We talked about this in my class and I was actually wondering what you guys thought. What do you think makes a good government?

It'd be interesting to see what people that support different parties think that it takes for a government to be good. I wonder just how different the opinions will be.

I suppse a good government is one that answers to its people and makes policy built on the values of not just the people who elected it but the nation as a whole. It must care about the greater good of its citizens but also the effect of its policy on each individual citizen.

I suppose when it comes down to it a good government is someone that doesn't piss many people off but gets the job done.

Different governments work better in different places. In theory, something like a socialist democracy would be the most stable, but there are a lot of countries where it would fail to be successful. There is a lot to be said on the subject, and I am no longer taking any politics or economics classes.

you need transparency...you need to be able to watch what the gov does and ensure they dont do anything wrong.

you need a stable currency...without this all your policies will go for naught and you will ensure your country is poverty stricken

you need at least some sort of centralized entity. if you do not have a strong state center all will crumble.

there are numerous others but those are the first three i thought of.

a good government begins when the people they govern, the citizens, take responsibility for themselves.

Socialism is not working to well as more and more countries that are very socialist are extremely leaning toward more capitalistic ways. Why? there is no incentive to takes risks and really increase productivity. In socialistic countries people are caught by a safety net if they take risks and that really fucks over the government.

a good government takes care of infrastructure and maintains it, is answerable to the people it governs, and stays the hell out of everybodys lives as much as possible.

Unfortunately, there will never be any sort of "good government" so long as people are not generally good and honest. Less people in the world would help a lot, so do your part and off yourself, or a friend.

I had forgotten about this thread.... but here I go...

There are a few issues to deal with when designing a "good" government. All of them revolve around the fact the people are inherently evil - and serve themselves when pushed.

A good goverment will strike a balance between always following the will of the majority, and sometimes subverting the majority in order to better serve everyone.

For example, when we become too democratic, people get carried away, and pass laws that end up hurting them. The damage that the referendum process has done to the budget in California is a great example of this. The average person is just not fit to decide everything that goes on in a city/state/nation, because the average person simply does not understand all the issues.

On the other hand, a good government cannot leave too much power in the government itself. When that happens, the government becomes corrupt, and ends up serving itself, and not the people that it serves.

Ultimately, a good government will balance the power between the people and the elected officials in such a way that the people are served well, but when their desires are out of line or come from an ignorant belief or lack of knowledge, they can be checked by the people in power.

Essentialy, I guess I described the American system in a lot of ways, although there are some obvious flaws in it, just like there would be in any system.
