There are two extremely talented and hilarious groups of comedians/actors responsible for making some of the best movies and television in comedy right now.

The members of MTV's the State (one of the best sketch comedy shows of all time) have also made Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models, Reno 911, The Baxter, Stella, The Ten, and more...
Some of the people included in this group are David Wain, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Showalter, Michael Ian Black, Thomas Lennon, Ken Marino, Kerri Kenney, etc.
And then there are additional actors who have joined this group and consistently appear in their productions, such as Rashida Jones, A.D. Miles, and both Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks (who later ended up appearing in some of Apatow's stuff as well).

Judd Apatow and his posse have been responsible for Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, Walk Hard, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, etc...

Which group is better?

I'm inclined to vote Apatow only because I hadn't even heard of The State before this thread.

The Apatow movies are better, but the State crew are definitely a better breed of funny people. That said, they're basically integrating with each other, anyway. So I'm not going to vote.

I agree with this guy. It's too tough, plus they are kinda integrating especially Paul Rudd. If I were going to vote, I'd probably vote for Apatow though.

I would argue that Wet Hot American Summer is funnier than any of Apatow's movies

Can I just vote for Paul Rudd? He's the man

I would argue that Wet Hot American Summer is funnier than any of Apatow's moviesby far. they both make great movies, but wet hot goes above and beyond the rest, thus, the state wins.

Agreed. Where's the other option? I vote Paul Rudd.

I've never seen The State but a friend of mine raved to me about it for years. I like Apatow's stuff, it's fun and is always good for a laugh but Wet Hot American Summer is a lot funnier and has stayed funnier longer, for me, than anything Apatow has done.

I'm not going to vote because I never saw The State but I didn't really like The Ten all that much and The Baxter didn't leave much of an impression on me. I thought Role Models was really funny, but I'll have to see how it holds up on repeat viewings. I think I'll give The Baxter another viewing soon too because I don't remember much of it at all.

On the other hand, Freaks and Geeks was such an amazing show it's hard to contend with....Oh well, I think both groups are pretty hilarious.

Where can I see The State now? I heard awhile ago they were going to release a dvd but I haven't heard anymore about that.

The State dvd set has been ready for a while but Viacom keeps pushing back the release date. I think now they are planning on releasing it whenever the State movie comes out.

Good to know. I didn't know they were even making a movie. My friend will be thrilled haha. No word on when that'll be out?

I also agree on the Paul Rudd option. Probably the best subtle comedy actor out there right now.

exactly. except on the state being a better breed of funny people, they are too interchangeable at this point to really compare and separate the two. role models feels much more apatow than State

Freaks and Geeks is probably my favorite thing Apatow has done. It's a masterpiece of a show.

I can't wait for that. I was so pissed when Stella got cancelled.

Tough, tough decision. I think Freaks and Geeks is one of the finest shows EVER made, and Wet Hot American Summer is absolutely hilarious. I'd probably have to go with Apatow, but damn is it close.

If we were comparing 40yov to WHAS apatow would win but if it were his catalog as a whole then The State.

If it's nearly as good as Stella, I'm excited.
