Here is my review for Relient K's Apathetic EP:

Relient K – Apathetic EP
Capitol Records
{SCORE: 6.9/10}

Relient K’s last release, MmmHmm, was somewhat of a gem in my eyes. Not the record that changes the way you think about music or that revolutionizes a genre, but a diamond in the rough by way of quality and scope. We’ve all heard power chords and pianos mesh before to make the drippiest pop-punk possible, but there was something about the way Relient K pulled it off that boasted dignity and elegance. The K boys showcased a boatload of heart, predominantly on the sleeve, and that certain passionate spark that this band has flaunted from day one. The guitar riffs were crisp and convicting and the piano parts composed masterfully and bursting with passive emotion. Religious affiliation or not, MmmHmm is easily one of the best pop-punk albums released in the past few years, and Relient K are easily one of the current champions of the genre. Their last release left fans with only one desire… MORE! Fans demand – band answers: Apathetic EP.

A portion of this hefty little package contains a handful of songs that, while new, don’t stray more than an inch from the material on MmmHmm. The song style and recording nuance are identical, so I’m tempted to refer to them as b-sides but I don’t want to indicate any lack of quality. The new tunes are essentially on par with those on the last release. I’m certainly glad to hear more material along these same lines, but I do hope that Relient K make an attempt to alter their sound in some way before we see the likes of a new full length. “Over Thinking” and “The Thief” are both breathtaking, and reaffirm the notion that Relient K have a knack for balladry, and are savvy in soothing.

The Apathetic EP also offers an acoustic take on two of MmmHmm’s highlight tracks; the popular single “Be My Escape” and my personal favorite “Which to Bury, Us or the Hatchet.” Like most of that album these songs were originally pulsing with energy and uptempo rhythm and they suffer here without that edge. It’s definitely a treat to hear them in a different format, and “Be My Escape” works quite well, however, “Which to Bury, Us or the Hatchet” might be the most passionately intense track from that album and frankly, it just loses its resonance in this softer shade. The bridge is supposed to explode and here it dwindles, also, where is the piano outro? Bottom line: it sounds decent, but would get its ass kicked by the original.

Relient K must have 6-8 Christmas songs to their name already, including an exclusive Christmas EP but they’ve charmed us once more with their most heartfelt ode to the holiday season yet. If you’re as much a sucker for these babies as I, then know that this Christmas song is among the best for the genre, especially being an original composition rather than a cover. Despite the depressing direction it will fill your heart with feeling and yuletide spirit, even if that means crying next to the Christmas Tree. (Go Jews!)

There is no apathy here. Relient K are still making songs with as much care and emotion as ever, and this EP is worth your money. Hopefully it serves as a stepping stone to a more developed future full length that will outdo any Relient release of the past. Fans of Relient K shouldn’t have a second thought about making this purchase. And if you’re not a fan, reconsider MmmHmm and if/when you do fall in love, the Apathetic EP will be waiting to satiate your craving.

Haha, RoKo...that's what everyone should call him!
And actually I think it was like ten songs on Deck The Halls Bruise Your Hand, very sweetness...I gotta find that.

Good review. I agree.

I like it but it feels cheap almost. After the greatness of mmhmm.

Great review G-Press...i totally agree with you. Which to Bury, Us or the Hatchet (acoustic) just doesn't cut it for me and the version on mmhmm is one of my favorite tracks on the cd.

Although the new songs are alright they do sound like mmhmm b-sides. Either way i'm still gonna purchase this EP when i can find a copy of it somewhere.

Catels EP felt full and perfect.
duly noted.

but all their material was new and pre-first release. I really can't blame Relient K for putting out an EP between albums that may have some acoustic or alternate versions of songs. I mean, I'm just happy i have some more songs to tide me over.

just to let you know, "Over Thinking" is actually from their previous album, "Two Rights Don't Make a Left, But Three Do." so technically it's not a new track...well, aside from being an acoustic version of course.

Same here, but I think I might have to post my Deftones review soon.

And Garret, your review was good, but IMO, I would have given it a higher rating. I love this EP.

I think it should be known that most of their EPs are like this, if not all of them. It might have a few early demos, but for the most part, the EP between full lengths will always sound like its predecessor.

i love this review, especially given the fact that the reviewer takes an honest approach to the 10 point system. it's a very fair review. It's a solid listen, fans of RK will surely enjoy it, but its far from a phenominal album/ep, and more importantly to me, the reveiwer and the review are also in realization that a 6.9 in NOT a bad rating at all. People exepct far too often to see an 8-10 next to their band of the moment when the album itself may not necessarily be deserving of that grade. Awesome job, Garret. Keep up the great work.

also, i very much enjoyed this ep. :)

I got it on the day "MMMHHMMM" came out...it was being packaged with "Two Lefts Don't Make a Right...but Three Do" album, and it is totally sweet, especially the most appropriate version of "12 Days of Christmas" ever committed to recording!!!

Awesome review, I must say. It was written well and I agreed with every point. It's refreshing to see a band like Relient K. They're not trying to be amazing musically, but they make a good sound and something fun to here. The EP is a wonderful short follow-up to Mmhmm, and that's alot, considering it was one of the best poppunk album's I've heard. Right up there with blink for me.

The Truth is one of the best RK songs to date. I'm addicted to this ep, but personally I think Hatchet turned out better than Be My Escape. Also, if anyone has that acoustic version of Who I Am Hates Who I've Been that was on iTunes (i don't have this) could you please hook me up via AIM?

I completely agree. There are far too many reviews with > 8 ratings. If people see 3.5 stars ouf of five, they think that's a good thing. But 6.9/10 isn't. They are, in essence, the same rating. I would have probably given MMHMM an 8.5 or so. Better than four stars, but not up to 4.5

Thanks for the review. I checked the album out on AOL Music (http://music.aol.com/songs/new_releases_full_cds?defaultTab=15 ) and it definitely got me interested in buying. For any of you that haven't checked out Relient K's older material, I'd definitely recommend it. "Two Lefts Don't Make a Right, But Three Do..." doesn't have as much punk edge, but it's still a solid release. "The Anatomy of Tongue in Cheek" is pretty sweet, too. Their older releases have a lot more goofy songs with tons of pop-culture references, but if you like the sense of humor you'll like the songs. The song "My Girlfriend (http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/RELIENT-K/My-Girlfriend.html)" from their self-titled 2000 album is probably the first of Relient K's music I ever heard, and it was hilarious. "Because... Marilyn Manson ate my girlfriend." (Wikipedia: Relient K (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relient_K) -- history, discography, etc.)

Yeah, when picking up the EP i saw the Christmas EP packaged with 2 Lefts, and I really wanted to buy it even though I already own 2 lefts... I still might go back and buy it anyway.
