What a great suggestion, glad someone else feels the same as me.

I checked out your blog, my favourite lyrics are 'Not Like This', and 'Disconnected'. Will 'Run Away' be making the album? I like that song, I'd like to hear you do a more 'chilled out' song like that. And hey I just realised I am a similar artist to you (Nathan Marks) on Last.fm, haha. Cool! Did you do that? Once I've uploaded my new music I'll add some info to mine.

Hey, just curious where that other Rise Against track came from, because here is a link to the tracklisting for Green Room Vol. 3 and there's only Prayer of the Refugee listed.

http://97xonline.com/greenroom/volume3.html

Swing Life Away is on Vol2. The site only lists POTR on volume 3, but Who'll Stop The Rain? is listed on the wikipedia page for the comp as track 12 and is track 12 on the album I downloaded. I don't physically own the CD so I can't verify it, but the quality of the recording is far superior to the webrip that was going around so I can only assume it is a CD rip.

I gladly remove the links and anyone who wants them can contact me. Whoever quoted me will need to edited their posts as well. I got to say it's kind of a joke that anything isn't ok to post since technically eveything that gets posted can be purchased . Even out of print stuff, there are plenty of sites to buy out of print stuff from. The criteria seems to be wether or not anybody is willing to pay for the song(s).

The difference being that if you manage to track down and buy an oop album it normally costs a lot and and is almost always through ebay or the like. This is from an actual business and is taking money directly out of their pocket.

Yes but all the itunes stuff takes money, albeit a small amount out of artists pockets, as does any import exclusives or b-sides on singles. These tracks are all added as incentive to buy the medium on which they are released. The simple fact is, no band makes any real money from their cds unless the write, record, produce, market and distribute the entire thing themselves. They make thier money from shirts and merch at shows. This moral grey area about what is ok to post is a joke. It's all stealing. There is no grey area.

We only post iTunes bonus tracks if their come with the "album only" option as it's just a cheap way to get you to buy the whole album again.
It's the same with the imports, it seems wrong to get people to buy the same album twice just for one or two tracks that were not included on their regions version. Of course none of what we post is legal but we try to keep it as respectful to the artists as possible. That's why we have these rules.

Actually, artists generally get no songwriting royalties from b-sides released with albums. Contracts cap at 10 or 11 songs. They're just released for product placement in stores or on iTunes.

I agree with you 100% that the way things are marketed is wrong and that's why I steal music and will share this stuff with others. But nothing posted is ok. The itunes stuff that is whole album is still a record sale lost because someone pirated the song and made it available for free so it takes money out of the label and the artists' pocket. If you want the track bad enough, buy the album from itunes rather than a physical copy. I personally would prefer music to be released digitally at high quality with no DRM. After years of collecting CDs, you run out of room real quick.

Yes but their placement on the album generates sales of the album for fans who want those songs. They make the money of the a-side, which you buy to get the b-side.

Like I said, I know nothing we post is technically legal and that's we try to keep the posting of stuff like digital exclusive tracks to a minimum. A single track from an album only deal on iTunes is nothing in the scheme of things and is really just a cheap way to squeeze money out of the consumer. I guess you could say we refuse to buy into it so we post them here.

Also interestingly enough, the guys in NFG ha no problem with us posting their b-sides on the blog and I'm sure a lot of other bands don't mind either. I know that's not really an argument but it's something to take into account.

I'm sure most of them don't but it's not always up to the artist. You have to take into consideration the money the label laid out for those songs to be recorded and the producer who is losing money from the lost sale. I'm convinced that iTunes is the devil. I have a feeling it is ultimately their decision to make it a full album purchase to get the bonus song. They would probably generate more sales if you could buy the exclusive song stand alone.

KeepYourHear you are absolutely right, it is stealing. But as long as people are unfair I'll work the system to get what I want. Your right about where artists make money too. 12Punk, I agree as well. If you want to support an artist go to their show and buy a t-shirt. This also in my opinion separates good artists from bad ones as a good band will put on a good concert ect. Anyways, I'm going to school for Audio and will most likely end up producing Live Sound as that is where the money is. Music mixers don't make any money anymore because no one buys albums except for hardcore fans ect. I justify my actions because of this:
We only post iTunes bonus tracks if their come with the "album only" option as it's just a cheap way to get you to buy the whole album again.

I have been recently doing the same. This way I actually buy the album myself and get the extra songs. Granted there is nothing like the awesomeness of an actual physical copy. Before I do this though I must know the artist and be a fan. Usually what I do and urge you all to do is to go ahead and download stuff off the internet. Then if you really like it, go out and buy it. Used CD stores are awesome. Or go to a concert so I can get paid too one day haha!

Honestly don't you think this is one of the best ways to expand your fanbase and spread awareness for yourself? Look at bands like Radiohead or Coldplay who gave everyone a free download off the new record. People love that and it works. "In Rainbows," arguably one of the best recent albums was a free download. Now they're even more huge. Something for other artists to consider for sure.

Yeah I always jump on the opportunity to buy a b-side or single when it's offered by its self. I tell people on here when I notice a request for a song that you can buy off iTunes or Amazon, but not everyone cares.

It still doesn't get you huge without promotion. Radiohead were already big, and few big bands had ever done this before. Hence the publicity.

Does anyone have the following stuff by Kevin Devine:

Live At Austin City Limits Music Festival 2007: Kevin Devine

Another Bag Of Bones Single

And the cover art for the 2007 Tour EP.

Thank you in advance.

New demo from my band for Josh, Lewis, anyone else who cares.

