View Full Version : Jared Reports In: Death Cab For Cutie

Last night I finally saw one of my all-time favorite bands, Death Cab For Cutie (http://www.deathcabforcutie.com), live. The show took place at the very popular 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on a miserable, cold and rainy night, but the evening was nothing short of amazing. Stars (http://www.arts-crafts.ca/stars/), a band from Montreal, Canada whose latest album, Set Yourself on Fire, I have been loving prior to this show opened up. Their set was nothing short of brilliant. They played all of their songs perfectly with an enthusiasm you expect to see musicians display for their own art. You could tell they were really into it and giving their all, which definitely perked the interest of the sold out crowd. If you're planning to see this tour, then make sure you get there early enough to see this band. I'm more than sure you won't be disappointed. If you haven't heard their new album yet, then you should also get on that. Now, for the main event, Death Cab For Cutie. Ben Gibbard is one of my favorite lyricists and voices in music. I always wondered how he'd sound in a venue and live setting and, let me tell you, he doesn't disappoint. The honesty, emotion, heart pouring, etc. that you hear on disc is captured just as well through the speakers. The whole band, for that matter, was dead on and from start to finish played a perfect set. You're not going to see this band back flip or spin kick, but they give every ounce of emotion inside them to provide the best performance they can. I can say I truly left the venue satisifed; however, I do have one complaint. They didn't play "Tiny Vessels." Aside from that, the setlist was perfect and I was like a kid in the candy store the entire time. Like I said, if you're a fan of the band or this tour is coming to your area, then make sure you check it out.

I wasn't sure.. I know some infamous venues (in Texas) that cancel shows like it's their job and just refuse to let anyone know until doors.

Thanks bro. I was stuck on "A Movie..." and the last two in the encore; however, they didn't play "Lightness" (at all). They played "We Laugh Indoors" where you have it listed, though.

They are always high quality. Its amazing how different the set list was when I saw them last, of course that was last year well before Plans and they were simply delicious then, even if it was a smaller show because they played at my school. However, I'm trying to pick up some tickets for the back to back sold out dates in Seattle at the Paramount. They totally rock socks live, love them. Hopefully some day I actually catch Postal Service too, I missed them when they played at Sasquatch two years ago.

Love DCFC for a while and saw them at Hammerstein in nyc the other day. They played great no question, but i felt like it would've been 500 times better to see them somewherte smaller...hammerstein is way too big and sucks out the energy, in my opinion...

I saw Death Cab at Coney Island and they were incredible. I got chills when they played. No doubt that Ben Gibbard's voice does something to me (in a totally non-man crush way...in a "god I wish I could sing like that" way).

Just a quick question, how was Youth Group? I love their album and I wanted to know if they were as good live as they are on cd.

If you like Youth Group's album then you'd like the live show...however, if you're not a fan of the record the live show would put you to sleep.

Someone asked about Transatlanticism: when they played in nyc, they played it as the final song of the encore and it was UNDOUBTEDLY the highlight of the show for me...sooooooo amazing.

i can't believe they played "we laugh indoors" damnit. The night before, in Providence, they did not. I was very sad. But wow, what an incredible set. Such a good time.

Which one did you go to, 19th or 20th? I was at the 20th, and they totally kicked ass. There were some differences in the setlists: "expo86" replaced "405", things like that, but mostly the same.

Hammerstein is a horrible venue though. Nasty people, and the setup just throughs a wall of sound at you. Yet somehow, death cab overcame to put on one hell of a show.

And I guess I'm the only person that thinks stars sucks. I tried so hard to like that album but I wanted to shoot myself every time i put it on.

I feel a little jipped now. I went in boston. 405 and Prove My Hypotheses would have made me sooooooo much happier than Tiny Vessels and Transatlanticism (mostly because they closed with them a year ago when I saw them too). You definitely got the best setlist I've seen from the tour so far.

it's my favorite death cab song, and the past two times i've seen them they haven't played it.

I only caught the last few songs of their summerfest set last summer and they really impressed. I've never been a big death cab fan, but they sounded great and put a lot of emotion into it. They were really talented and even just seeing them for 15 minutes really helped me to appreciate them.

Why would you go to boston over Providence? I cant think of a worse venue in Boston than the Orpheum...and lupo's is WONDERFUL (plus only 1200 cap.)

Spend the 45 mins it takes to get there and go to Lupo's in providence next time...
