Indeed it is! I think I like The Fine Art Of Self-Destruction a little bit more but that could change.

I'd say The Fine Art Of Self Destruction.

wow, that's kind of shocking for some reason. I'm surprised he wasn't already signed by a bigger label considering how (kind of) successful his last album was and the Springsteen collaboration.

What's the final verdict? I've been a bit distracted as far as listening to new ish goes, partially because I've been listening to far too much talk/comedy radio at work...And the new Gaslight Anthem album. Haha. That record's pretty good background music (partially because it flies by so fast, as well as because it's relatively low-key).

Honestly, I just hope this new one is more of the same. And uh yeah. That's not him. Imagine if it were, though? He'd be a certified dreamboat.

Final verdict is that it is more of the same. Haha. But I mean that in a completely good way. More anthemic, balls-out rock songs with some more reserved moments as well. Right now it's one of my favorite albums released this year, so hopefully you'll dig it as well!

Yeah, haha. Oh, Wikipedia. It also lists him as being 42 years old, which doesn't seem right to me (could've sworn he was only 30-something) but whatever. Maybe I just haven't been paying enough attention.

Good to hear! If it's "more of the same," I fully support it. He's one of those artists who can get by without changing his sound because he paints such a great picture with his words. If that makes sense. I have a thing for bands capable of "bringing me places" while simultaneously feeling things. Jesse always takes me to some bar in Brooklyn, talking about girls and life.

That's right. My music is my friend. I'm a nerd. Haha.

As for his age? Him being 42 doesn't seem entirely out of the question. I'd have to do a bit more research but, if he is 42? Then he goes from "looking awful for 30" to "looking great for 42!" Hah!

Yeah I definitely get what you mean. At this point I'd feel like if he tried to deviate too much from his usual sound, it wouldn't work out too well. He's great at those driving rock anthems that still tell a great story. Same goes for his 'ballads' as well. Don't worry, I'm right there nerding out with you. Haha.

And you're right, it's not entirely out of the question or anything, it just didn't seem to match up with what I remembered. Doesn't really matter much or anything. But yeah, if the dude's 42, he's got to be taking pretty good care of himself. Ha. Must be taking a cue from Bruce. :-d

I just threw on the new record (thanks for spurring me on!) and I have to say--how fucking Clash is that opening guitar riff? Haha. Sigh. I <3 rock n' roll. A good way to gauge his age...

I just looked up D-Generation (his old band) on WikiPedia. That band formed in 1991 and he played in Heart Attack during the eighties (1980 according to the title of their discography) and the first members were 12-16 years old. So it seems highly likely that if he's not yet forty, he's pushin' it pretty good. Haha. ;-)

For sure. It's insane to me how underrated he is. I'm sure lots of people would be into his music if they just knew it even existed. Ha. I mean he's got his following but it could stand to be a bit bigger, you know?

Haha, of course! But yeah, definitely get that Clash-esque feeling from that song. But good call, I knew he was at least 30-something but 42 just didn't sound right. Not that it matters or anything, it just kind of threw me for a loop. Oh well, s'all good.

It really is insane how underrated he is! I would say I "don't get it," but the reality is? He just doesn't have the hype machine behind him and people are close-minded. People find their favorites early in the game and stick to them. There's a reason the Gaslight Anthem and Against Me! are as big as they are and all of the bands that open for them still wallow in obscurity. Sure, said-bands are at the top of their game and all that but...I don't know. I wish people were more open-minded.

Part of me wants to blame a big concern with being "open-minded" that seems to have cropped up as of late. "I listen to a little bit of everything!" Of course, what that means is that you spend a lot of time looking for different types of music, just focusing on the more "mainstream" areas of each genre. You don't dig in deep and hard. Of course, I just so happen to dig deep into punk rock and listen to the "singles" from bands like Spoon. Haha. Shrug.

And Jesse Malin is the shit. I'm on track eight now (stupid meetings keep interrupting me--being an adult is stupid) and I really love this one! It has a bit less shine than Glitter in the Gutter, and I think it works well for the songs.

Hahaha. I guess that counts? Someone on staff needs to hype the shit out of the new record or something. But it'll get a paragraph review, two comments from people who already listen to him confirming how awesome it is, and then it'll sink into oblivion. Unless there already is a review that contradicts this, in which case I'll just look like a dick.

He should cover a Don Henley song. I hear that is a surefire way to score a big hit on the radio and keep all of your friends.

hahah. Get back in the studio and make On Your Sleeve, Vol. 2, Malin!

or he could cover katy perry/justin bieber/whatever all those other gimmick bands cover on those fearless comps.

Jesse Malin Goes Pop, Volume 1! Kind of like what the former lead singer from Zebrahead did. Holy fuck, was that atrocious...

Dude. Seriously. It's fucking laughable. Imagine the singer from Zebrahead singing over a bunch of karaoke tracks and you know what this album sounds like.

It's not even like he picked songs that influenced him. No. Lady Gaga, A-HA, that one song about the stuff and the things, fuckin' Toto...

I miss D*Generation =-(. Glad they're doing a handful of shows in the fall though. Jesse Malin is the man. Can't really get into his solo work though.
