Hey, so I need some advice, suggestions, or recommendations on buying a new, good quality, moderately light weight, semi-weighted (at the least) midi keyboard with a decent amount of effects. I have NO experience with buying keyboards. I am a very experienced classical pianist. I've been playing straight classical for the last 12 years, and know A LOT about pianos. I've been researching quite a bit, but I'm still incredibly confused when it comes to all of the effects and what not. If I could get some suggestions that would be great. If you are suggesting specific models my absolute max for price is $700.
Thanks :-)

If it's gonna be midi, are you running it through a laptop? If so, get Reason (I like version 3 more than 4..) and get the Abbey Roads Pianos plug in. I'm not sure the model number but M Audio makes a semi-weighted keyboard

Does it need to be 88 keys or will 61 do? For sure no synth action? Yeah, it's not going to feel as great to you, but you'll have way more options to choose from.
Just in case you didn't know, a MIDI keyboard doesn't make any sound. The sound comes from some other source. It only generates MIDI data, which is read by something else which produces the sound.

I have a Yamaha Portable Grand that you can use as a regular keyboard, or it can be hooked up as a MIDI controller. The onboard sounds are nothing special, so it'd probably sound better using Reason.

61 keys is great for my purposes i think. I've rethought this and decided to start with i might not want a midi keyboard unless it has optional midi hook up and regular use

What do you actually want to do with it? Record? Play live? Do you want to play piano parts or synth parts?

i really want the capabilities for all of that if it's possible. there is a band i might be joining when i eventually get a synth or keyboard w/synth-sounding voices, so in that respect i need an instrument to play live synth but other than that, i'm open to almost anything. this is about making my own new music, hopefully joining/creating a band, and just enjoying myself.

Then you definitely dont want a MIDI keyboard
