i just saw it a few weeks ago for the first time...but the ending wasn't all that shocking. it was ok.

the conclusion negated the entire premise of the film. we watch the end and see no purpose in the previous 100 minutes of filmmaking. it was a gimmick film. It's conclusion answered next to nothing for it's audience. there would be no film unless we bought Keyser Soze(this practically mythical, omnipotent mafia crimelord) needing 5 lowlifes to do his job , and that Keyser Soze is too cool not to show his face to customs and police . now, kevin spacey may not have been keyser soze, but in that case, i wouldn't know why he had to fake a limp. the purpose of a twist ending is to put pieces together and wish you had seen it coming. i don't like the endings that change 95% percent of the film and come out of nowhere, and make me say "wow! i guess that could've happened". that's a gimmick.
with that being said, i still really loved this movie. the acting was so strong. i even enjoyed the writing. this was a great crime noir that really kept me entertained, even despite the silly ending. it certainly wasn't a terrible piece of genius though, as many think it is.

i like the part in the line up when they try to make the italian guy say "get outta da car, mother fucker!"
sooooo funny, oh and as previous people have said, kevin spacey is a complete and total badass in this film.
Great flick, but i wish Singer would do Xmen 3 :(

sadly, I must completely agree with you.
SPOILER ASSFUCKERS
the ending just leaves you thinking "so, i can make up everything I want cause for all I know, everything he narrated was a lie"...and that sucks because I can do that while taking a shit. Ya it was clever and outta the blue but it was like...a bit too much, I dunno.

The same goes for Saw. The ending was good, but still doesn't change the fact that for the first 98% of the movie you think it's predictable as hell.

The purpose of a twist ending isn't always to put pieces together, but to totally surprise the viewer. I think the thing that made that twist ending work so well, was that both storylines worked, the false one that kevin spacey was telling the officers, and the one that actually happened. Although the one Kevin Spacey was telling was 100% false, it still made for a very interesting watch, and was made even more interesting by the fact that he totally improvised the whole thing.
The entire premise of the film wasn't "negated" persay, because the premise was built around the twist ending to begin with.

There is no way that the killer in saw didn't twitch, or his chest didn't heave during a breath, or that he made no movement whatsoever through the entire film until the conclusion. No person could ever do that... i know its just a movie, but that ending really pissed me off. Pissed me off enough to want to see the next one.

The entire premise of the film wasn't "negated" persay, because the premise was built around the twist ending to begin with.ha! it's totally all in good fun, but the mere fact that your post was just as confusing as the movie makes me laugh. don't get me wrong, i still loved this movie. the script deserved its oscar, and kevin spacey is brilliant to say the very least. i agree with you about the twist ending. i do, but im just saying that when the entire film is staged to fit it's outlandish conclusion, it's a gimmick. the ending made it look like a tedious excercise in manipulation. the more i watch the film, the more i adjust to it, but it never answers the big question: 'why'
roger ebert is the most overrated, self righteous critic out there...and that's saying a lot!! his taste in movies is so peculiar and bizarre, and his critiques are pretentious. watching him trying to attack War Of The Worlds simply because he didn't like the tripods was a joke.

i feel that this movie has little to no replay value, the first time i saw it i thought it was great, but the second time i was a little bored because i knew the big plot twist

does "why?" need to be answered for it to be a great movie?
I think that if you can enjoy watching it, and at the end you can say, "well shit I didnt see that coming", then just hang the sense of it all and say "wow, good movie" and move on.

yeah some twists really hurt more viewings, ex. sixth sense, signs (water!?11? lame)
but some twists make you want to go back and watch again, ex fight club
I think this movie deserves second viewings, imo.

i don't understand how people compare this to sixth sense.
*spoilers*
i had no idea bruce willis was dead in ss but from the moment spacey was shown as the only survivor i knew he was keyser. i don't know how people didn't figure this out.
p.s. those of us who love spacey should love bryan singer because he gave spacey his big break in this film

your right, but in this case, the "why" wasn't "why did that happen", it was "why the hell was this movie made when it's ending negated the entire premise of the film". it made into what seemed like an exercise

Yeah, good scene. I read somewhere that that was actually Benico Del Toro's actual repsonse and was offended that they asked him to repeat it in english. Good acting by them all

Yeah, as much as I like it, it couldn't break into the "favorites" category. I don't know...really, it just misses that, though. I guess the fact that it's not the most "re-watchable" movie hurts its case. At least that's what it is for me. I don't like the Stephen Baldwin, either. At all.

I did think that it seemed too formulaic at times, which is probably what ruins it's ability to be re-watched often. It's definitely not a movie that I would insist everyone go see.

bump because fans of this movie should appreciate this lyric:

Had to get my talk to properly explain my walk

Watch how they mugs drop when they see my verbal's able
