The adaption will be more faithful towards the novel instead of the 1969 film. I've never read/seen either, but I'm excited to see what the Coens can do with a Western.

For reals? Hmm, usual hesitance to remake is overpowered by Coen brothers majesty of the screen.
No Country was Western-esque, I'm confident the Coen Brothers can do it.

While I agree that his performance will most likely be Oscar worthy, and probably will get a nom, but do you think they would really give him the award for the second year in a row for playing a part that somebody else has already won an Oscar for?

It was a pretty great trailer. It displayed a lot more of the comedic aspects of the film that embodied the original. The teaser was more effective to me, though.

It also made it feel like a wholey different film. The teaser seems targeted toward the No Country For Old Men audience, while the trailer feels much more broad. But it's all in marketing. Either way, both trailers have sold the film to me.

DickfaceChillah
11/22/10, 04:23 PM
I don't see how the word FUCK would work it's way into a film like this. A PG-13 is also more of a heavy rating than it used to be as well. The MPAA is very lenient on violence in PG-13 rated films these days. True Grit is not a film that revolves around it's violence anyhow. I think extreme and cold violence like that in No Country For Old Men would cheapen this film.
Also, a PG-13 BENEFITS this film. It has a strong young female lead that many young audience members will be able to look up to. If this movie earned an R, I think half the audience would've fell by the wayside. This will help the movie not only financially, but I also think that having a bigger audience will open up younger crowds to the Coen brothers films.
deadkidsean
11/22/10, 04:28 PM
Exactly. It is a dialogue-heavy, character-driven film about justice in the old west, not Un-fucking-forgiven. It's about innocence. Hell, the original was rated G.
DickfaceChillah
11/22/10, 04:31 PM
I don't think a lot of modern audiences connect to old westerns like True Grit as they do to, say, a 3:10 To Yuma remake or an Unforgiven, or The Proposition. And I understand that, but there's been enough wonderful, gritty and nihilistic Westerns in the past few years. True Grit is a parable. True Grit is not simply a shoot 'em up Western. I'm relieved it isn't an uncompromisingly violent Coen brothers picture.
deadkidsean

Yeah. Modern audiences are dense. That's pretty much what it comes down to.

To appease Sean, I know nothing about the original or Westerns in general, but I do kind of with this had an R rating simply because I was hoping for it not to be a shot for shot remake. Figured they'd Coen it up a little, add some healthy doses of philosophy and oddball shit like they usually incorporate.
I personally like films, especially if they're dark like the trailer for this one pointed to, to be uncompromising and uncomfortable, but I have faith in the Coens and love O Brother so I have no doubts this will rule.

.
Yea the trailer was really misleading. It made it seem like it would be much heavier than it really was (the kidnapping scene in the trailer which you think would be this huge event and really propel the movie was just a blip in the film)
the whole film was about the relationship between Damon Bridges and the girl and their bantering. If you arent a fan of westerns than you wont be a fan of this film. I was pretty amused with it all but at the same time wasnt blown away. I wont watch it again kinda feeling. Yea i saw it but would i recommend someone to go out and spend 10 bucks on it. I doubt it
i was glad it was free

Yeah, the commercials for it make it seem something closer to No Country For Old Men than O Brother. It's actually a pretty good mix of those 2.

And man, it was one of the most violent PG-13 films I've seen in terms of blood. I never, ever thought they'd be able to show point-blank gunshot to the face WITH blood splatter. And Hell, that one cat got his fingers straight chopped off. That really surprised me.
And man, I loved Bridges' last shot. Fires his revolver, drops to his knees, complains about his age one last time, haha.

I'd rank it right up there in a tie with Inception and The Social Network for favorite of 2010.

Pepper was great, still gotta give the nod to Bridges, though. And the young girl deserves major props. It's rare for me not to groan at a child actor's performance but she was perfect -- didn't think I was watching anything but how that character would be once.

For example, when she was on the roof they were like, "She's going to fall. Yeah." Of course she didn't and they look like morons. It's a very good movie, but not an excellent one. It's visually incredible and the performances (especially the three main characters) are excellent. With that said, I was disappointed by the choice to frame the movie with Mattie grown up. While many have criticized the epilogue, I was actually more put off by what this choice did to the beginning. One, it takes away a lot of the tension to know that she lives through the ordeal, and two, the dramatic impact of her father's death is almost nonexistent. The epilogue similarly lacks punch, although I found it slightly more satisfying than the film's opening.
I genuinely did like the film, but it just kind of felt like something was missing for much of it. Aside from two virtually perfect scenes (first, where Mattie rides the horse across the river when she is denied help, and second, the cabin shooting) I never felt like the movie truly capitalized on its full potential. For a film that had little reason not to be unabashedly epic (and probably would have benefited from a lack of restraint), some crucial moments felt slightly subdued (particularly Chaney's final scene). Overall, I'd definitely recommend it and might even see it again before it leaves theaters, but it wasn't the knockout best film of the year that I (perhaps unreasonably) expected.
Colorblind!
12/23/10, 09:58 AM
I know nothing of the originals or Westerns in general, so all of this was new to me.
I was enthralled the entire movie, not a single bad performance, some absurdly funny stuff like the man in the bear skin and the guy in Ned's crew making all the animal noises and fantastic dialogue. It stands for me as one of the best movies of the year, but I still come away slightly let down.
NCFOM and A Serious Man are two of my favorite films and all have so much going on, be it symbolism or philosophical interjections, and this (unless I'm missing something) was felt like entertainment and never really went into anything substantial. While I think that's completely valid, just in light of their two past films which I've watched and re-watched and discussed for hours I don't think this is as powerful.
Still, adored it.

Annoying how the main character isn't on movie posters or in the end credits as the main star. In all honesty though, she bugged the shit out of me the whole movie... I swear she had the same look on her face throughout. Score was cheesy as well.
