Lots of buzz surrounding the Randy Nichols-managed The Starting Line (www.startinglinerock.com). As press time, looks like the band will be out of their Geffen deal and become a free agent. We hear label folks are flying to check out the band while they’re on the Nintendo Fusion Tour with Fall Out Boy.

really? because out of the whole night, i'd have to say that the starting line put on the best show.... mcs put on a really amazing show also. compared to tsl and mcs, the other bands were just mediocore.

it seems to me every time any band gets out of one oppressive contract with a label that doesnt properly market them, they rush right back into another oppressive contract that doesnt properly market them... but just for a large signing bonus.

As long as their new label does haven't Ashlee Simpson on the roster, I think they'll be fine.

The Starting Line: "We want to be dropped"
Geffen: "No"
*Frank enters office with baseball hand*
The Starting Line: "Yes"
Geffen: "Okay"
*The Frank and The Starting Line leave the Geffen office to frolic happliy through the flowers, Kenny, trips because he was drinking, everybody laughs and does a dog pile on Kenny*

wow.... the ending to that story makes it so horrible
oh well. posting it anyways!

i think a major part has to do with promotion. they promoted the hell out of YC even before they were huge. they had vans and shit at warped tour even though there weren't there. they had their easily digestible single on MTV and they were just everywhere. I didn't care for them then and I don't now. FOB was just bound to get big because they are just that good.

as for TSL geffen never promoted them. the only promotion they got was for their song bedroom talk which was supposed to be this offensive track and it turned out to be funny because it was just a bad track.

my point is that they are a decent band but without promotion it's really hard.

it's a shame that they haven't gotten as big as FOB and YC. they're hands down the better of the 3 bands, that's for sure.

as for labels:

i hate it when everyone says island. i have the feeling that if they went with island, they'd get grouped with fall out boy, as thrice has gotten grouped with thursday, and their names would be interchangeable.

columbia - just...no.

capitol - home of relient k and yellowcard. both bands have blown the fuck up, so it's a possibility

warner - eh. unless kenny and the guys want to get into the whole eyeliner thing (green day, MCR, avenged sevenfold, the used, HIM)..but kenny looooves the glassjaw guys and daryl palumbo, and warner is the home to glassjaw, head automatica and men, women, and children..

interscope - never looked into interscope much. AFI, JEW, and brand new are on that label. as is 50 cent. 50 cent + TSL would be like Jay Z + FOB, though brand new and TSL = BFF. and the band is heavily influenced by JEW.

so who knows. anywhere but geffen and columbia.

I have to disagree with you about TSL though.
I have seen them seven times now and I will admit that twice, they were kind of boring. Sometimes when Kenny drinks too much they aren't too good. But every other time I have seen them they just blew me away.

I love Based On a True Story, but it doesn't have any song that screams huge single like Sugar, We're Going Down (and 3/4 of FUTCT) did. I think their next album will have potential to blow up, but only if there's at least one huge single sounding song on it. Something like Best of Me. Had that song been on Based On a True Story instead of Say it Like You Mean It, I think they would have owned this summer just as much as Fall Out Boy did.

I'm almost 100% sure that they've toured together. They got their starts in the same area -- and I think they've been friends ever since. Keith from Days Away actually sings the bridge of "Left Coast Envy" on TSL's old album -- the "I'm taking pictures..." part.

Mae was actualy playing too and I dont know why everyone says they have the shittiest live performance because sure there not even close to the best that Ive seen but there music live is just great so you cant complain. It was pretty sweet because I got to talk with Dave a little after their set too. Yeah but TSL I hope where ever they end up they will be treated the best they could be by their label. TSL has been my favorite band for a while now and they definatlly have the potential to have millions more to like them.
