Below is a message from Andy of The Junior Varsity (http://www.thejuniorvarsity.com/). Please take the time to read each sentence, word and letter. Thanks!
Hello everyone,
As I am sure most of you have heard, my girlfriend of 3 and a half years was found brutally murdered in Mississippi.
Olamide was with me since I started this band about 3 years ago. She has seen the band progress since day one and has always been very proud of our pursuit at becoming a great band. She would be happy to know how much you guys have supported me in dealing with all of this. I will never be the same person again. It is impossible to accept that she will not be coming back to comfort me like she used to. I would complain to her so much about how i wanted the band to be progressing more and she always consoled me. I spent countless hours begging and urging agents and bands to help us with very little results. She was always there for me if i was upset about anything and i was always there for her. We kept to ourselves very much. We never had any money to go out and do much....we didnt even have cable....we literally only had each other and we were content. She loved coming to our shows. I could never even understand how should could want to go so often, but every weekend she wanted to travel with us to whatever broke ass show we were playing. She loved watching the band get better and better. Its sad to think she will never hear our next record and will never see a show again.
So, at least, after 2 very painful weeks, it is over. For her family and me it is going to be very hard to regroup and feel normal again. All i have in my life is my band. I have worked so hard at it and my dream was to one day support olamide and me through the efforts of the band. That is what gave me my main drive in being an ambitious musician. All i can ask is that you please help me try and realize my goal. I know you have all been very supportive through all this....ive received hundreds of messages....but please turn that support into support for something I love and that Olamide loved too. Please come out to some of our upcoming shows if you can. I really need the assurance that what i am doing is not in vain, now more than ever. Let me feel like my band is worth something and that all of you believe in us as much as i do. Nothing else matters much to me anymore and I am left feeling like our world completely evil and unfair. Please bring me some relief in proving that this is not true. Help me to feel normal again and gain a sense of accomplishment. I could be at home wallowing in my own self pity but instead i opted to be on the road with my band. This is what she would want me to do, as hard as it is for me to stand up in front of people and play my guitar, i feel compelled to do it. If I am brave enough to continue playing shows despite the horror i have faced then i am asking that you please come out and support us for that reason. I am not going to give up on this band....not even when misfortune and horror continue to surround us. If I am not going to give up, I am asking all of you not to give up on us either. I have a new reason to continue doing this...a reason that will keep me from ever wanting to stop. We are playing all over the country for the next month and all i can ask is that you try to come out and support us when we need it more than ever. Thanks for reading this.
very sincerely,
andy wildrick
God I hope things are going to turn around for TJV. They've been so strong through everything...

I saw them the day this happened...for every band, not even just them, it's important to go check out the shows and pay the $8 bucks to support the scene when they come around. That's not to pay for their Rolls, it's for their gas and food money. When you're in a van all day every day, there's very little human interaction, so I can imagine how important getting out and seeing people at these shows is for a band. Well in this case it's even more so, so if you see the junior varsity on the bill coming through your area, pop and and check it out. see if any of the bands catch your ear or just go and enjoy the night. it's not like more people going to their shows right now is going to make them rich...but it'll help them out in a much more important way.

What happened to him is nothing short of a nightmare come true. I could never imagine what he is going through.
I am not an overly emotional guy, but that almost made me cry at work. Stay strong, Andy.

i know this kind of comes across as me having a go but i don't mean any disrespect. If you've seen my other comments you have seen my sincere sympathy for both family and andy. I cannot imagine going through something like this.
HOWEVER
I know that what she wouldve wanted and the way of Andy trying not to think about it too much is for him to continue playing with TJV straight away. BUT i just feel that the comments made above were too much about TJV and not enough about his grief or his true feelings. Fair enough i'm sure he doesn't want to express them on the internet to everyone but it just seemed strange that there was more talk of TJV than him missing her.

I went to their show the on October 14th, and they were awesome. I never really got into them but, when I saw them live, they were amazing. You should all go see them. I feel really bad about what happened. And, I makes me sick to my stomach.

I definately can see where you are coming from with what you are saying and I respect your opinion. I believe he addressed this in the manner which he did because alot of what he is feeling is personal and as much as bands consider fans to be friends ( at least in the punk/hardcore/underground rock scene) there is still alot that you want to keep to yourself and to those truely close to you. I think this message was a way of him stating the status of the band as well. I am sure that people were wondering if they were going to continue touring after this tragic event. That is how i saw it and I definately think that he did a nice job of doing so especially in the wake of all that has happened.
My deepest condolences to all those who this has effected. Losing someone is tough but losing someone in this mannor is tragic.

