Will a 16 seed ever defeat an 1 seed in the men's NCAA Tournament?

i think its bound to happen sooner or later..there have been a few close calls recently (Uconn against albany and Kansas against holy cross a few years back if i remember correctly)

There have been a couple real close games, #1 Georgetown beat #16 Princeton 50-49 in 1989, #1 Purdue beat #16 Western Carolina 73-71 in 1996, #1 Michigan State beat #16 Murray State 75-71 in OT in 1990, #1 Michigan beat #16 Farleigh Dickinson 59-55 in 1985. There were also a good amount of 1-16 games under 10 points that I saw while looking through old brackets, so I've got to assume it is going to happen some day.

I'll say no simply because of the qualifications of being a 1 seed and a 16 seed. To be a 1 seed, you can't really be playing terribly in the final weeks of the season (as would set you up for a first round exit), or sustain injuries to critical players that cripples your team (Dyson hurts UConn, but, its not like Texas losing Durant, etc). And, to be a 16 seed, you have to come from one of the worst 5 conferences in the NCAA, or, have gotten hot and won your conference tourney despite not being the best team in your bad conference. The latter sets the team up to potentially upset a team...but, in reality, they were a bad team Nov-Feb, and the week+ period many teams wait to play their first game almost always cools them off (see Cuse as a 5 seed after running the BE tourney)

Moral of the story, a team that could upset a 1 seed talent wise usually gets placed as a 14 seed or a 13 seed...and the teams that lack the depth and talent end up at the 16. Its why teams have come close, but, in the end, 40 minutes of physical basketball wears those teams out and allows the 1 seed to win.

I just don't think there will be a scenario where a good mid-major is that under-rated, and one of the top 5 teams in the nation plays that poorly that the combination yields an upset...because even the 2-15 upset has only happened 4 times, and hasn't happened in almost a decade. The reality is that there is a line between mid-major and low-major teams...and the low-majors get the 16 seeds

Yes, eventually it will happen, but I don't see it happening in the near future.

what factors will make the difference between it not happening in the near future compared to in twenty years? you can't put a time table on when it will happen, it'll be a freak thing that happens.

It will happen one of these years with a team catching the number one seed asleep, but at the same time has the worst team in the field ever beat the best in any college tourney that has more than sixteen teams?

I kind of more or less meant that I don't think it will happen this year, but yes it will be a definite freak event whenever it does happen.

LOL,it seems like every time Preppy posts it's like 3 paragraphs, even when everyone else just has a sentence or two, haha.

On the topic at hand, obviously it's going to happen at some point.

It's bound to happen sooner or later and I really hope whatever #16 can trump a #1 can make it all the way, that would be really cool, IMO.
