so for the past 17 years of my life, ive been faced with the terrible condition of lack of chin. its been disapearing for the past few years and my dad defiantley has no chin so there were thoughts that it was genetic. thankfully i am able to afford fixing this problem, but as a positive side is in the near future, i just learned something that really pissed me off. from 5th grade to sophmore year of high school, i had braces. thats 5 years with top and bottom braces. i had pistons in my moth that were suppose to do something but never did, i had a "retainer" for top and bottom that were suppose to keep my teeth straight but when i had it in 5th grade, i like any other 9 year old refused to wear it. the dentist ended up cementing the thing into my mouth. ive had rubber bands and probably some other stuff ive blocked out of my memory. now that ive had braces free teeth for almost 3 full years, my teeth are straight and i have a correct bite. but now is where my lack of chin comes into play. recently i went to see one of the surgeons in CT. this is a non cosmetic surgeon and the first thing he did was look at my teeth. his reaction was a grin and distraught. i got sent to another surgeon who is also non cosmetic but is one that fixes people born with problems or people involved in accidents. turns out that since my dentist was obsessed with straight teeth and a correct bite, my teeth got pushed almost completely off of my jaw. early on there was a chance to fix my jaw and teeth at the same time but now there is problems. i have to meet with someone on thursday where we have to go over two options and see waht is best. the first one is that they will cut the bone and move it forwards, then screw it in place, thus giving me a full, natural chin. no plastic. option 2 is to get braces on my lower teeth, probably to the chin thing, get my teeth back onto my jaw like they should be and then surgically move my jaw forward. it will all be natural and nothing "fake" will be put in, which is a plus, but the thought of having braces again, especially in college just makes me ill.
my original hope was to get something to just fix my chin, go back to college, start fresh with people who dont know me so they wont really notice a difference and live with that. but now i have all these other problems and it seems like a giant mess.
so i have 2 questions
if you knew me in person, for a long time, would you think less of me for doing the surgery. or would you not care since its actually fixing a problem. i shouldnt worry about what others think and my 2 best friends know that im considering this but i jsut wana know peoples thoughts. my other question is how gay are braces in college. my opinion is super gay.
and if you're wondering why my dad dosent have a chin, its cause he never had braces and his doctor said that he would grow into his face. im slowing becoming my father. sorry about hte long thing but im pissed

It's cool man, my one friend has no neck really and nobody really gives a crap. This other kid's ears stick out like fucking crazy, he got them pinned back, nobody really said shit. If anybody thinks less of you after knowing you for a long time, they are douchebags. It's your shit, so you should be able to do what you want with it, not have to worry about losing friends on something like that. Good luck dude.

The braces are only on the bottom so they wouldn't look so bad. Either way, I wouldn't think less of you for doing either. I mean does it really change who you are? Hell no. You're still gonna take those fantastic band photos right? See so just do whatever will work best for you. Sorry you have to go through that. It sounds awful.

wow, that hella sucks. usually orthodontists are really into taking care of things like that asap.
anyhow, a friend of mine had jaw surgery a little over a year ago, & it wasn't a big deal to me. i can hardly tell the difference, but it was important to her to have it done. as for the braces part, it's probably not ideal, but it's a small price to pay. besides, after a while people tend to forget you had braces in the first place.
good luck with whatever procedure you decide on. i sure hope you like ensure!
I don't think the braces would be a big deal because they would be on the bottom, Good luck with whatever decision you make. Just do what will make you the most happy and if they are your true friends then they will be happy for you as well. Don't worry about people thinking less of you because you are trying to fix something that is not ideal for you. Now if you were getting calf implants like that guy on MTV then there would be some giggles.

I wouldn't care if you had less or no chin. It shouldn't matter at all. You should acctually go after the dentist for being a freak and sue that bastard for damages IMO.

you have no chin? I have about like...one chin that's triple the size of normal...plus it sticks out like ten miles (I have a crazy underbite...I look like a bulldog of sorts)...It's really unnattractive and according to my gf, many people are intimidated by it...but to fix it I'd need reconstructive jaw surgery which is just a bit much to fix my "looks"...but ya, most shouldn't care.

I'd go back and beat the hell out of that dentist. When I was a little kid the one dentist I originally went to start scamming my family for shit and saying we all needed this dental work and stupid shit like that. He said I need to wear a headbrace to fix my overbite til I'm 21. We went and got a second opinion at an orthodotist and he said a headbrace wouldn't be necessary. So instead I got braces for like less than a year. My old dentist ended up getting in some shit and now is in jail for some kind of fraud. In answer to question I wouldn't honestly care as long as it made you happy as my friend I would be there to support ya.

Well you should consult a malpractice lawyer about the dentist. Worst case is he will say there is no case and you can proceed, best case you can settle with the dentist's insurance company to cover the costs of the work that is now necessary to correct what he did, and probably get some pain and suffering too. (I am in law school, so I am not just blowing smoke up your ass here)
And as far as the surgery, do what will make you happy. If it means people may think less of you for a few years, fuck them. You have a long life ahead of you, and if you think this will help your self image and confidence, in the sense that you will be able to be more outgoing and lead a happier, healthier, more successful life, do it. Its worth the sacrifice.
And if you are worried about the braces thing in college, don't. Girls are whores, and you wont have any problems getting any due to a little metal.

i think that if your friends were true to you they wouldn't even think of giving you shit for having a necessary surgery...plus braces aren't a big deal...i have a friend of my family who's almost 50 that got braces [they're the clear kind but w/e] and it's just whatever with us...
it seems to me that the second surgery seems harder? i don't know...
my family was going to a dentist back in the day...i think i was like six years old and he was determined to put braces on me and my brother [he was probably eight]...he always screwed up a crown my mom had? i'm not sure...but my mom bounced us outta there and he ended up getting charged with fraud and other stuff by other people

Im so surprised no one has made the amazing disapearing chin joke.
I definitely wouldnt think less of a friend if they had surgery like that done. In fact last year, a friend of mine had a similiar problem where they had to break his jaw and realign it or something like that. It turned out fine and no one thought the less of him. He was a lot younger than you though, he was a freshman at the time. Your orthodontist sounds like he was a shitbag.

Lower braces are almost impossible to see. And i would never make fun of someone for a surgery because of the way they felt. As long as your not doing it for someone else.
