View Full Version : Green Day To Take Time Writing Follow-up

The following story is taken from NME.com (www.nme.com): Green Day (www.greenday.com) have revealed that they will be 'taking their time' writing the follow-up to the hugely successful 'American Idiot'.

The band are also still looking at a full length movie version of their seventh LP, and have said that they will not be rushing into making the follow-up.

"We're gonna take our time," singer Billie Joe Armstrong said. "We'll probably start writing after the first of the year and then just regroup. We've gotta take our time - this year was such a big year for us. I think it's a good time to regroup and have good substance to write about instead of hopping into something really fast."

Despite talks of an 'American Idiot' film, the band say that they are unlikely to be appearing in the flick themselves.

"We're gonna make a movie going along the story of 'American Idiot'," drummer Tre Cool told Xfm. "A rock opera. We need to go home, put some thought into it, talk to directors and writers and get the script together, stuff like that. I don't think that I'm going to have to (be in the film), because we're making the movie and I wouldn't do that to myself."

Armstrong added: "I'm not an actor at all. I'd rather be behind the writing and the production, and leave the acting to the actors."
Bassist Mike Dirnt has also explained how Green Day dealt with the initial criticism after breaking out of the Californian underground scene to a worldwide fanbase.

He said: "We were so busy concentrating on living our lives and touring and working and growing into who we are as a band. You've gotta put the blinders on sometimes and go forward and say 'To hell with what anyone says'. You've just got to move forward and I think, at the end of the day, I'm glad we're here."

Green Day's new single 'Jesus Of Suburbia' is set to be released next Monday (November 14)

Yeah because all good music is accompanied by a motion picture, Monday Night Football performance, and your own line of wristbands??

Green Day has become a product and its sad ..because there whole anti-government/war message loses a lot of meaning by their actions. Green Day didnt just get "noticed" ..that happened about 10 years ago... now they've become basically an enterprise. They write good music ..and thats about the only thing that seperates them from the Backstreet Boys or Lindsay Lohan now.

i'm happy for green day, no matter what people say. i just don't know about the whole movie thing tho, maybe that's taking it a little too far. just play music, you're musicians, not hollywood directors

They write good music
And that's all it takes for me to like a band. I care about the music. Not whether or not they've sold out. If they want to do this I say go for it. Green Day are fine musicians and as musicians they are artists. For an artist to expand and work on other forms of art, such as film, is acceptable as far as I'm concerned, as long as they continue to use talent. If they just shit out a series of terrible films for money this would change my view of them. However, for them to expand their horizons and try something new after 15 years of playing music is reasonable.

I'd love to see the movie, so we can sort of see what went on in their minds while writing the album.

And continuing the debate. I've liked greenday since the kerplunk album. And does all this hype about them piss me off?

No

In fact, I'm glad a band i support HAVE gotten the exposure and ARE played regularly on mainstream music channels.

Same thing with with MCR.

Be happy for your bands ppl, you are'nt cool enough to stop other mainstream lovers enjoying their music too

elitists are fucking lame. seriously folks, get the fuck over it. for the majority of you that post on here, green day were making music before you were born. respect your fucking elders. if it wasnt for green day, there would be no taking back sunday, fall out boy, or my chemical romance for you to praise or despise.

ANYWAY,

music is art.

film is art.

therefore, musicians are artists. for an artist of any kind or calibur to progress, evolve, move forward with their craft within or outside of their art form and still love what they're doing, is something that a fellow artist like myself WILL RESPECT.

green day has not "sold out". they have always done whatever the fuck they want to do in their 15+ year career. they WANTED to write time of your life. they WANTED to write Warning(whether you elitists like the record or not.) they WANTED to push themselves to write an hour long record. and now they WANT to expand a great story and make it into a film. and as long as they continue to put out the music they WANT to put out(no matter how long it takes them) they should be commended.

Good, im glad they've decided to take their time with the follow up. I was just wondering the other day how they were going to follow up this record. The only way I can see them continuing this "streak" of sorts is to work along the lines of Dookie. Does anyone feel the same way?

i think that ultimately, these guys are fuckin artists, and they are amazing! Make a movie, you already make music, whats the big difference. If they have an oppurtunity to do so, good for them. You cant tell me that if your best friend, family member or even yourself for that matter loved doing something, and someone backed you, that you wouldnt take it, or support your friend or family member to do so as well. If you said no, id watch my chance go down the train, your an idiot. As long as your not jeapordizing who you are, your morals, and your not fuckin people over, its all about what life is about. Carpe Diem. I fuckin love Green Day...period

im pretty sure most bands dont like making the amount of money they do. staying true to your message/music/whatever is important, but lets face it, tons of bands wanna get paid.

So they want to wear eyeliner? Damn, I think I might have actually respected them more if they were just doing it to appeal to the MCR fans...Oh well..

you are an idiot for even bringing fashion into this. this is one of the most redundant points brought up, and is by no means a good argument.

They're going to take their time on this album?!? How freakin long did it take them to put out American Idiot?!
I think the only way the movie would work is if it was animation and staright to DVD...
...I always assumed that the 'Jesus of suburbia' would be an animation, keeping in context and theme with the song.
Instead it just look like a roadie for rancid walking around, wasted for 9 minutes

I find it hard to believe that you are 19 and have liked Green Day since Kerplunk...I was 11 when Dookie came out, which means you were 8...so when Kerplunk came out you were like what 6 or 7?

But I do agree with your post...be happy when bands you respect get what they worked for and deserve...I would be happy if someone from here got rich.

It's weird to me, when I see such dislike for Greed Day on this site. They've opened doors for bands, and generally make really good music. Some people on here don't like their stuff, but will jump up and down for a Kelly Clarkson song, or get super defensive of a band like Fall Out Boy...it's bizarre. I feel like Green Day write and perform better music then both these bands, and most of the bands currently "punk".

*edit* oops, Kelly Clarkson isn't a band, she's just a collection of SUCK.

Well for everyone who is pissed at them for making it big, by chance are you also anti-Blink182 now? Let's admit it we used to worship these bands, many of us still do. I totally agree that we should be HAPPY for our bands. Hell, if any of the underground bands I listen to made it big I'd be extremely appreciative. We all grew up with these 2 bands so why do you need to go "anti-mainstream"? I think that bothers me more than "posers". At least for the most part "posers" know about the kind of music their bands are playing and support them, even if for a short period of time. you rarely see posers walking around talking shit about their past band favs. Travis Barker cut a deal with MTV for a show, do you all hate him now? Him being the best drummer probably to ever come to this generation of music? I'm not such a huge fan of the war lyrics, I feel like it's over used honestly. However, I still support them full out. I mean come on guys think back on 5th grade and before, cause you KNOW you all sported your Greenday and Blink t-shirts like they were the hottest things to ever hit stands. So stop being so anti-mainstream. If you like them than keep supporting them, if you turn against them than shut your mouth? It's not like they really care what kind of negative things you have to say anyway, theyr'e richer than we'll ever be. Also, millions of people listen to THEIR opinions, not you anti-corporation people. EVERYTHING is a corporation. So are you anti-economy too?

green day's amazing and they should do extra things, i could see if they didnt play their own music write it or write their own lyrics they shouldnt deserve respect but they do all of that stuff by themselves and comparing them to someone like lindsay lohan who doesnt play her own music write it and doesnt even have a voice is just really stupid. congrats to them, can't wait for the movie!