I am glad he didn't really talk about his grief. That's his business, not ours. He said that the two of them kept to themselves pretty much. I know the road can be a lonely, wary place. If this is his way of coping, I hope he is able to get through it out there. A brother of one of my closest friends in h.s. got brutally murdered, and she didn't speak for weeks. She didn't know how to cope. I honestly don't think there would be a better way to deal with this than to do the one thing that brings you, and others joy.

hmmm....you have to understand that is is a public address and you cant really judge a man's words without taking a walk in his shoes beforehand. i hope nothing like this tragedy ever strikes you or anyone else, but if it does, i hope you can find words to use that you would consider appropriate.

i feel like the post is him trying to deal with whats going on, as publicly as he can. and all the public really knows is his band. hes not going to do an entire post about how sad he is, how much he misses her, etc. if the band is what is going to get him through this, then he should post all he wants about people supporting the band.

Exactly. For Andy, seeing people who care about his band at a show can pick him up a little bit. I am going to do my best to make it out to one of their shows. I saw them at Warped Tour this past summer and they are a great live band, so if they are near you, go! Buy a shirt, their great album, and say hi to them. Hell, Andy and his band need their fans and supporters more than ever. I know when I see them, I'll be singing my heart out to their songs and probably will be crying. Stay strong, Andy, my prayers are with you.

This is such a horrible thing that's happened and I really feel for Andy and Olamide's friends and family.
I also think it's really sad that this thread, instead of just mourning her loss and supporting Andy, has turned to debating whether or not his letter was "mournful" enough for his girlfriend or if he was just trying to get heads at shows. Give the guy a freaking break. Could you write a letter that coherent and optimistic if you were feeling that kind of grief? I know I probably couldn't.

Whoa. I wonder how long it took him to find the words to put that together. I cannot even begin to imagine how hard that would be.
You know at every show he plays, especially ones at home, he's gonna look out at the crowd and remember how he used to see her face there all the time. I really hope that TJV suceeds, then they'll have something big that Olamide was a part of in the beginning, kind of like a tribute.

I agree, maybe we could start something similar to the orange band project. Donate the money,in Oladmines name, to a cause of Andy or Oladmine's Familys choice. For everyone that donates, they could receive a sticker to put on the back windshield of their car or wherever. or something of that sort.Maybe thats not a good idea. thats just my take on things.

my idea was very similiar to yours

HOWEVER
I know that what she wouldve wanted and the way of Andy trying not to think about it too much is for him to continue playing with TJV straight away. BUT i just feel that the comments made above were too much about TJV and not enough about his grief or his true feelings. Fair enough i'm sure he doesn't want to express them on the internet to everyone but it just seemed strange that there was more talk of TJV than him missing her.
I agree .. I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought that. I was touched up to the point where he mentioned wanting to someday support Olamide and himself, and after that, it turned into this horribly ugly plea. Oh well. The whole situation sucks. I've seen these guys play with TREOS a bunch of times way back in the day.

No, shut up, this is not a plea. Andy just lost his very close girlfriend and probably has a feeling of just giving up on everything in life. I know I would feel like that. Music and his band is all he has. He needs his fans to help him. Seeing people singing along and showing that they care help show that Andy should continue on in his band and that many many many people care about him. It disgusts me to think that some of you think that Andy is using this horrific tragedy to push his band. That is not the case. Andy needs this support.

An idea that has not been expressed yet is a push from viewers to get the media to get the word out to find Ola's car. I have not seen any indication that her car has been found. I would think that finding her car would help towards solving her murder. The media was great about posting the make, color, etc. of the car in the Washington D.C. sniper incidents and it helped capture the shooters. In this case, they should have the license plate numbers also which will really help. Get Oprah to help and Nancy Grace of CNN. If her car is no longer missing....just ignore this post.
Also, from the sounds of it, the charity of choice of Ola and Andy might be either TJV or her college loans. Just a thought.

even though this may not get read, i'd still like to say it:
i had heard about this a few days ago, but reading the horrible story made me literally cry all over my keyboard. i have a boyfriend in a band, too. reading about how she would always go to shows and would be the supporter when things weren't going well w/ labels, band stuff...whatever hit so close to home. we don't have much money either, and we are content with being together as well. we have dated for three years as well. no, i won't say that i know what you are going through because i obviously do not. your words struck a nerve. what i will do is hold on to him a little tighter when he is home because life is absolutely too short. i am so sorry that this has happened. my heart is with you, the family, the band, the friends...

