It was really shocking when I saw it. I think I was like 14. I watched it again a couple of years ago and it is pretty good, definitely pretty crazy. It's pretty stupid that they're remaking it.

yeah i agree, they won't be able to do half that stuff from the original. It will be a watered down lame ass remake. I hope they keep the penis biting scene!

This is Hollywood. I wouldn't be surprised if by 2025 some asshole goes, Hey let's remake The Godfather!

What couldn't they do that was in the original?

well theres like this uncut verision of the original that you can only see if you buy the uncut movie... and it's a lot more graphic with some scenes. Like the scene where the girl is forced to go down on her friend...

Early reviews of the remake sound pretty pleased with it. Last time I checked the original was Ondemand - hopefully it still is so I can check it out.

no im saying when it came out the first time it was banned in certain areas and that the directors made several edits to take out any material that was controversial. Most of the versions on tv are the edited... but there is a uncut version out there.
I am not saying that over times it became less graphic, I am saying that I wondered if the new movie has some of the same controversial scenes.

I own the uncut version and there is nothing in it they wouldn't do now.

The MPAA wasn't established until the early 80s right? I was always under the impression that while films have gotten more violent and gory over time, in the past filmmakers were able to get away with more for a given rating (or lack there of at that time).

someone told me that castration scene isn't in the remake......other then that I'd be willing to bet the original is alot more tame then this piece of shit remake turns out to be.

Mid 60's was when that MPAA introduced the 'current' rating system.

I agree with either Siskel or Ebert (forget who said it) that Hollywood is too busy doing remakes that don't warrant them when there's a ton of great ideas that went bad that deserve a better treatment.
I'd say there's a good case for this movie to remade (in the right hands, of course). But this movie has a great concept (killers savagely beat and murder two girls, then stay with the girl they just murdered's parents blahblah revenge), but it is so dated.
I mean, c'mon the crappy super-wacky cops, the terribly placed music, the rushed story. For a revenge movie, there was nothing menacing about it (besides maybe the dad going apeshit with the chainsaw or the murderer's dream of being tortured). I could definitely see the new one being better than the original.
I just hope they don't "Saw"-this and go for a cheap buck with crappy torture porn.

The movie was ver groundbreaking, but I can see your point. It could have been done better, especially the wacky cops. I just doubt it will be in the right hands. These remakes seem to be about making money by remaking classic horror films with all of the action and gore, but none of the substance. What's next, a remake of The Exorcist? What remake has been good so far? The Shining remake was awful, The Hills Have Eyes was awful, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was awful, Friday the 13th was awful. Halloween was good, but not even close to the original. I have no reason to believe this movie is going to be any better. It's getting ridiculous, Let the Right One In is set for a remake in 2010, and the movie just came out last year.

Was the worst of this current crop of shitty remakes, if you ask me. It border on being almost unwatchable.

Every scene the cops were in were laughably bad and made worse by one of them being the bad guy in Karate Kid. After all the hype I was so let down. The tone was way off, the acting unconvincing, lack of actual violence, slow pacing, and the list goes on. My main complaint is the rape and degredation of the girls was laughably bad and funny. It should have been horrifying and painful to watch but it was just cringe inducing. Also the killers are so nonchalant its ridiculous.
I do think this is a horror movie that should be remade and mostly likely will be better than the original.

I thought it was the best horror remake besides Dawn of the Dead. I actually cared about the characters which is a rarity in a horror movie, the pacing was awesome, it was well directed, and well acted. It was slow paced and character oriented for the first half and then it got fucking intense and never let up for the rest of the movie. Sure you can hate on it for the gore but thats it. The transformation of the father from a pussy to a killing machine is incredible as well as the violence he endures to save his baby. He gets fingers chopped off, cut up all over, beaten, bashed, stabbed and just generally fucked up . I'm not a big horror fan except for zombie movies, Freddy movies, and Eli Roth stuff but I fucking Hills Have Eyes.

I still can't see the merit in that movie. A family goes on a road trip. Then it's easy to guess they break down. Then, it's easy to guess they get killed one by one, then a male character emerges from the family and starts ridiculously killing off the mutants. It's recycled Hollywood any way I look at it. Just like many other horror films the monsters were mutant rednecks. This movie thrived on gore and did nothing else, for me anyway. I don't see how itt was character oriented because there was nothing special about the characters. Everyone was extremely typical. I think it tries to political too with the republican gun wielding father not being able to save his family, but the pussy democrat comes through when he has to. That is probably a stretch but it's cheesy nonetheless.
But I do agree with you about Dawn of the Dead.

My brother and I are going to see this tonight. 42% for a big-budget horror remake on RT isn't all that bad nowadays, so I expect a decent flick. Plus, I'm easy to please, so it won't have to be spectacular to keep my attention.

Yea, the Hills Have Eyes was pure shit. No one can convince me otherwise. What's even more sad is it was directed by the guy who did High Tension, which was pretty brilliant. Never saw the original though.
Watching LHOTL the original made me watch Straw Dogs which features a rape scene that does make you squirm and a story that actually is pretty damn suspenseful.
