the chariot sucks too. don't know what i was thinking when i originally made this post.

i can see why you'd say this. bless the martyr and kiss the child was rather simple musically, and while on the whole much better musically, o god the aftermath's production made everything sound almost the same.

I will disagree with you though.
Without Norma Jean i wouldn't be listening to half the stuff i listen to now (The Dillinger Escape Plan, From A Second Story Window, Everytime I Die, Isis, Pelican, Between the Buried and Me, Botch, Converge, and so on and so forth). I still go back and listen to bless the martyr quite frequently. I think Scogin is a great lyricist and parts/songs of that cd are still some of my favorites. Memphis will be laid to waste, "She simply will not die," "Like bringing a knife to a gun fight."

Very understandable why someone would dislike them though.

I like Norma Jean.

I can see why some don't, but Bless was a pretty innovative album I thought. O God is a good listen, but not as solid as Bless.

i do believe this post has breathed some new life into the trash talk forum. that's all i was really going for.

on the topic of norma jean, they're one of those bands that you can listen to over and over again and still not get what everyone lieks about them. i have nothing against the band; it's just that for whatever reason i just never could get into them.

I do so love the chariot.

my theory on way kids like them, they are accesible "heavy" music. they draw in all the new kids to heavy music. those kids think dischords=heavy, hence their love for norma jean (im not calling those of you who like them in here "new" to heavy music, just stating what ive seen from kids around me)

I saw Norma Jean once, with Unearth and Atreyu. And Scars of Tomorrow, unfortunately.

I'm not really that big of a fan of the hardcore/metal scene. I listen to some of it, and its not that I hate all of it, I just never really got into Norma Jean. Their live show was decent. The lights were really cool, and one of their guitarists was fun to watch, as he spun his guitar and flipped around and all that. I probably would have liked it more had i known more of their songs. And I'll admit, I liked the part of that song where he's like "Its like taking a knife to a gun fight"

If it means anything, two of my friends that I went with really liked them live...

I fucking love Norma Jean. O'God to me is a better album than Bless... it doesn't quite have the little abstract characteristics but the tonality, the songs, the vocals and structures of O'God are awesome. Maybe it is generic, I don't enjoy much metalcore (including Botch, I just never dug them) but to me Norma Jean delever something a bit different that's awesome to listen too.

I can't really think of a better name for the genre, though that isn't a good one I understand. I've seen people use "chaotic hardcore" a bit. That makes more sense.

Botch did it first and way better.

You're either not 27, lived under a rock, or a terrible fake account.

I'm well aware that Botch did it first and way better but more bands now are influenced by Norma Jean, mainly because they're more popular as is this type of music these days.

I am 27, don't live under a rock and I'm not a fake account.

If you rip off another band blatantly like Norma Jean did, then it's not Norma Jean's influence, it's Botch's.

While that's true, I'm sure lots of bands that imitate Norma Jean have never even heard of Botch.

Norma Jean and The Chariot are going on tour. Norma Jean is going to play Bless The Martyr in its entirety for a few select dates.

Get stoked.

In addition the spectacular bill, Norma Jean has a surprise in store for their longtime followers: in select cities, which will be announced at a later time, Brandan reveals that the band will perform their breakthrough album Bless The Martyr and Kiss the Child in its entirety (save for the album's 15 minute track). "We have always wanted to do something special for our fans and at some point we'd like to do even more atypical things like this."

Holy crap, I hope so much that they do that for the Pittsburgh show. I've seen then quite a few times and am not even that big of a fan, so I wasn't planning on going, but this changes everything.

Right? And they also say in the blog that The Chariot is going to be doing a few songs with them. I'm really hoping they choose the Chicago date as well, but I've never seen The Chariot so I'll go either way. Its the weekend before finals too :-p

Goddamn everyone overrates Botch.

They were not that good.

Minus the Bear IS good...but just because Minus the Bear is great doesn't mean Botch is in retrospect.

I've only seen the Chariot once, back before I really knew then and when they only had one album out. Huh, maybe I'll go regardless as well. We'll see. Oh, and that show is clearly more important than your grades, lol.

I absolutely love The Chariot, and I've never seen them. They're in my top bands to see easily.

Redeemer is their absolute best - BTM is grimy and excellent in parts, but also inconsistent. O' God is a thinly-veiled Pantera / Botch hybrid, extremely repetitive and badly produced (what was Matt Bayles thinking?). Anti-Mother is bland, bringing in Chino and fucking Cove Reber (?!) did not mask the dull songwriting and crap new drummer. The only song on that worth anything is There Will Be A Swarm of Hornets.

Really? I would have thought so before, but they're signed to a new label now, which I see as a good sign.

I heard that they got switched out of headliner with another band on their current tour, could be just a rumor/bullshit though.

I was thinking that they were likely going to break up after they left Solid State too. Who knows, maybe they will release one more record and call it quits.
