haha....amazing.

Paul Blart was played in many more movie theaters and was rated PG (compared to Slumdog being rated R) so it was much more accessible to a wider range of people, it's not that big of a surprise Paul Blart made more money...

SaintSammy17

I saw both *shrug*

The only reason Paul Blart made more money is because of a wider release and lower rating.

After seeing Slumbdog Millionaire I wish my money had gone to Paul Blart.

It's a PG-rated kids movie ... what the Hell do you expect?yep, while slumdog is R

Movies that make the most money are usually not even close to the best of the year. The same goes for music. Just look at the year's top selling albums

I didn't see Paul Blart. Was it even funny?

No. It was one of those comedies where every other joke was aimed at littler kids.

fly_guy
03/09/09, 11:43 AM
Because it's a kid's movie ...

I repeat - PG RATED.

I know, but that's why I didn't like it. I enjoy kids movies that have something for adults.

Take Shrek for an example. I liked Shrek 1 & 2 because half of the jokes were aimed at adults.

And it's a bit unfair to compare Paul Blart and Slumdog, money wise. The whole family is going to go to Paul Blart because it's a family comedy. Slumdog is not.

Paul Blart was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I highly recommend you all stay away from it

edit: unless you take into account their worldwide totals, then slumdog is killing it.

You need to take some business classes. Slumdog appeals to a much smaller audience than Blart. While Slumdog mainly caters towards those who are looking for a more rich cinematic experience (i.e. hipsters, film aficionados, those with a cursory interest in film), it doesn't really crossover well into other audiences besides through word of mouth and because it won Best Picture. Mostly because it's ad campaigns are truly terrible.

Meanwhile, Paul Blart specifically targets the three most consistent audiences bases: kids, families, and comedy fans. Not to mention the biggest star in Slumdog is the kid from Skins (a show that isn't even popular in America), while Blart's biggest star is one of the most recognizable and popular comic actors in America, you should be able to surmise exactly why this is as it is.

Also, for those that are saying the divide between commercial and critical success has never been greater, you are correct. However, to be fair to the general public, those films that are praised heavily today are far less accessible than those of yesteryear. Compare There Will Be Blood with something like the Godfather. Both are extremely well done films, but one caters towards both the general public and cinemaphiles, while the other really just goes after the latter.

I'd say, with the rise of the auteur and with more and more elite producers/directors targeting more personal stories and less widely interesting subject matters, I can hardly blame audiences for their shift. There is the rare example, such as the Departed which has major stars, a widely interesting subject, and critical acclaim, but they are more the exception than the rule these days.

In short, production companies and those that create the movies are getting smarter. The problem is, for that to happen they both have to go in different directions, and that's where the disconnect comes from.