I know you said that this is a rough demo, but the acoustic guitar sounds a bit off man. Too much treble I think. I take it you'll fix that for the final version, so I wouldn't worry.

I like it though, when the full band comes in, it sounds more to the emo side of things, rather than pop-rock. Which is good. It sounds like you're finding your voice more too (not that it was ever a problem before or anything, you're just improving on what was already good).

Is the song being changed much?

The starting is too whiney, the part where the band comes in sounds like a million songs you've heard before on the radio and the song just goes nowhere.....but saying that I like the track more than what I have heard from you before and now i'm interested in hearing more so thanks for sharing :-)

haha good! it's kinda supposed to, i guess. i've been playing it acoustic-only for months, and i've been ready for people to hear it full-band :-)

thanks, man, i'm glad you dig it heh

hahaha the acoustic guitar sounds off because it's me playing it & i don't know how to play acoustic guitar. i hold down one, sometimes 2 frets, and strum away hahaha i have no idea what i'm doing, but that was the only day we could get my friend Dave's amazing-sounding guitar, so i had to play it since James, Steven, Tom, and even Ayres weren't around haha

that's the first time anyone's compared us to anything "emo", without meaning it as an insult or from people who don't actually know what emo is, so thank you hahaha thanks man. and yes, i feel much more confident vocally with these songs than i did with the old ones, mostly because i'm so much more confident about these songs in general haha :-)

i'm not sure what will be changed at this part. there's a good chance we're adding strings to the bridge & possibly piano. the female vocals in the bridge will be re-recorded and turned up considerably. other than that, this is more or less how the final version will sound sonically & structure-wise.

haha i'll take everything you said as a compliment considering your usertitle is "NFG Fucking Suck!!" haha so i'm under the impression you don't care for this style of music anyway hahaha so thank you, glad you're enjoying this better than our old stuff 'cause hey, i am too :-) thanks

Both of these tracks are on the Sequoia Throne - EP available on iTunes for only $1.49... however I believe instrumentals of the entire album are floating around, might have come as some kind of pre-order deal, I'm not sure if they're cool to post or not.

EDIT: If you buy Fortress on itunes (standard $9.99 fee) you get the entire album instrumental as well.

hahaha the acoustic guitar sounds off because it's me playing it & i don't know how to play acoustic guitar. i hold down one, sometimes 2 frets, and strum away hahaha i have no idea what i'm doing, but that was the only day we could get my friend Dave's amazing-sounding guitar, so i had to play it since James, Steven, Tom, and even Ayres weren't around haha

that's the first time anyone's compared us to anything "emo", without meaning it as an insult or from people who don't actually know what emo is, so thank you hahaha thanks man. and yes, i feel much more confident vocally with these songs than i did with the old ones, mostly because i'm so much more confident about these songs in general haha :-)

That's good to hear dude.

It's not the playing of it, the playing is fine for a demo. It just sounds really tinny, too much treble and not enough low and mid. Even when it is playing later with the full band you can still hear too much treble. Makes it sound not real, haha.

I guess I shouldn't upload this then?

How do you convert FLAC files to mp3's? I downloaded a Modest Mouse set but it won't play on my mp3 player because its FLAC. Any help would be cool including a link for the program I need

I don't suppose you're on a Mac? If so, there's a great little program called 'Switch (http://download.cnet.com/Switch-Audio-Converter-for-Mac/3000-2141_4-10703967.html)' that works wonders. If you're on a PC...sorry, I'm no help then.

I would highly recommened AudioConverter Studio (http://download.cnet.com/AudioConverter-Studio/3000-2646_4-10246683.html). Its free for a month, in which you have full capabilities. It works with a lot of file types, not just FLAC and you can adjust stuff like bitrate :)

I mean if you buy the album anywhere else you do not get them, so really they are bonus tracks. They are album only and cannot be purchased as single tracks... same with the two instrumentals that are also on the Sequoia Throne - EP... Haha now now they are getting popular and are loved by radio one and have had a front page cove on Kerrang! (whoopie doo). Your right though I should be ok sharing the damn acoutic thing when that's the reason why I got it but meah anything for a easy life.

Any idea when they Fray stuff got taken down?
Haha ok then how does "small up and coming UK band" sound? :stickout:

Probably the same reason this stuff got taken down, labels don't seem to distinguish between oop stuff and newish B-sides/bonus tracks.

A small UK band called The King Blues.
I didn't even realise the Fray stuff had been taken down. X-)

i wonder why the Fray stuff was taken down.

someone should put it back up, i wasn't done taking all of it hahaha

i've been thinking for a while

you know how itLeaked was originally just a blogspot page everyone could access, like bsidesrus is?

well, maybe bsidesrus is getting popular enough (not to that extent obviously, but you know what i mean) that we need to maybe update it and make it a site similar to that, so then (theoretically) there would be no stopping us from posting anything we want. private, possibly invite-only access, so then we can still post & share the things we're supposedly not supposed to share (i.e. stuff from T&N bands especially, 'cause i've got a shitload of that).

it'd take some doing most likely, but maybe it's time to take the site to a new level, no for shady reasons (it-leaked just wanted to post more stuff that "technically" is illegal), we still want to just be posting demos, b-sides, and other things one can't purchase anywhere or it would be hard/stupid for them to purchase, but with fewer restraints and restrictions and e-mails from bands/labels/managers complaining about the content being posted.

what's everyone else think?

i mean the blog itself, having a blog up with everything we've been posting & collecting over the years, was originally my idea that i brought up to josh, john, solomon, and a few others, though i'm obviously not active with it anymore. i'm just throwing an idea out there.