I've seen these guys play with TREOS a bunch of times way back in the day.Its not a horrible ugly plea. Andy's life was music and Ola. That's it. He was the happiest person in the world with those two things in his life. I remember a year ago before they were signed and living in a pretty shitty house and their power or water would get turned off, but they kept on going because music and their friends were what drove them to try and make it. They could have easily given up then, but they didn't.
I would like to think victory could help tooYou would think that, but in the case of Victory you are dead wrong. When asked to help, Victory only put up a tiny blurb about her on the NEWS section of the site, and then continued updating with other news above the post about her. I'm not going to go into anything else that was said/done but I'll say this: Brummel is extremely insensitive.
Also, if you live in Illinois/Missouri:
November 8th they are playing at the Creepy Crawl in downtown St.Louis, Missouri. I urge everyone to go to this show and show their support for the band. Matchbook/Gatsbys/Armor For Sleep are in town that same night, and the guys were already somewhat bummed about this fact before any of this happened. It would mean the world to the guys if everyone who could showed up to the show to show their support for them.

all i have to say is what they had was truly pure love. only wanting each other and nothing more is the height of selfless love. i will definitely check out the new music that comes from this band because of everything he has gone through. I believe he will take a tragedy like this and make something beautiful out of it, if it could be possible.

i went to there first show back on tour in bradford last night, even though i had soccer practice til late, i went straight to the concert so i could talk to andy because i felt thats the only reason i had to go. i takled to him after the show, because he was just miserable mood and yo ucould tell, it was hard for him to stand up ther eand play, i got the pleasure of getting up the strenght to talk to him and tell him that i have been praying for him..and tell him that i will continue to pray for him..that may have been the closest i had seen him to smiling as he hugged me and told me how much it meant to him..if you get the chance go to there shows, buy some merch and most of all talk to andy and let him know hes in your thoughts..it may not mean as much to you to him, it really touches him, you can tell by the look on his face...everybody go and support these guys, they all need it

i don't really understand how some people can think what he said was just a "plug" for TJV. are you not reading between the lines? everyone should know by now that andy (and the rest of TJV) do NOT fuck around when it comes to their band. they do what they need to do, no matter what it takes (being robbed, bad tours, etc.). the fact that andy mentioned TJV in that message shouldn't be surprising, since it seriously is the only thing he has left to hold onto. he is merely trying to salvage what motivation or determination he has left in him and hes asking for a little help. not so the band can be uber popular and grace the cover of AP magazine, but because with every show and every face that he sees at a show- his belief and faith in the band and its music grows. right now, thats what he needs, and thats why hes asking for support from people. sure they need money to pay for gas, but like i said, to say its a "plea" is ridiculous. this band stands for everything that a struggling working band should be.

that's just what i thought :/ i can't imagine what he's going through right now and i know he must find it hard to put into words what he's thinking but what he said there was kinda just... weird. it really just came across like he's exploiting the situation for the band's benefit, as much as i'm sure this isn't the case. i for one would be very uncomfortable knowing that increased support for and popularity of my band was only the result of the death of someone i love. the point i'm trying to make is that there are things that ARE more important than bands and music, and his choice of words didn't really reflect that at all. i mean no disrespect to him at all and my thoughts are with him and his girlfriend's family.

Don't get me wrong, this is so horrible and terrible for the friends and family of Ola. However... I have NEVER seen such shameful promotion of a band in my life!!! The girl was just found brutally murdered and all he gives her is few sentences on how she came to the shows. And then he proceeds to write a paragragh (twice as long) about how people need to come to his shows now, to make HIM feel better.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING?
Instead of mourning the loss of a loved one in such a tragic way, or talking about HER (I know it's crazy...) and the great life she has lived/people she has touched, he jumps right into the "Junior Varsity campaign".
Either he is completely selfish or a total idiot. Ola was a great and wonderful person and deserved better than that! Ola is so excited that he used this forum to promote TJV on the day of her death.
PLEASE DO NOT GO TO SEE THESE SHOWS.

If this is all has to do with my comment. You are misunderstanding me, I Love this band and stated that the message felt wrong to me, I also said I could be wrong, I sat there and debated about sending that comment but it was really bothering me. I as a fan felt wrong about that, and the message board is the perfect place to let that vent. I meant no disrespect and if I did disrespect anyone I will delete my own comment because that was not my intention. I'm sorry.

