i have always who officially counts how many are sold. or instance, if a band has 500 cd's while out on the road and they report they sold 300 of them, who makes sure they are telling the truth and whatnot? also, do individual stores turn in a receipt of what has been sold? i'd be really glad if someone could give me some answers. :) thanks

i agree, but i guess if you look at the fact that there are 6 billion people in the world, the 4,500,000 number isnt as high. Dont get me wrong, im not by any means taking anything away, AT ALL. because i think its impressive when bands break 6 figures these days, but its just incredible to think of the huge amount of people in the world who probibly have no idea who green day even is!

alright, I wasn't so sure because those cds are physically scanned when they are sold. I'm going to go ahead and guess thats where panic at the disco is selling most of their cds. From what I know, CDs sold at shows actually count for "more" than at a store. Bands fill out the CDs sold at shows themselves (yah, I bet they're always 100% right .. haha), and there is a margin of error or something that is accounted for - CDs at shows, and CDs at "mom and pop" stores that report actually count for like "3" cds sold (to make up for those that will be missed in recording). This is how someone explained it to me a looong time ago, and no one told me if it was changed. So take it with a grain of salt ..

I'm pretty shocked at the total numbers for Thrice - Vheissu. 59,729 is a pretty small amount so far.
There was alot of momentum leading up to release of Vheissu. Here's to hoping more people get into Thrice. It's one of those albums that makes your jaw drop. Seriously.

for people questioning why 34,000 can pick up green day this past week,
green day sold about 10 million copies of dookie in the US.
that was 10 or so years ago - so there are people that may have forgotten about green day until, wake me up when september ends hit the radio - or people like me who are just slow as hell in getting some cd's.
or even kids that are turning 12 and whose parents wouldnt let them buy the cd unless they paid for it themselves.
i would find it hard to imagine any other band selling that many every week, but its a band that has a history of selling millions, if it was any other band pushing those numbers i would be questioning it.
american idiot has songs on it that are keeping it alive - it wasnt a 2 single cd - they are on the 4th or 5th one now right?
thats 4 chances to get people to pick up a cd - every single has been pulling people in.
maybe i should have waited until the morning to post this, 4 am and my thoughts jump around

Good explanation! It hasn't changed, but all cd sales are weighted in a lot of ways, and don't believe people who tell you differently, haha. CDs sold at larger chains (bookstores, Tower, etc) sometimes are weighted more, and also region/geography weights sales. Its all a bunch of hooey. Venue scan also doesn't get in as fast - the bands have to send in their venue scan sheets, signed off by the venue personell, or fax it in - and it doesn't always get entered for 2-4 weeks, depending. So, a lot of times, if the person at the venue is anal about merch, they aren't padded. A band counts in their cds at the venue, and says, ok, I have 25 cds. Then at the end of the night, the venue person sits there and breathes down your neck while you count what you have left. If you have 10 left, they're gonna know that, and they're also going to sign your venue scan saying so.
But I guess you can forge that too, but that's not nice.
Sorry about the rambling, its early. And I said hooey.

seriously, she's a fake. she doesn't write her own music (i know she says she's a co-writer, but you can tell which lyrics are hers because they're absolutely ridiculous) and then we find out she doesn't sing her own songs. what part about her act can we classify as music?
I'm sorry if this has already been posted: but does anyone else find it funny how ashlee simpson is no longer popular? Her first record went platnum in 3 days and this new one hasn't even sold 500,000 and it's been out for like a month. All I have to say is: it's about fucking time!

A huge step in the right direction... but it's still very sad that over 400,000 people bought an album based on one or two songs for an artist who holds no credibility and only sells in the first place because she has a famous older sister.
