Audrye Sessions - Audrye Sessions EP
Record Label: Black Seal
Release Date: October 14, 2008
It's not often that I come across a band I've never heard before and find myself picking out shades of Radiohead, Muse, and Coldplay. The first time I spun Audrye Sessions EP, I was making myself a western omelette (ham, onions, green bell peppers, you know), and I was about ready to stick my face in the frying pan during the first track "Turn Me Off". As an avid explorer of new music, how has this band managed to fly under my radar? Musically, "Turn Me Off" is very similar to Coldplay (before the Sgt. Pepper costumes and violins), but Ryan Karazija's vocals bring the whole song to a whole new level. Imagine Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Muse's Matthew Bellamy blended up into a cold indie smoothie and you'll have his sound. Karazija sings of "being so [upset] that you want to shut off", and he even manages to put a depressing spin on "New Year's Day". "We'll do it all over again" he softly moans,"'cause it's just another year / That slipped away from me". But with inspirations that include disabled war veterans returning from battle, one shouldn't expect verses about bubblegum rainbows and chocolate rivers.
That being said, there is still a "feel-good" vibe that I get while writing about this band. Maybe it's the comparisons to Coldplay, or just all of the references to food, but there's something about Audrye Sessions that makes them a great candidate for a summer car ride. All of these songs, plus eight more, make up the band's self-titled full length that was released in February. That's good news for me, because the Audrye Sessions EP is full of ingredients that have my ears buzzing for another bite.
old Coldplay; Thom Yorke; Matthew Bellamy; omelettes