This is quite possibly the dumbest remark ive ever read........andy and the rest of the band are doing the only kind of coping they can, and thats getting away from the matter and hitting the road.......is it too much to ask to see some faces at shows???? Do you know how it feels to play infront of 10 kids? Now imagine playing infront of 10 kids and your girlfriend was bruttally murdered. Just makes a bad situation worse. Andy needs the assurance that if hes going to go on as ola would have wanted him to that things are going to get better........at some point it becomes too much and there IS a breaking point. Count the number of sentences where he talks about his GF.
Now count the number of sentences that reference his band.
That statement was mostly about his band. If you gave it to an english professor and asked what the main theme was, he would say his band. The fact that he talked about his band that much is just that... a fact.

You're just as twisted as the guy in the band for saying that the band deserves more kids at their shows because of this. The band deserves fans when more people like their music. Until then, the band deserves the condolences and respect from everyone else regarding the situation, but certainly not a financial gain or a boost in popularity... and to ask for any more than that is flat out inhumane.

That must have hurt so much just to type out. Imagine typing "my girlfriend was brutally murdered", it's just unreal. I hope you can stay strong Andy.

Did victory help at all? Anything on their website? Couldn't they have pushed the story to MTV? I'm not pointing fingers but i think if I was TJV I'd be upset they didn't try to help.....

that is so sad and awful. I can't imagine what that must be like. I just really feel bad for him. I don't know what I would do. I don't think i would be strong.

You are an insensitive asshole. I am sure after his girlfriend was MURDERED he was really trying to plug his band. You ever stop to think maybe he didn't have the time, energy, or willpower to think about how jerks like you might perceive his message? The man needs to know that he has something worth living for, and if that is his band, then I will do all I can to see one of his shows.
Pull your head out of your ass, stop being such a shithead, and think before you talk/post. And even if you are so much of a monster to think something like this, keep it to yourself. No one needs to hear your trash. Thanks.

This is so terrible, and so, so scary. I'll be praying for Ola's family and TJV as they both try to recover what they can from this terrible loss.
Stop criticizing Andy for his message. It's enough that he even had the strength to address TJV's fans. He's just looking for the source of support that he knows he can count on- this community of people who love music, just like he does.
Go see TJV, buy an album, send a note. Just let 'em know you're thinking about them now.

This band is great and I hope if they are in NY, I will catch a show. I heard one of their samples back in July from the Victory Records sample cd that Straylight Run promoters gave out. I really like the song.
It is really hard to lose someone so special. my condolences to the band, family, and friends...

I searched on their website maybe did they did a little news post, but found nothing, but that was yesterday I think, maybe they updated it by now. Eitherway, in my opinion they should have done more.

Count the number of sentences where he talks about his GF.
Now count the number of sentences that reference his band.
That statement was mostly about his band. If you gave it to an english professor and asked what the main theme was, he would say his band. The fact that he talked about his band that much is just that... a fact.
...
Stop drinking the kool-aide, dude.
You're insane.
Yea I agree with you, and maybe partially with the guy who freaked out in the other paragraph you quoted, (even though he was a pussy and made a new user name for this post). This whole thing rubbed me the wrong way, and initially i felt horrible for the guy. Now I just don't know, and I just feel horrible for her and her family

I was told that they did not want to be accused of trying to gain publicity for their band over this tragedy.
you know what a decent person wouldnt have given two shits what people thought the underlying intent was......bottom line was someone very close to one of tonys bands was missing........ victory has as many resources at its disposal as anyone.......and decided they didnt want to loose integretiy. CLASSY MOVE!
You could have helped bring the story to the forefront of peoples attention and possibly have stoped this....but you chose to keep what little scene points you have..........Victory records is nothing more than the faceless corporation they try to convince us on a daily basis that they arent!

Some people on this website make me sick. Imagine one of your loved ones fucking dying let alone being brutally murdered. I don't think he wants to mourn over the death more and more as that won't make him feel better. He wants to move on how Ola would want him to with the only thing he has left, his band. He wants to still believe people care about him and there is something left on this earth for him to live for. Without his band, there isn't. I can't even imagine how hard writing that message would be; his girlfriend was just fucking murdered. I don't think I'd wanna dwell on the death and talk about my loved one for pages and pages. He's looking at what he has left.
It upsets me that he might come onto this site and see the messages from people claiming this is a 'plug' or 'plea'. Can you imagine how bad or guilty it would make the guy feel.
