I honestly don't see why people still really hate Fall Out Boy. In their Infinity On High days, yes, I can understand why people hated them. They were all over the place being flashy, but Folie, I just saw the band settle down and connect again.

I like Fall Out Boy too. I like a somewhat healthy range of music. I enjoy music running the gamut from Guthrie to Coltrane to Bambaataa to the Shaggs to Iannis Xenakis to Fela Kuti. I'm not the most diverse music connoisseur nor the most knowledgable, but I've got a fair collection of what I preceive to be some of the best the medium has to offer.
That said, there are the occasional times when, after eating a complete meal of substance, I just want so refined sugar. Fall Out Boy is desert. They're my snack food. I enjoy those fucking muppets on occasion as mindless, obnoxious fun. I certainly don't think they're particularly good in the slightest, and I empathize with those who feel they suck (they do), but, well, there are times in which I want sucky music. When I do, Fall Out Boy is one of those bands I look to.

I enjoyed the Seun album from last year, but I wasn't necessarily enamored with it to the extent Craig was after you recommended it to me. I did a little research (well, Wikipedia and reading a little excerpt from a David Toop article on The Wire), and decided to check out Fela's stuff a few months back. I'm really taken with it.

Oh yeah. I'm sure even Seun will agree his material is nowhere near Fela quality.

Which, not to backtrack, isn't to say I didn't enjoy Many Things. Last year's LP was incredibly fun and definitely was one of the best things you'd recommended to me from '08 (as well as what would inevitably become my favorite album of last year, Wagonwheel Blues which means I owe you a handjob or the heterosexual equivalent...I'm not quite sure what that is. Soy juice?). I just thought, having read the little Toop article and wiki, "if this guy's good, and he's being raved about and is greatly impacted by his Raga Bop-conjuring father, his dad must, at the least, be worth listening to." Turns out, I was right.
For the record, things Vinh has recommended to me that I can recall and enjoyed:
The Tallest Man on Earth's Shallow Grave
The War on Drugs' Wagonwheel Blues
Seun Kuti's Many Things
Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis' Two Men and the Blues
I know there's been more, but I can't remember them at the moment. All good though. Handies all around, Vinh. Oh, and the Silver Jews. I was never compelled to check them out, despite enjoying Malkmus until you had to go and write an entertaining/informative article on them. Fuck off, Vinh. I don't have anymore money. I'm in university.

Mmhmm. If he can refine his songwriting without sacrificing any of its bombast, he can do great things.

There's something that just works when he wails "Don't bring that shit to Africa" as the horns swell and the entire song hits a crescendo. It's not particularly poignant or subtle songwriting, but it's engaging and emotionally striking. Hearing that particular part of Don't Give That Shit to Me just makes me think he'll be something undeniably great at some point.

He carries himself with a swagger as if he already knows he'll be great and while this would annoy me from an ordinary rock band, it's somehow refreshing from him.

Oh yeah. That isn't marketing bravado or false "women want to touch me because of my shitty radio anthem about cheating on my girlfriend with my ex" confidence; that's inherent audacity (shouting a command, the intricate and epic arrangement meant to accentuate the sentiment). It's sexy and strong in a way that works.
Fair compromise I say.
