Strung Out - Prototypes and Painkillers
Record Label: Fat Wreck
Release Date: March 31, 2009

Since 1992, this California quintet have been playing fast, melodic, technical skatepunk -- and never slowing down, even through the difficult times. Seven albums later, and after loads of compilation appearances, the band has decided to put all their b-side and raritie efforts onto one full-length so the fans can have all their favorite hard-to-find gems in one place. And boy howdy, are there a whole mess of 'em!

Now, b-side collections are generally hit-or-miss, and this is no different. No one ever expects masterpiece material here, and a majority of these tracks are no surprise for anyone who has followed Strung Out's work -- but for every "Novella" or "Lost Motel" (two of the band's best tracks, period), there are forgettable cuts like "Mad Mad World" or "Sinner or Coward." It should be noted that it's easy to hear which of these songs were initially early recordings, and while the band has done their best to re-master each of the 25 tracks, there's only so much they can do.

Again, let me reiterate: 25 tracks, many of which are splendid ("Velvet Alley" and "Bark at the Moon," from early entries in the "Punk Goes..." series, are terrific), some of that which were left off prior records for good reason. The best compliment one can give Strung Out here is witnessing the growth in sound that the band has gone through. They've become much more melodic and technical in recent years, and perhaps the only downside to Prototypes is that all the tracks are in random order, and only die-hards will hear the evolution. Not everything here is mint condition A+ material (the seven previously unreleased cuts are mainly demos/outtakes), but in all essence, it's not really meant for anyone but the longtime fan.

Make sure to purchase the hard copy if you're a fan, as the band has given an explanation for every track and why it is here, when it was recorded and what the background is. For all the big Strung Out fans, this is a nice hold over until something new. For the casual fans or newcomers, you're better off giving Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues another spin.

Shit even for a compilation album that's alot of songs to get through.

Somebodys got that same cover too, but I can't put my finger on it.

Give me a Strung Out album, live or rarities or b-sides or covers or even pooping in a jug for an hour, any day over the trash that is being peddled as music in this day and age.

I love 'Your Mistake'. I'm tempted to buy this so I can read the liner notes and all that.

It's a fold-out digipack release -- but if you're a fan, I suggest getting it since they do have a few sentences on each track and why it's here.

I would kill a polar bear to get my hands on a new Strung Out album. I already have the majority of these b-sides but it's great to see some unreleased stuff on here. Really look forward to giving this a listen.

I would have liked to have seen these in in chronological order, but I think it flows well as-is. Psyched to read the liner notes/lyrics.

And props for their inclusion of the Descendents cover. That one made me ridiculously happy.

I love this band. It's amazing I've been listening to Strung Out for so many years. Makes me feel old that when I think of first listening to them I was young. (relatively speaking I'm still young but I mean living with my parents high school young).

I love the song Satellite. The lyrics there are simply fantastic, too bad it's not on this comp.

thank you for letting me know about the liner notes. i was debating just getting this on iTunes, but extensive liner notes is enough to get me to the best buys and buy this shit hard copy.

Can't wait to pick this up, will definitely be getting a hard copy. "Lost Motel" is an amazing song especially for being a B-side.

"Novella" is such an excellent track. Whenever strung out does straight up Pop Punk, they do it so right. (other examples: "Speedball", "Swan Dive")

dude, a-fuckin-men. on BHOLA, which happened to be my favorite album of 07 (even over the mighty "Career Suicide", CiS's "...Is Dead", Smoke Or Fire's "This Sinking Ship", Bedouin's "Street Gospels" and "Rise or Die Trying"). but anyway, on that album of masterpieces ('All the Nations', 'Party in the Hills', 'Diver"...) 'Novella' was the best of all. an absolute masterpiece.

i can't fuckin wait for a new album.

also, i know about 70% of the songs on here already, but who cares, it's an incredible compilation.

BHOLA contained some of their best b-sides -- there are about 2 or 3 included here, and they are all excellent.

I have all of these songs floating around on my computer already, but I am pretty stoked on hearing them all again.

I'm going to buy the album for the notes about the songs.

I can't wait for new stuff to come out. The video dairies they post are way nice and im looking forward to hearing some good stuff pretty soon.

lol, i'm getting up there. with every comment on this site, i slowly reveal my age and end up being "that guy" that can't let the past go. haha, and yes...deville is so awesome. paperwalls is another favorite. but how can you get any better than the opening guitar riff on too close to see?

sheesh...

Matchbox still might be their best. it's impossible to choose though.

what are your feelings on "Element Of Sonic Defiance"?

i really liked it. it wasn't what i was expecting coming off of twisted by design, but i felt it represented a good mix of styles they've portrayed over the years. the first track feels like it could have been on their first album. my two favorites are scarecrows and razorblade.

have you seen them live before? their drummer is f'ing nuts.

'Scarecrows' is incredible.

interestingly, i've only seen them live once and that was at Warped 05, the stole the day (even though it was 105 degrees, 100% humidity and i thought i was gonna die.)

my fuckin girlfriend gets to see them with Death By Stereo, Pour Habit AND This Is A Standoff!! lucky bastard she is (of course, she also has to live in Canada).

i was also supposed to see em in 07 but it didn't happen thanks to an exceptionally flat tire.
