Why do people do this honestly. This is break in number 100,000 or so.

What if it's the same guy?

Stupid question, ignore that.

Look. I think its terrible that people do this, BUT with all of this happening, both bands and labels have to stop feeling bad for themselves and figure out some way to stop it. Personally, I think labels should either provide guards for vans or better van security. Either that or have venues add garages on for vans.

At The Glass House shows, so many bands just park their vans on the street. Easy for anyone to just go up to them and break in.

I think most of these happen at hotels.

Anyway, this is a trend that needs to stop.

Bands really need to start looking after their shit. When I saw The Academy Is...a few months ago one of their trailers was wide open and there was no one even around. This really sucks for them but it's happening way too much now.

It was a real eye-opener after our van got busted into in Chicago mid-tour (lost laptops, cameras, video camera, etc.) We keep this bigger personal stuff on us these days (messenger bags inside venues) when we noticed that little and well hidden things were not taken, but just the bags of stuff. Although it was a rush job (they had broken in and were gone in 5 minutes), we found it pays to take a few minutes to make sure you park somewhere well lit (when possible). At hotels, back the trailer up against walls. Ask venues to keep an eye on the van (or at least the door guy). Sometimes, it's unavoidable, but hopefully some of this could come in handy! Go see these guys and help them out if you can.

So many of you that reply to these situations [probably] have never been on tour.

Given, having your trailer wide opening and no one around (with stuff in it) is just dumb.
But most of these robberies happen the band is sleeping overnight.
And they can't have someone watch over their shit 24-7.

Venues aren't going to add garages - for one, what the fuck does the venue care?
Two - half the time bands usually don't stay close to the venues.

Label hire someone to watch the van for the band? Yeah right.
Take Victory Records for instance - do you realize how much money that would cost...
look at how many bands on their label.

You gotta think resonable options.

I've seen a lot of this stuff happening when bands stay at hotels. I'm not saying don't stay at hotels, but be very careful.
But then again - Houston Calls stayed here in Atlanta in a hotel in a pretty rich white suburban area, and still got their van and trailer stolen last time they were here (not just recently).

A few things I can think of for bands to do:
-Invest in an alarm system for the van and/or trailer.
-Back your van (or trailer) up against a wall, or an area hard to get to.
-I know it's really neat to decorate your trailer with graffiti and stickers, but honestly - that kind of shit pretty much gives away "hey i'm in a band on tour...so i have lots and lots of expensive equipment in here. come steal me".

Those are just a few REASONABLE options I can think of.

And yes by the way, I'm not acting like I'm a know it all.
I'm just thinking reasonable unlike some posts above.

Doesnt cost much for a steering or wheel lock. I love the 'park it against a wall' suggestion. Bands and labels have only themselves to blame now if they get broken into.

i talked to craig and they were in san fransisco staying with some people and he went out to the van at 10:30 in the morning to put something in it and he came back 30 minutes later to check on everything and the back window was knocked out. it doesnt matter if you park against a wall. and i was in one way letter. we were always very safe with parking in good places and keeping a look out on things. it sucks, but please go out and see them and show some support. they are coming back from the west coast now playing show all the way back.

Also for fun of the discussion...

You have to also remember about all the bands that tour all the time
and steal shit from the people they stay with it.

It happens and it's lame too.
I hope those bands get their vans broken into, haha.
