View Full Version : Paramore or Death Cab?

I got into an argument yesterday with a friend who says paramore clearly has better lyrics than death cab for cutie because death cab is "pretentious" and "tries too hard to be deep". Does anyone out there honestly think paramore has better lyrics?

Nope, not even close. Not only are their deeper lyrics better, but DCFC's "shallow" lyrics are also better than anything I've heard by Paramore. This question is insulting.

I don't even like Death Cab very much. They have only a few good songs, but c'mon.

I like Death Cab.
I like Paramore

I consider both of them pop bands though
not much more than that.
and yes Death Cab is a little pretentious
but Paramore is for little girls aren't they?
It's all music though, listen to them when you feel like that.

Definitely Death Cab, and I'm not even that big a fan of them anymore.

The song "A Lack of Color" is better than Paramore.

I mean don't get me wrong, I like both bands. I like paramore a little better actually, but lyrically, they cant compare to DCFC

i've never considered Death Cab's lyrics to be pretentious. i don't really listen to Paramore, but from what i've heard i would say Death Cab has stronger lyrics... since the only thing that comes to mind when i think of Paramore is "once a whore, you're nothing more."

Pop-punk kids think anything that doesn't exactly follow their scene's aesthetic is "pretentious." Death Cab's lyrics are pretty simple, if you ask me. And yes, better than Paramore's.

I'm not saying death cab has the most amazing lyrics ever. But a big part of it is how the lyrics come together like in "cath" or "title and registration"

I would rather listen to a band that "tries too hard to be deep" than one that isn't at all.

I hope the band you're claiming is trying too hard to be "deep" isn't the one I think you're referencing.

Sadly,it looks like it is not a joke.

What?

To reiterate (if it didn't make sense for whatever reason), I was mocking the fact that the OP's friend thinks that DCFC tries too hard. Hence the quotations around the phrase.

hahahahahahaha

your friend doesnt even know what the FUCK they're talking about. if anything paramore's got more pretense because they're so wrapped up in the "scene" sound, though its not my place to judge whether thats how the music naturally comes out or whether they get their albums produced in a way as to emphasize that image/vibe. and death cab has very straightforward, accessible lyrics, not sure where your friend is coming from with the trying too hard to be deep thing. ben sings in his own voice, they produce their own records as well as they can but in their own organic flavor, they dress like normal people in their promo's and aren't going for any sort of "image" (as opposed to hayley and her zebra shirts and yellow pants or whatever the fuck shes wearing these days)... i dont even know how you can justify calling death cab pretentious.

Isn't that the weirdest thing? It's happening to me too. I'm glad I didn't overbuy on their stuff, because I'm not gonna stop liking Transatlanticism but the other stuff..I hear ya.

LOL but you wouldn't be you unless you always did that.

Check out these Death Cab lyrics, what pretentious garbage:

the atlantic was born today and i'll tell you how:
the clouds above opened up and let it out.

I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
when the water filled every hole.
and thousands upon thousands made an ocean,
making islands where no island should go.
oh no.

those people were overjoyed; they took to their boats.
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat.
the rhythm of my footsteps crossing flood lands to your door have been silenced forever more.
the distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
it seems farther than ever before
oh no.

I need you so much closer

How anyone thinks such a mainstream oriented band like Death Cab is pretentious is beyond me.

lol @ "originally posted by transatlanticism"

and yeah ben's lyrics may have been dense on the first two records, but since the photo album theyve been straightfoward with accessible metaphors and easily associable imagery.

Depends what kind of a mood you're in. Paramore are for rockin' out, feeling good or chilling whereas Death Cab, I can always relate to when I'm sad or nostalgic or something.

If I were to read my little sister's middle school diary, I'm guessing it'd be identical to Paramore's lyrics. I mean, c'mon now, DCFC isn't even known for writing brilliant, or even good lyrics, but no doubt are they far and away superior to Paramore's
