mwY

mwY. Damn it would suck if they lose first round.

mewithoutYou. This isn't even a contest.

mewithoutYou by far. one of the most talented bands out there.

Wow, if mewithoutYou gets knocked out in the first round... I don't even know. Aaron Weiss is such a great lyricist, as well an overall amazing (and bizarre) guy.

irthesteve

Weezer for sure, Blue and Pinkerton alone could win this, but throw in Red and Maladroit and it's no competition anymore

These bands aren't even comparable.

Keagan Ilvonen
03/15/09, 09:36 PM
It's hard to compare these bands. Blue album and Pinkerton are two of my favorite albums from the 90's but after that the weezer gimmick got old to me. While mwY has released great albums that actually have lyrical depth to them. I'm going to have to go with mwY.

TheWeakest
03/15/09, 09:40 PM
that sucks for mewithoutYou getting paired up with Weezer first round. Wow i'm actually looking at this like its March Madness.

idk if youve seen MWY live. or listened to them for that matter. im sure id pick brokencyde or any shitty band over MWY. i saw them like 2 weeks ago and they just....i cant discribe it. they tried so hard to turn all the booing and middle fingers and get off the stage into positive energy.

This is the only one I've voted on that I'm siding with the leader. These seedings are kind of odd.

I feel like Weezer has more scene cred and more universal appeal.. easy choice.

I'll tell you, the first time I saw mewithoutYou live, I was stunned. I had no idea what I had just witnessed and I didn't want to know or remember. That being said, I have since changed my mind, because I opened up my mind to what they were doing, realizing that it was completely different from every other cookie-cutter band out there, both stylistically and lyrically. Granted, Weezer have been around much, much longer and have paved the way for a lot of bands in the "scene" today. But, unlike those bands mewithoutYou actually display creativity and make good use of their talent. With that, I will say mewithoutYou is not a band "for everyone". Seems like you either love them, or you hate them. Hate just takes so much more effort.

Anton Djamoos
03/15/09, 10:20 PM
Were the bands picked at random for the MM thing?
The bands themselves? I took from AP.net's last.fm group and I took news posts into consideration. It's a good list.

GRIFFARD
03/15/09, 10:23 PM
Weezer is huge, so this sucks for mwY. Weezer's career is like a trigonometric curve with x->infinity, y->zero.
as in, they're getting worse and worse.
mwY is consistent, and even gets better imo. so yeah

03/15/09, 10:28 PM

03/15/09, 10:57 PM
man i am probably one of the few people on here you can say they own every album from both of these bands and i will tell you straight up... weezer is nothing compared to mewithoutYou.

mewithoutYou is a band holding up what little creativity still lives in the music scene these days... weezer is a band that makes a living off of catchy songs, annoying, distorted power chords, and simple repetitive riffs. Rivers is a great singer and weezer is great at what they do, they are a band i do like and everything...

but as muscisians... they sympolize uncreative, rehashed, formulaic music that, since pinkerton, has lacked great effort both intrumentally and lyrically.

blue and pinkerton are both amazing albums, but even if it was catchy, everything save for malidroit has been rehashed garbage. and malidroit, while not rehashed garbage to the same extent... still is not that great at all.

i understand blue and pinkerton are better than any cd mwY has made (thought brother, sister is up there), and i totally agree. but you can't just take their good without measuring the bad, and there are few albums in my cd collection i care less about than green, red, and make believe. those albums drag the rest down pretty badly. every mewithoutYou album has been good so far, save for brother, sister which was incredible. weezer has released too many embarrassing efforts for me to regard so highly anymore.

it is depressing to know that weezer will win this mainly because everyone knows them and some of there songs, but few people know mewithoutYou. they play a music style that will never get them the credit or recognition they deserve.

again, i like weezer. that's why i own their albums. they are a great band when they were more inspired. but in terms of basketball, this is like you trying to tell me that vince carter is a better player than shane battier. you may not like shane battier.. or even know who he is, but he is pure substance on the basketball court. vince carter is a lazy underacheiver who puts up big numbers on teams that never get far. shane battier plays the game with respect, and impacts his teammates to play better. his teams are always competitive and potent. any team in the nba would take battier over carter, save for a GM who needs a marketable player just to draw interest to a terrible team.

have you heard the majority of the bands covered on this website? seriously. i think weezer deserves a little bit more credit than that.

I like Weezer... but they haven't done anything that makes them what they are known to be in years. that's why I compared them to Vince Carter... they are big underachievers. If they never did blue or pinkerton, i'd consider them a solid band, not up with mewithoutYou, but a solid band. but because of how much BETTER blue and pinkerton was than their albums since, weezer is instead a super talented, super underachieving band. nothing on their albums other than maladroit felt all that inspired, and that was only instrumentally. i haven't felt connected to a weezer song lyrically since pinkerton. i always just get the vibe off their post pinkerton albums like "crap, well i guess we are weezer or whatever so lets write some songs or something, make fans happy and what not"

i didn't really find a single song on either of their last two albums interesting... some catchy songs, yeah... but nothing felt personal or inspired. i hope to hell rivers finds something that moves him, becuase he's a fantastic songwriter. heres to hoping.

nor have they had a truly amazing album. weezer is fun and all, they're always a band i can have a good time listening to but its really all the same and not very impactful

i agree except that i think Pinkerton was truly amazing. lyrically incredible, and far from just being fun.

again though, i am totally on your side here. mwY deserves far more respect in my book than weezer. but pinkerton was incredible. if rivers didn't get so hurt over people not accepting pinkerton and they didn't wuss the band out, i think they would've been far more amazing. i hate to say it, because i think the term is so overused, but weezer really sold out after pinkerton. they just gave up.

mwY writes the music most people don't like as much anyway, and lack of recognition never stops them.

