I've posted some photos from The Rocket Summer (http://www.therocketsummer.com) show last night in Oakland. I have to apologize in advance, I just started using this camera so hopefully the photos will get better in the coming months. On that note - if anyone has some tips with a camera like the Canon 20D, I'm all ears.

what was your aperature and shutter speed and iso? and do u have an external flash? i dont kno much about canons since im a nikon user but the 20D cant be that much different than a d70 or a eos300d the lighting looks like it sucked, i have a very hard time with venues that have like one red light and one blue light haha

the lighting was pretty bad.. I set the ISO pretty low and used the flash (I hate flash but it was pretty much my only option) sometimes I didn't use flash and set the ISO high and took profie photos of him where the you could see the lights also. I set the shutter speed between 50 and 125, I was going back and forth.

Yep, guitar, keyboards and drums. Easily one of the best shows ever. I've seen him twice now and there is never a dull moment when he's playing, and he sounds damn good live.

if you can, try using a 2.8 f stop with a shutter around 4-15 and a 200 iso when there is good lighting. i dont know waht to say about bad lighting cause i suck with bad lighting (see my saosin photoso n myspace). the treos/cartel photos on my site came out pretty good and it was my first time with the 2.8f/200iso

Aww, looking at those made me sad I missed him on Monday. I had just mailed away all my money for car insurance and a parking ticket (apparently you can't leave your car parked in the same place for more than 72 hours). I was hugely impressed with his show that I saw in the summer and had been looking forward to seeing him with a smaller crowd.

I shoot on a 20d, have had it for about a year, and before that a 10d. You just need to play around with it. You can really utilise the high ISO's on it if you get familiar with shooting with them. You won't need to flash and will eventually not lose all your colours once you optimize your settings. It just takes time and familiarity with all the custom settings, and definitely use your custom white balances on there and get familiar with saving different settings. Great camera though, and canon has some great lenses.

if he dropped his shutter speed down that much, the photos would all be blurry. also, i guess it works in this case, but to get an f2.8 you have to be really close/wide angle. it works here, but any farther away and you would have had to stop down. also the DOF would be really small with f2.8.
i would just bump your iso up a lot and deal with the noise...
these pics came out pretty well, although yeah having to use the flash does suck

digital cameras are fun to take pictures with. i just got a nikon d50 awhile ago. try using different settings. the night time setting takes some pretty good pictures with awesome light effects. landscape setting can do something to the same effect sorta. i recommend getting acquainted to the rear curtain sync setting aka slow rear in the manual flash settings. its fun.

Pretty good pics! I have a Canon 20D as well. For low-light shows, I bump my ISO up to 800 and shoot manual. I open up my aperture usually to f/2.5-2.8 and shoot anywhere from 1/60 - 1/180 shutter speed. What kind of lens are you using? If you don't already have one, I'd suggest a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. You can get one anywhere from $70-80, and it's perfect for shooting shows because it's really fast.
A couple of examples of my concert photos all at 800 ISO - and no noise!

Best advice I can think of is take a look at some flickr profiles, look at the exif data on shots you like. Live shit is hard because every venue has different lighting so settings for one venue will not work in another venue.
your photos look pretty damn good though.

Hey do you have any suggestions about a club that is well lit, but allows no flash? I've got a Nikon D70 and am shooting The All American Rejects/TAI next week and AAR's people are not letting me use flash because it "distracts the band".

theres no such thing as a well lit place indoors other than a controlled studio. always assume there wont be enough light. pretty much all you can do is push the iso up to atleast 800, get your f-stop as low as you can and find the slowest shutter speed you can go to.
