View Full Version : Is Stephen Colbert more a conservative or a liberal?

I need some help here regarding Stephen Colbert. The other day, it was brought to my attention that a lot of people seem to think that Stephen Colbert's political stance is heavily skewed to the left and this is something that never even crossed my mind before. I always thought that he was on the more moderate-to-conservative side; you know, a nice parrallel to what Jon Stewart brings to the table. However, somebody I know claimed that he thinks that Colbert is probably even more liberal than Stewart. Maybe I'm just dense or I don't pay enough attention to his satire, but I can't seem to decide on this issue.
So disregarding your own political stances, would you consider Stephen Colbert a conservative or a liberal? Keep in mind that this is not an opinion poll and I am not asking what you want him to be.
Thank you.

I don't know how you can have watched his show for an extensive period of time and not realized he's playing a character. He's mocking conservatives, or at least how they are typically perceived. That's the humor.

Stephen Colbert, as a human, not as a character, is more liberal.

yeah, i never really watched the show all that much. i just used to catch a few segments every once in awhile and thought i had a conservative news show on comedy central to counter jon stewart, but i guess the joke's on me. oh well, back to boring old fox news.

I need some help here regarding this OP. It was brought to my attention that a lot of people have long ago realized that Stephen Colbert's political stance has always been an act, yet that somebody could believe his act to be the real thing has never even crossed my mind before. I always thought that even people on the more moderate-to-conservative side could realize this; you know, considering they can't all be senseless. However, that the OP thinks that Colbert is being himself as much as Stewart is himself, boggles my mind. Maybe I'm just dense or I don't pay enough attention to the true nature of people, but I have to say this truly makes me want to disregard all previous beliefs I'd once held regarding how ignorant people can be.
So disregarding your own sensible stances, would you consider OP a retard or a brain dead? Keep in mind that this is not an opinion poll and I am not asking what you want him to be.
Thank you.

Listen. Your post is all over the place so I'll try to respond to what I think you're saying
First off, I apologize for the fact that I was unaware of Stephen Colbert's act. I don't watch a whole lot of comedy central but latey I've had the chance to view The Daily Show and the Colbert Report. Without any background information about the shows, I assumed that TDS had a liberal viewpoint and TCR had a more conservative viewpoint. On its face, can you see how someone unfamiliar with these shows could make this mistake?
Secondly, I assume you identify with liberals due to the little stab you took at "moderate-to-conservatives." The difference between you and me is that I don't insult people due to their political beliefs. Your blanket statements are simply put, childish and help absolutely nobody. Oh, and when I say "you" I mean you personally, not liberals in general. You are the ignorant one.
So you're able to gather all of the information you need about my "true nature" based on a few posts on AP.net? Please...
Finally, all I can say is at least you didn't stoop to the lowly depths of those terrible conservatives when you used words like "retard" and "brain dead" to describe someone asking for help who had an honest question and who is unfamiliar with a certain topic. I'm not one of those people who believes that 16 year olds have nothing useful to offer to a discussion, but you're certainly not helping your age group's cause with posts like that.

Satire isn't one of those things you need to watch and watch a show religiously to "get". How you can watch even 5 minutes of his show and not recognize that it is dripping in it is mind boggling.
Also, as someone with access to a computer, you've never consulted wikipedia or google? Have you lived under a rock? I can go on and on, but really, as a "moderate to conservative", you're the reason people like Sarah Palin are household names.

you're right, i should have consulted wikipedia rather than godamn ap.net. and i never said i was moderate to conservative, that's what i thought the colbert report was before the almighty left alerted me of my ignorance. i'm far right, a conservative. and i'm losing my temper because you liberals ALWAYS think it's us-vs-them on every godamn topic no matter what it is (yeah, i am lumping you all together now and making a blanket statement because it's fitting in this situation. i never claimed to be above hipocrisy, unlike you people). i took no stance whatsoever at first and had a simple question. and what do people like you do? you insult me for not "getting" satire and "living under a rock."
and what does it even mean that i'm the reason people like sarah palin are household names? for a second let's even ignore the fact that she was a vice presidential candidate... she was all over the media, everywhere, (have you been living under a rock) and i think tina fey may have had a bigger hand in making her a household name than i did.
ahhh forget this forum and all of its pompous know-it-alls (myself included), i'm going to watch march madness
Um, it depends on the issue. I actually think Colbert is more conservative than a lot of people realize on some issues. He really is catholic, and likely supports some of their conservative policies (like abortion and birth control). As a person, he self-identifies as a democrat, but doesn't really go into more detail than that. His race stuff is brilliant in mocking the tolerance culture we're simmering in, but that's both sides. However, he is both more and less liberal than Stewart. He's certainly not a conservative overall, but I think he does have some sympathy for certain points of view, he satirizes it too effectively to not understand where they're coming from as well.
All he is really trying to do is play an authority figure in a position of power without the knowledge to back it up - that can mock either democrat or republican, it just so happens he based it off of O'reilly, and the current climate seems to support people like that being republicans.

The character Stephen Colbert plays on his show is a conservative, but it is a parody. I don't know how an actual conservative would be able to poke fun of the conservative ways in good fun and humor when they really do agree with it all... That's just how I see it.

Stephen Colbert is my favourite POLITICIAN. It completely matters which political views he holds so I can vote for him.
Really though, who needs a parody when you can listen to Rush Limbaugh? He's a fat loser, and not necessarily conservative, but more along the lines of insane and fascist.

Of course not, but maybe next time the OP has a question like this they'll do a google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=is+steven+colbert+a+libera l&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) instead of make a thread about it.
He probably just wanted to have a discussion about the topic. Bad judgement is no reason to be given the shit this guy's getting.

I agree, it'll save him the trouble in the future though. There really isn't even much discussion to be had, it's a fact that he's a registered democrat and just about everything you can read about the show says it's political satire.

I agree with this guy to an extent. There seems to be a lynch mob mentality on this board. On many boards all over the internet, actually. People just gang up on someone entirely, totally being inconsiderate of their feelings.
But whatevs. Freedom of speech. Do you things. Live your lives. I myself am beginning to learn to ignore all the negative energy and animosity perpetuated on the internet, however. All the sarcasm and jabs and up their asses 'higher than thou' attitudes. Bobcat, I insist that you try and do as I do and ignore all of these bad feelings coming towards you. You stated your case and they did not give you the benefit of the doubt. Not much for you to do but brush your shoulders off and go on with life. The thing is that YOU know what your intentions were, so there's no need to constantly explain yourself to this brats and misfits.

He's more democrat, sarcastically playing a hardcore republican. Very well, I might add.
I'm not to huge on politics and I don't even consider myself to be very educated about them but here's my stance. He's a democrat but does take a conservative side on certain issues and topics. He realizes that both parties have major flaws and points out/makes fun of them on each, just him being a little more biased becuase of his deomcratic stance he pokes more fun at the conservative party on his show.