They try way too hard to be all poetic and deep and serious and all that.

They don't have to try, they just are. Aaron Weiss is the best lyricist in music today. As a band, they are just on another level, with songs about spirituality and faith and religion that do not come off as preachy and obnoxious.

That being said, I feel really strongly about this band; I guess I could see how you think they try too hard though.

But still...

From wikipedia:

In the years since its release, The Blue Album has risen in stature to become one of the most highly-regarded albums of the 1990s, appearing on many "Best-of" lists. In 2003, Rolling Stone named the album among the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."[29] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer_%28The_Blue_Album%29#cite_no te-RS1234-28) In 2002, the readers of Rolling Stone ranked the album the 21st greatest of all time.[30] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer_%28The_Blue_Album%29#cite_no te-RS90s-29) Blender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blender_%28magazine%29)[31] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer_%28The_Blue_Album%29#cite_no te-Blender-30) named the Blue Album among the "500 CDs You Must Own", calling the album "Absolute geek-rock, out and proud." Non-U.S. publications have acclaimed the album as well: New Zealand's The Movement placed it at number 39 on a list of "The 101 Best Albums of the 90s",[32] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer_%28The_Blue_Album%29#cite_no te-31) and Visions of Germany ranked it number 32 on a list of "The Most Important Albums of the 90s."[33] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer_%28The_Blue_Album%29#cite_no te-32)
Reviews of the deluxe edition of the album have also been positive. In 2004, Popmatters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popmatters) gave the album a very positive review and saying "I’d go so far to declare the 'Blue Album' one of the greatest records of the last 20 years." [34] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer_%28The_Blue_Album%29#cite_no te-times-33) Blogcritics Magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blogcritics) gave the album an 10/10 and asserted "this is one of the most important debut albums of the last ten years."[35] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer_%28The_Blue_Album%29#cite_no te-34)

So influence determines a band's greatness?

If I painted a fantastic work of art and hung it in a gallery, i would affect/influence a good amount of people. But if I sat on an overpass shitting on the heads of everyone who walked by, I would affect/influence a SIGNIFICANTLY larger group.

Influence = marketability.
Marketability =/= talent/greatness ... if it did, Kelly Clarkson, Metro Station and Paramore would be the greatest bands alive.

Oh, voted wmY. No competition. Anyone who votes differently has never actually listened to them.

First of all, I have listened to mwY, and I saw them live with Brand New last week. I still prefer Weezer by a mile.

Influence hardly equals marketability. Some of the most influential bands have been commercial busts. My Bloody Valentine nearly went bankrupt recording Loveless and have only sold around 250,000 copies of it in 18 years but that album is considered one of the greatest and most influential of the genre.

And yes, influence is a part of a band's greatness. Why wouldn't it be? I respect artists like Radiohead more because of how much they have influenced the music scene.

You just copy-pasted from their Wikipedia page about the praise the Blue Album got. You didn't give any indication that you had an opinion that you formulated yourself, and you're implying that a record that was highly praised was, for that reason, highly influential on "countless" bands. I could copy-paste the professional review links from mewithoutYou's Brother, Sister Wikipedia page, but what would that prove? It was a highly praised album as well, getting a 90% from this website, but that doesn't mean it any more or any less influential than the Blue Album. The Blue Album also had the advantage of being a pop album released on Geffen records, with wide distrubtion and mainstream attention. mewithoutYou are not "pop" music, per say, and all of their albums have been released on Tooth and Nail. What mewithoutYou have done in their careers and what Weezer did with the Blue Album aren't comparable, no, because they're in two completely different realms. If you ask me, mewithoutYou have been tearing down borders in terms of what Christian rock can be their entire careers, something that's no easy feat in a music scene populated by "praise" bands that all sound the same and Christian metal groups that ALSO all sound the same. Just because you don't like mewithoutYou doesn't mean you can undermine their achievements.

Maybe they could be used through last.fm plays in the AP group? It doesn't have to be an exact calculation, but at least so that, for example, Brand New doesn't face Fall Out Boy in the second round or something like that. Make no mistake, I think this idea and the application is great, but I don't think some of the matchups have worked perfectly.

Sure they have. In the end, we're trying to find AP.net's favorite band. No matter what, if they're the favorite band, they should win every single round. No second, third place.

Sure, but Weezer records have widely influenced most of the better pop-punk/emo bands of today. And depends on who you ask when it comes to favorite Weezer records. I personally believe the only time they've screwed up is on Red and somewhat on Maladroit. Green's a decent record and Make Believe gets far too much criticism. Most people believe Weezer hasn't been good since Blue and Pink because of record sales and how they weren't as good after Pinkerton was made.

Now the time that they've been around comes into play. If mewithoutYou were as old as Weezer and had as many releases, I think it would be a completely different comparison. Weezer has a larger fanbase because of their pop appeal and the sheer amount of time they've been around, not to mention their great albums. I'm not sure how many albums counts as a "string," but mewithoutYou have released three amazing albums back to back. Weezer was named one of the best bands of the 90's in the 2000's, but mewithoutYou have only been around since 2001. I think there are people would argue that mewithoutYou are one of the most innovative and creative bands of the 2000's right now, though. The Blue album is classic, and I'm a big fan of Pinkerton. They've also had some bad albums, but Weezer is classic, and I get why they won.

It all comes down to what you value in music, and what music moves you the most. For me, that's mwY, but I get why Weezer won. Especially on this site, where Blink 182 is beating Radiohead.
