View Full Version : Hahahaha... Who The Hell Moshes At A Mae Show?

Fan Reports In: "Not really news, but tonight at Mae (www.whatismae.com)'s Denver show they proved yet again why they're one of the most reputable bands in the scene. The mosh pit had one of "those" kids in it (you know, the kid too tough to enjoy the show but feel it's his/her responsibility to ruin it for everybody else) and Mae refused to play another song until he was escorted out by security. My respect for them raised immeasurably. Amazing show overall."

I've seen them live 4 times and though they are definitely not a show to mosh at, they are really energetic and entertaining live. I saw them live opening for someone before I bought their CD and was really surprised at how mellow the CD was.
I enjoy their music, but their live show was rather boring. Props to them for drawing attention to that kid though.

I have now seen them five times and that was what I though before I saw them, but after seeing them they quickly became one of my favorite live bands ever. They are one of the best sounding live bands ever. The only member that doesnt really have that much energy is the bass player, but besides that all the other members really get into it. Mae puts on a great live show nuff said

Mae is amazing...moshing always stumped me. I just dont get it. Fun to watch because its more the other dudes sport you know, kinda like hardcore dancing. Its fun to watch just not my thing. I went to a hardcore show a few months back at Chain Reaction and they did the whole "seperate the middle thing and braveheart run at eachother and river dance sping kick backflip move thru the crowd". It was cool to watch, and I can imagine how long one would have to practice in front of the bathroom mirror before being allowed to perform in public, cus some of those kids obviously didnt have mirrors at home.

10/23/05, 07:21 PM
I hate when that happens. I'm one of those people who feel like you can enjoy a show without getting punched in the face or kicked in the groin. This is especially true at a show like Mae...kids like that are unnecessary. Mae just earned like 980,644 scene points for what they did.

maybe im just an asshole, but i do not mosh and i too am generally annoyed by the metalheads who mosh at shows where moshing is kind of odd (muse, the mars volta), but if mae didnt at least ask the guy to stop and just straight kicked him out, thats lame as fuck.
i enjoy a show where i am not annoyed by one person, but that is just a part of the concert going expirence. if you dont want certain people at shows you attend to do things you personally cannot stand (which reminds me, if everybody hates moshing so much, why is it done? some people arent practicing what they preach or nobody would mosh anymore) then go listen to the cd in your room or car. assholes are part of the concert expirence. where would we be without fat pale chicks and metalheads that just want to fuck shit up?
but if they didnt warn him, and threw him out of the show (which he paid for) that is bullshit and counts as another strike against a band thats already behind in the count.

I always find myself agreeing almost perfectly with your posts. I think that makes you pretty much my favorite. Do you post on the Limbeck board? I think I recognize your name from there.
Even though they're real good I do have a hard time watching Mae. I was at three dates of their tour with TAI and I only stayed for their whole set once because I was working that show.

Moshing is so gay
My friend saw Alkaline Trio live a few years ago and supposedly two girls started fighting during one of the songs. Matt Skiba stopped the band jumped off the stage and broke up the fight. He then hopped back onstage and said to the crowd "If there's another fight we're packing our shit and leaving."

"Warning" a kid at rock show is about as useless as a penis on your elbow.
Examples:
"Excuse me sir, can you please stop breaking girls' noses? Thanks".
"Hey kid, stop choking kids in the crowd"
...
If you hadn't noticed, some (and most) instances of kids being ass holes at shows, require immediate action and not elementary styled "warnings". Also, kids intentionally kicking, punching and elbowing people in the face will need a MUCH better justification then, "Well, it's just part of a show" (especially if we're talking about a Mae show).

yeah, it's amazing how many people "mosh" to bands that don't fit the bill for moshing. my favorite of all time was this guy with a red mohawk who thought he was hardass while watching october fall. skanking around with combat boots to "i'll find you again". he would have skanked everyone to death if those damn 12 year old fat girls hadn't gotten in the way. BAD ASS. btw, this is nothing against OF, they are a good band.

