View Full Version : Project Idea for the Musicians of AP....

I was thinking about how the band The Sounds of Animals Fighting just have different musicians record different parts of a song separately and then send it in to the other members of the project and then they put it all together to make a really atmospheric, layered track.
So what I was wondering is if we could organize something like this here through the AP musician forum, just have people upload their part of a song and then people working around it and posting their bit until it was an actual coherent piece of music. I don't know specifics of it or anything, but it was just an idea that came to me and decided to share it amongst you all and see what you thought.

Sure, why not? I'd try it. Vocals, acoustic guitars, and more simple piano/keyboards would be all I'm comfortable recording for it though.

That's cool man, if you ever get some you can put stuff up here then. But really, all you need is a microphone and a computer. Just download Audacity for free, hook up a mic through your computer, and then whatever you can record with that would be sufficient, ya know?

haha, thanks bro, if you've got any ideas for a song or whatever just put it up here.

Yeah, I'd probably just record vocals, acoustic guitars, maybe a little bass or electric riffs, and I can do some pretty heavy melody stuff for keyboards.

But I don't have access to a piano. I have to figure out the whole mic settings on my computer because anytime I record, it sounds all static and what not.

Well if you record something and it sounds like shite (sound-quality wise, not talent-wise) then I can just edit it and level it out, or somebody else can too.
I would love to do vocals, and mix the entire thing.

right... it's not so much that... i've got 5 drum mics and some overheads and stuff, i just have no real way of getting them into my software... my soundcard i bought has only 2 mic inputs and i've got no mixer or anything.
maybe i'll just try getting a decent room sound with one mic and then mic near the bass and snare to give it more character then work on eq, compression and whatnot.

And even if I was doing that, it'd be more worthwhile than talking about touring, press, and releasing EPs before even writing half of a song. How are they 'ideas'? If you're thinking about things like that now then you have it COMPLETELY the wrong way around. I don't know if you've ever been in a band before, but writing music usually comes before press?

I'm going to go with what SeeYouSeptember said. I really don't see why people are dropping out of something that isn't even that tangible, and it's really just something I thought would be cool to work on with other musicians as a way of expanding the musical experience of people involved, and it seems like overnight you've all flipped out and gone at each other's necks like fucking idiots. To people who were talking about this being huge and getting sponsorships, that's not what it's about, and I wouldn't want to be involved with any of that anyways seeing as how it's practically impossible. It's just an exercise in creative expression, and to lew, I'd hate to see you go considering you were helping out with the whole musical process with our one "idea", and if you don't want to deal with people making shitty music then you can just work privately through other people's emails. TooShort, whatever you can do to be productive would be great. And to miccore, just try to be productive with this if you're going to do anything at all.

I don't think I have been an idiot whatsoever. Yeah, I probably overreacted, but only because I am serious about music and stand up for what I believe when it comes to creating it. You are right though, it is practically impossible - which is what I was trying to say, I suppose.

For now I'd like to carry this on through PMs if that's OK. I don't want to get too involved at this stage, but I'm still willing to hear ideas and see what happens with them. So if SeeYouSeptember wants to send me those files, then I'll see what I can do.
Sorry to make this all serious suddenly, but as I said I stand up for what I believe music is about.
We all stand up for what we believe music is really about. But some people's opinions on it differs from others. Those bro-core guys up there are in it for the fame, but I don't believe fame brings joy, I believe joy comes from the time spent making music that I love.
Also, gonna need the email, it's easier to send files that way then use rapidshare or megaupload.
Edit: Maybe PM is a better idea.

I totally agree with you man, and I wasn't necessarily calling you an idiot, just the people that were throwing around random insults. I get what you mean though

A) I AM NOT in music for the fame, I am passionate as hell about music, but I am also the kind of person who will push whatever I am involved with as far as I can. Music is my life, whether performing or recording, i dont care how big my name gets as long as I live my life with music in my heart and on my mind. Can a person not bring up a random, more than likely futile idea just for the sake of it.
B) Because my current band plays bro-core, does not mean i was going to even remotely try to involve that in this idea....my apologies if thats how i made it seem. Quite frankly, my favorite bands of all-time include The Get Up Kids, Say Anything, Thrice, The Early November and The Honorary Title...and especially TSOAF, which is what drew me to this...these are also my main writing influences for when im not working with my band....I've been dying to find some people with whom I could share some of the ideas and maybe try to make something happen.
But its whatever, if you guys are so closed minded that you cant look at moderate humor no matter how poorly worded, then i have no desire to try to involve myself with this idea.
Cred isnt based off of what kind of music you play, its how hard you work...and I really dont feel like i need cred from the people who have shunned any idea tossed out (whether as a joke or not) so quickly.
Good luck with the project, it IS a brilliant idea, its just too bad so many people cant open their eyes and minds up enough to see past something this dumb.

we just need to take this one step at a time, and definitely get more organized. Maybe open up a actual site/forum for all of us to join and discuss it on there. That way we can be more organized and stuff.

Erm, proabably the wrong time to contribute here, but I'd be really up for helping out as well. I play guitar and bass, and I could help out with the arrangement. Cheers.

Very cool idea. I could kick an Ondes Martenot part if you want, I also do lo-fi guitar recordings if you;re interested.
When I get my recording equipment working, I can do guitar/vocals/ukulele. The last one isn't really relevant, but I thought I'd add it in there anyway.

Okay while I see this as an amazing idea and would love to do what I can it it, I think we need to establish a few things before we put anything together. These things should be...
1. A solid chord progression/key that it will follow. We need to all be on the same page as far as that if we are going to layer anything.
2. A basic structural template, i.e. intro, verse, chorus, bridge, crescendo, outro, prechoruses, what not. This isn't so essential, but you should get what I mean.
3. For the most part, a general tempo applying to the structure, once again, for layering purposes.
I don't think we should focus on a distinct sound for this, because we all have different preferences, and blending those is what will make this amazing. For example, I like psychedelic, hardcore punk, noise rock, lo-fi, shoegazing, and folk. Some guys on here like pop-punk, emo, metal, and whatever. Maybe an epic psychedelic-pop-punk-shoegazing-emo-noise rock-punk epic will be the best thing ever made. Lets not put expressive and creative limits to this.
And for any haters as to this idea, fuck off. Music has no limits. Music has no rules. Music has no guide lines. Thats what makes it music.
Music is art, not science.
Anyways, I play guitar and bass proficiently, I can work the keyboard and the Ondes Martenot, and I am getting a 1960's Wurlitzer 200A sometimes this week or next and would love to utilize it.
Anyone and everyone, let me know whats up.

Whoa, you own an Ondes Martenot. How much did it cost you? Where'd you get it? Please and thank you.

Haha, well actually its the French Connection Analog System. Its a synthesizer that replicates the function and sound of the Ondes, with the slide ring and control panel and all. It sounds almost exactly like the real thing, which I have played; a guy I like in Madison has a real one. I got mine luckly of Craigs List for $900, but maket price for one is about $1500. They're relatively hard to find, but if you want one I suggest in the most to get one. Its the same thing Jonny Greenwood brings on tour. Great stuff.

Man, that's ill. I've actually checked out the Analogue Systems website before. Those things look sooo sweet, but I've never played one. Being a huge fan of Radiohead and Jonny Greenwood, I've always wanted to put my hands on one. "Where I End And You Begin" is one of my all time favorite songs.
I just bought a new guitar recently, so I don't have that kind of scratch laying around, but maybe someday. :-)
Great job snatching one used. You hit the CL jackpot.

So, what's the status of this whole project right now? Is there a song being passed around? Gotta get my hands on a file of whatever we're workin on, I'm in.
