Tower of Rome – All is Lost…All is Lost…All is Yet to be Found

Who?
One of Chicago’s fiercest, most to-the-point grindcore bands, raaaaaaaar, blah blah blah.
How is it?
This is one of the most boring CD’s I have ever heard. As with all trends, grindcore has begun to house a talentless bunch of trendcatchers, and this is one of the worst examples of formulaic crap in the genre. Each song begins with one or, at most, two chords switching back and forth, and then the pseudo-breakdown comes in, and then there's more things you can’t hear because the drums are way too huge (or there might be just drums, I don't actually care), and that's all blanketed by some pretty awful vocals. Each track opens exactly the same, except “This is a Film about a Ghost” which goes for a hilarious attempt at a Dead To Fall / Darkest Hour type guitar-wank riff. Totally overrated by the Chicago scene, Tower of Rome did their best work in picking out their band title, and then pretty much gave up on art. Bad sound quality is no excuse for why this is a terrible album. A better excuse is that absolutely nothing happens. It sounds like if Spazz decided to care less about their music. It sounds like if Anal Cunt had a fanbase. Whatever you make of it, these songs obviously took as long to write as they did to listen to.
Although I will be honest: if album artwork were a factor in the rating, then the score would be higher, because this is one awesome album cover. But after you're done looking at it, that's pretty much all the artistic expression you're getting out of this album.