Yea, you kinda wish for that part you can just yell out, but there really isint one on mae, but i DEFINITLY wouldent say they put on a boring preformance. If you need people going crazy on stage to get you off then you just have a.d.d. Mae puts on a spectacular show, probably the best i have ever seen, and there is energy just not a screamy jump around kind of energy.

first off, a penis on your elbow is not only functional, but also a lot cooler and accessable. and, girls will want to touch it. that is obvious.
secondly, i dont know if youre in a band, or ever were (most likely not a band where violence may occur), but when that shit goes down you tell them to calm the fuck down or they are leaving, i wasnt there, but i think at a mae show if someone got their nose broken or was getting choked, there would be like some emo militia field trial right there and then. youre making an extreme example to justify your position and invalidate mine, which is a poor poor way to try to "win" a "debate", espically on a message board. espically with me just asking a question and you flipping the old bitch switch where you try to negate everything i said because you work for AP and im just some trendy ass kid.
thridly, kids at a mae show are a lot different than a kid at a napalm death show. that being said, i dont think the "moshing" that was happening was direct blows to the back of peoples heads. someone probably got drunk beforehand and rocked out a bit too hard and maybe knocked someone over.
and, by the way, when you enter a mosh pit you reserve the right to get your shit fucked, wether or not it is justified or logical, its just something you gotta be prepared for. lame? yeah, it is, but at the same time , you know it beforehand and if it happens its nobodys fault but yours. dont want violence? then dont go to throwdown shows, ya know?
immediate action is by the band everyone came to see calling you out on stage. i'd say thats pretty fucking embarassing, getting called out by the headlining act. i dont know if you respect the bands you see, but in chicago, the bands deserve respect.so if they tell you thats youre fucking everything up, then you stop or the crowd will take care of you.
blah blah blah i know youre gonna flip about something small and unimportant when you read this but im not going to take it seriously. so good luck.

See, I was in a band for 3 years of my life, a hard one nonetheless, and that's the issue with your post.
Mae are NOT a hard band. They're a soft band, and when there's an idiot PURPOSELY trying to hurt kids and make the experience less enjoyable for others, it's VERY different than a whole entire room who are collectively swinging, dancing and going crazy. The user show submitted this post made a point to clarfy that this kid was one of, "those", kids, which, by my interpretation, describes a kid with the intentions of screwing up a set for a band and an experience for fans. Anyone who has been to a fair amount of shows knows exactly what someone means when they describe "those" kids.
If someone is sticking out like a sore thumb (obviously this kid was, because if he wasn't, the band wouldn't have noticed him) and making it blatantly obvious that they are at the show to ruin the experience for others, KICK HIS ASS OUT. Obviously this kid knows he's doing something wrong, and knows he's doing it to piss other people off, it's not like he needs a "warning" to realize, "Oh shit, I'm being a dick right now".
If this kid was "moshing" in a civil and non-violent manner, he wouldn't have stuck out like a penis on an elbow (had to incorporate that again). I HIGHLY doubt Mae would've reacted in the manner they did, had this kid done what he was doing peacefully. If there was a group of kids dancing and getting into the music, I doubt Mae would've randomly picked this kid out and said, "security, get rid of him". Apparently, he was an extreme case and stood out among the masses.
Also, you claim about an "emo militia" if a kid got his nose broken? My friend Jimmy got punched in the face during an Acceptance set and had to get stitches to sew his left nostril back on (he was also standing around the perimeter of the mosh pit)... where was the "emo militia" then? That kid was also thrown out without warning by security... I'm guessing you think that was unfair as well?... Give me a break.
I've been to dozens of shows where ONE ass hole walks around jumping into girls and swinging his elbows into the faces of others who are along the rim of the mosh pit, trying to enjoy a band like Days Away or Copeland... it's inexcusable and unjustifiable.
Also, 15 year olds at shows don't "take care" of ass holes like you claim... at least not where I live, and especially when the audience is 70% girls (like at Mae shows).
P.S.- Just because I "work" for AP I can't have an opinion? And you call this "flipping out"? Using the "you're an Ap worker" argument is fucking lame, because my posts have been 100% civil and have not been bitchy in anyway. Also, I didn't realize you were a "trendy" kid, thanks for the insight.

