I'm currently working on a paper for a communications class about the differences in how men and women are portrayed in the music industry. Does anyone know of any key conflicts, articles, or other assorted points of interest that I should check out? I'm currently searching the academic databases and Google, but thought asking here might bring up some additional sources for perusal.

You could (and probably should) talk about how most forms of "rock" music are still basically a boys' club. When a girl is in a bigger commercial band, she's usually dolled up and turned into an object. This has resulted in "girl rock" seeming like a novelty to the masses. Also, take note that the female in question is usually the "frontman." It's rare to see a girl bassist, drummer, or guitar player in the more popular bands today. They're out there as soon as you dig a little bit deeper than Paramore, Flyleaf, etc, but it's still something to take note of.

You could also delve into mainstream hip-hop. I don't really feel that I need to elaborate on that too much. Watch any rap video block on any mainstream music channel and you'll have a goddamn gold mine.

you could also talk about how feminist music like riot grrl becomes characterized as feminazi bullshit while completely misogynist stuff like nickleback and radio alternative are just "having fun"

my thesis is on on this, if i ever feel like graduating.
