I'm dusting off Voices for the first time in a long time.

I almost picked up one of their albums the other day but wasn't sure what the best place to start would be, and I thought listening to them a bit online would be a good idea before committing to an album. I'd listen now, but I'm on my sucky computer, so no can do. (Also, I'm commenting this thread because it's pretty sad, and I'd like to give it some more time on the front page.)

Most "H&O purists" (which is just incredibly silly to say) will mention how much more soul/blues oriented the '70s albums were, but I find that they're much less self-aware of the kitschyness of two white guys co-opting Blues/Soul and playing it straight. Starting with Voices in 1980, H&O took over the entire production duty, integrating a keener eye for pop in this Blue-Eyed (read: white people) Soul "genre" and the result was magnificent mainstream music that toted a line between absurdity, seriousness and a shrewd eye for deconstructing genres. That paragraph was a bit indulgent and pretentious. Let me rephrase: I enjoy the string of albums from Voices to Big Bam Boom. Start with Voices if you're inclined.

Ha, cool. I'll hit up those albums when I get the chance. I'm always down for some good, fun pop jams.

I'm not a huge fan of their other work, but the Bird and the Bee released a 9-track cover album of Hall and Oates songs that are pretty darn good.

Someone other than me likes "Adult Education." Badass. Like a lot of their stuff, but yet to pick up an album.

Daryl Hall's solo song "Dreamtime" is pretty f'awesome too.

"Adult Education" is a top-ten single from the American musicians Hall & Oates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_%26_Oates) and was released in 1984. The track is featured on the duo's first compilation album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compilation_album), Rock 'n Soul Part 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_%27n_Soul_Part_1). It was one of two new tracks that were recorded specifically for the compilation release and hit number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Hot_100).

YOU ARE SO THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKES THIS!

I like Adult Education.

You just don't hear about that one much. It was a compilation-only track, never gets any radio play anymore, blah, blah, blah. Private eyes are watching YOU!!!

That compilation sold over two million copies, and I hear it often. Admittedly, I don't hear it mentioned to the degree that people name-check their six #1 singles, but then, those tracks were proliferated by other media and supported more due to their success which was probably your point to begin with.

I don't know why I'm knitpicking this though. It's fun. You know a song that actually isn't really discussed often? Going Thru the Motions. That track is badass and so excessive.

This thread reminds me that I haven't picked up those albums yet. I should probably get one of them sometime soon. Sadly, I've bought a lot of music lately and will likely be buying lots in the coming months, so yeah. Hm. I think I'll fit in purchasing or downloading a good compilation to tide me over soon, and then later, when there's a lull in stuff I wanna buy, hit up those albums Todd recommended some time ago. Yeah, sounds like a plan. Sweet.

So Hall had a solo album produced by Robert Fripp, and I'm just now hearing about this shit. Crazy.

Absolutely, but I'd attribute the sound discrepancies between the tracks we posted to the production.

I've only ever listened to that one song from that one movie soundtrack, because, you know, I'm not a "real" fan. But that one song Kearny posted was really good, so I might look into getting the album. Yeah.

Oh absolutely. Hall's a phenomenally talented singer, but he's smart enough to let the producer do their job.

I was listening to the Sacred Songs album while in my office before my morning class and the guy fits seamlessly with Fripps' engineering. I'd never have thought they'd mesh well. That's a testament to both guys' talents (respectively).

Recently listened to Voices and enjoyed it very much. Not quite as good as H2O though.