I agree with everything you said. Moshing is fine when it's a show where you're expecting to mosh, in which case if you don't want to be part of it, you can simply plan to be off to the side or in the back. But at a Mae show, I'd feel damned safe standing in the big fat middle because who the hell would start a mosh pit listening to Mae but someone on some serious drugs?
I commend Mae for making an example out of this guy. I was at a Rufio show and they did the same thing with a big guy who was clearly on something and was basically just hitting everyone in his path to rock vengeance. They made a comment about him onstage then security came and (with quite a bit of difficulty) pulled him away from the stage. It's always nice to see when the band cares.
On a side note, My Chemical Romance did this at a Dallas Warped Tour, which was kind of neat except they essentially wasted 10 minutes making sure not a single person was uncomfortable. At least they were the "Energizer" band, so they actually had an extra 15 minutes, but it was still rather annoying of them to go so over-the-top and kill that much time. As long as no one's getting trampled or seriously injured, they're ok.
Anyone who says "I did a spinkick at ____ show" needs to have their legs chopped off.

Yeah, I had the same reaction when I read it. :-)

they're new to the concert scene. i think they're just ruining the history and
style of moshing. I've see Mae like 5 years ago, dude.. NO one MOSHES to Mae.

this band and their fans are a bunch of pussies 'oh wah dont mosh ehhh we dont do that. just hold your girlfriend and cry. were so caught in suspension baby. i need you like the ocean needs the waves even though the ocean doesnt need them they are produced by tides and gravity, but i'm just an emo guy that loves read along disney stories where u turn the page at the tone even though i'm 28'
personally, i think it's a matter of "getting it" vs. "not getting it" with certain bands. some that come to mind are mae, days away, and lovedrug. if you can't get into it, the best thing you can do is NOT go out of your way to ruin the experience for people who do get it. example, death cab bore the hell out of me, so i'm not going to go to a death cab show and then rant about how lame it was.
anyway, mae is a stunning live band and some of most genuine, most deserving people in the industry. i definitely feel lucky to have been able to see them grow as a band over the past three years.

As much as I do think moshing to Mae is stupid. And I don't like those kind of people, it's a rock show. And with success, comes more and more of those people.
And if you can't handle it, then you're not ready to be succesful.
So it kinda makes me lose respect that they would take the time to kick someone out of their show just because of that.
As a performer, you have to teach yourself to handle anything that comes your way.
It'd be the same thing if someone was heckling them from the audience.
But also, chances are the idiot was drunk anyways.

i'm sure the fucker was doing more than just moshing to get kicked out. but did anyone give him a warning? if not that is kinda fucked up. haha.
w/e. i really don't give a shit. mae is awesome live...but only if you have a girly friend to take to the show.
mae = instant poon
If you're at a Mae show, and you're stopping other people from enjoying it, then you're a fucking asshole. Straight up.
I've seen bands of all genres, and I've seen some pretty stupid kids out there. Running full speed while punching/kicking into a group of people during "This Song Is Brought To You By A Falling Bomb" is a pretty good way to show how fucking worthless you are.

.....i saw mae headline with circa survive in dc. i ended up leaving in the middle of their set. they are perhaps the most boring act ive seen since dashboard like 5 years ago. no wonder a kid tried to mosh...he probably wanted to get someone to knock his ass out to make things more interesting

hahaha i liked this one the best. the single coolest aspect of mae is that their number one fan has a picture of trey parker as his AP icon. that's all they really have going for them.

fear before, a worthy alt. hardcore act. i saw them a little over a year ago and these kids in the pit were jumping on top of the crowd and throwing punches. David(lead singer) asked them to keep it in the pit and that everyoen is just tryign to enjoy the show. thats how is should be. My dad really likes david because after they played daivd and him started "chatting". my dad and david= bros for life
i think spin kicks have been brought to the wrong places. and i pursonelly can be held resposnilbe for that. seeing the bled at 2 years ago warped tour made me bring out all my dance moves. and honestly its stupid. spinkicks and hardcore dancing is ment for your shitty local hardcore acts and small venues, but its been publicized and losers now bring it to all the shows. ive seen fights between the dancers and moshers at blood brother shows so it sucks but it will alwasy be there.
i commend mae. but honestly i defitenly think that mae is a mosh band.
haha
