Fan Reports In: "Last night at the Glasshouse show, Daphne Loves Derby (www.daphnelovesderby.com) said they are going to do an all acoustic show at Chain Reaction on January 20th and that they will play some old songs. On another note: Bright Eyes were the special guests of the night and I thought it was funny when Conor stopped during the first song and asked the crowd not to sing along. hmmph."

the crowd maybe throws his time off, just a guess
Maybe because people go to hear Conor sing his songs, not the person next to them.

it's just distracting for him, i don't get why some people try to make such a big deal out of it. from what people said in the other thread about this show, he wasn't even being an ass and said he appreciated it. (not to sound bitchy!)

singing along is fun. i've only been to one show where i couldnt hear the band. i've been to hundred of shows. conor is amazing, yet is a ***got.

Fucking bitch.
I don't know if anybody else saw the Mars Black rant on livejournal but it was saying how Conor knows 95% of his fans are the kind of people who are latching on because it's cool and those are the people he hates more than anybody.
He obviously is a person who takes his music very seriously. Maybe his songs are very personal to him and the last thing he wants are a bunch of 15 year olds who don't know what he's singing about trying to turn it into a sing-a-long. It's just a guess, but I personally don't enjoy going to shows where I can't hear the band and if were in his situation would probably do the same thing. Plus, it's funny.

i heard that at one show he followed that statement up with "it makes me feel like dashboard confessionals"

haha i when i went to see him during the Im Wide Awake, Its Morning, he just turned sideways during "One Foot In Front Of the Other or (landlocked Blues)" so the crowd wouldnt sing along......i think its funny. I mean you can lip the words if you want but i have had some of the worst singers ever behind me and it is fucking annoying. think about it? Are you going to the show just so you can sing along and try to get compliments from the people around you (WOW! YOURE A REALLY GOOD SINGER, YOU SHOULD BE UP THERE WITH CONOR) or are you going to see the band play and let them sing their songs......i mean there are some bands that are obvious sing along bands but I dont think Bright Eyes is one of those bands and conor makes it obvious if it isnt already.

Isn't that how Lil Bow Wow got his start. Maybe we all just wanna be like Bow Wow and Conor could be our Snoop Dogg? "Bow wow wow yippee oh yippe yay the calender hung itself....." Doesn't have the same ring to it.

the way i think of it is that it isnt like the music is as loud and upbeat as it is at other shows...some shows you go to and sing and cant even hear yourself sing but a show like that it's probably hard to hear as it is. the genre of music isnt really fan-sing friendly. plus, its one thing to sing a chorus, but alot of times the best part of a live show is when the singer plays around with the timing or the words or something, and you cant do that if the crowd is singing every word to every song. plus, i know from experience that you dont hear yourself AT ALL when you're singing into a mic depending on how the speakers are set up, so its not easy to keep up with the band. from what i hear he wasnt a jerk about it, he just asked the fans. however, i know he does have a track record of being a douchebag, from what i hear from other people, so who knows what it was all about.

yea, at the atlanta show this past summer all these kids were singing along, and he stopped them with something along the lines of "Please don't sing along, I'm not Dashboard fucking Confessional". of course he was quite inebriated at the time

Well it is his show, let him do whatever he wants. He probably wants to create the best musical experience for the audience as he can and nasaly 14 year old voices coming from all directions just doesn't do that for me anyway...

yeah, whoever submitted this should have told the whole story, i was there too. he apologized and thanked everyone for singing along, but said that it 'fucks him up' when he's playing and makes it too hard. it's as simple as that. some people have trouble with nervousness and playing and singing at the same time.

i believe he only does it when its just him and a guitar. in fact, at the glasshouse show, he said "it fucks me up when other people sing" which i think is very understandable.
p.s. daphne loves derby was really boring. just in my opinion though. i can't really see what's up with all the hype around them.

i never saw bright eyes, before, and only heard a few songs. When he said that I laughed pretty hard. It sounded MUCH better without a bunch of people singing along, I was impressed with their set though. It was almost two hours long and i never lost interest once.
I can now admit that although there are 100,000 high school girls, just starting to get their rag, who think they're special because they listen to something as deep and emotional as bright eyes, he writes fucking genius songs and I now like bright eyes.

except it's not like that at all.
I didn't know what he was talking about either.
Also, I hated when I went and saw Saves the Day and a bunch of people decided that they wanted to sing along, and started drowning out Chris Connelly. I went for Saves the damn Day, not for Joe Nobody. If you want to mouth the words, dance, tap your feet, or whatever, that's all fine, but keep the singalongs to a minimum. Its cool for gang vocals and stuff like that, but for the most part, it just grinds my gears.
except it's not like that at all.

yeah Conor keeps it real, Yes millions of people have dashboard sing-a-longs, but most of the time i just like to hear the artist sing and not the 5000 14 year old girls in my ear. And Bright eyes shows should allways be like that, when i saw him perform last year you could hear a pin drop.

If you've ever really taken the time to read things about Conor...like interviews and such, you will know that Conor does not want to be any kind of pop icon. And of course, singing along at shows is simply a form of that.
As a musician and true fan of music - I can understand where he is coming from to a degree.
He has also been quoted before as not "wanting to be dashboard confessional" and sing-alongs make it seem that way.
But things like that that everyone is NOW taking notice in, Conor's been doing for years. It's just a part of him and the way he is.
ALSO, Conor is not the only musician to do this. Ani Difranco (sp?) has been quoted before I believe, about not wanting people to sing along to her songs at shows either.

Eh I have mixed opinions. If he doesn't want huge singalongs then that's fine, he is the artist after all. But for the random fans in this thread saying people don't go to shows to sing along, the truth is that they do. Just because you want to suck conor oberst's dick on a message board he will never see is a pretty stupid reason to be high and mighty about people singing along. If the person next to you sounds shitty, move. I've never been to a seated show where there was a problem with people singing, and at a general admission one there's always the ability to move. Yeah, I've been next to people who sing loud and bad. But I'm not a big enough douchebag to ruin the show for them.

chris used to do that alot at dashboard shows
Um...
The whole reason he uses the name DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL and not Chris Carrabba is because he wanted the crowd to be part of the performance and not to feel isolated like they can't sing along.
If you could tell me when, where, and what song I'd appreciate it.
Cause as of right now I think you're wrong.

i always went to shows to see a band put on a preformance. some songs you can sing along to. others you just dance or watch the band. most people go to shows to see a band, if kids want to sing along to a band, why not stay home and sing along with the cd?
