Thrice - Vheissu
Release Date: October 18th, 2005
Record Label: Island Records

Have you ever finished watching a particularly moving film or completed a strikingly emotional book, only to sit in your plush-leather seat; dumbfounded? There is that split second of realization that nothing you ever accomplish in your life will come close to the intellectual and emotional genius you just experienced. I have had such a feeling on only a few rare occasions; however, after each listen of Thrice’s Vheissu, this numbness pummels the skin around my chest.

It is perfect.

Reflect on that word for a moment, perfect, because it is not something I write often. Yes, I get excited about CDs, and yes within the next few years you will probably see me become aroused by music time and time again; however, I will never use the word ‘perfect’ to describe another CD again. As of this moment, and due to this album, it’s retired.

Before we journey further, let us get the basics out of the way:

Is it good? Yes.
Should you buy it? Yes.
If that is all you wanted to know, stop reading.

It is no secret that I do not write many reviews. I am quite simply not that good of a writer to discuss musical shadows on pieces I do not fully love. Yet, on the rare occasion I am absolutely floored by an album, I feel that I have a duty to put to paper how an artist’s work has changed me. This is such an album.

Open your mind.

Morse code through the atmosphere is how the anathematic album begins its systematic takeover of your life. Like a wolf haunted by the smell of blood, we are tossed into the album’s opener “Image of the Invisible” with that un-shakable feeling of hunger and lust. Addicting gang-vocal chants lead the listener through not only this song, but also act as if to foreshadow an undeniable rallying call motif. Do not get too comfortable because we move quickly from the fast-paced opening track to an almost slower melodic trance.

Within “Between the End and Where We Lie,” we find stimulating noises stalking through the background of the track. The ambiance almost draws your attention away from the vocals; but only for a second, before they come crashing back to the forefront of your consciousness. Beautifully constructed; it is within the small details of the song the listener should pay attention. Lyrically, Dustin has taken his already superb writing to a completely new level. It is mind-bending how listening to another’s words can actually make you feel smarter.

As the song fades, an ethereal voice sings as if bouncing off granite walls. The listener is immediately drawn into the somber mood. If while listening to the previous track you thought the band had lost their harder edge, it is within “The Earth Will Shake” you realize how very wrong you were. Pushing forward with a rhythmic intensity we are dragged though one of the biggest songs in recent memory. If you allow yourself, you can slip into an almost daze like state; the sun raining on your back, the sweat stinging your eyes, the salty taste in the corner of your mouth as you echo the chant down to the soil at your feet.

The picture painted through the music is pristine.

Moving seamlessly from the gruff screams of the previous track to poignant melody the listener becomes engulfed as “Atlantic” takes off with a plethora of sounds. It is as if the song itself has created an atmosphere around its listener. Acoustic guitars and calming drums acting as the guide by which your body is pulled to ever so tightly. The song leads perfectly into “For Miles” which opens with a dancing piano piece. While their peers continue the march of “par for course,” Thrice evolved. They have pushed the envelope for not only themselves, but for all of music under this scene’s umbrella. Epic. The chorus on this song has no other description for which it fits. It is as if the collusion of time and space has this chorus already predestined for greatness. The most amazing part is that this word … epic begins to take on a completely new meaning as the album progresses. I have only called two other albums in my entire life “epic,” because I think the word stands itself, and the article it describes, up on too high a pedestal. Yet, I am not in the slightest squeamish of using it to describe the complexity that enthralls the listener with each new listen.

I know there are detractors that are turned off with how I choose to review CDs. I understand how my hyperbolic tone sometimes stretches the imagination with the reaches I take. To these people I must confess: I only write what I would be screaming to my friends at every chance if I did not have this glorified soapbox from which to shout. Music is my passion. I am not good enough of a writer to explain the vast nuances of the music; I can only write what I know. Moreover, when we are discussing this album, I only know it is unlike anything I was prepared for.

“Hold Fast Hope,” bursts with a fury I cannot put into words. Dustin’s vocals scratch at the back of your eardrums, the bass line reverberate your teeth, and the lyrics border on gospel. What appears to be an ode to the Biblical tale of Jonah appears through the shifting bitter screams and soothing melody, that only Thrice can create:

deep beneath the black dawn, leagues from lightning’s flash
ribs will raise cathedrals for the morning mass
steel yourself in sackcloth roll your heart in ash
scrape your skin with steel wool and hold fast hope

Each song brings forth the art of music. Each constructed to spin an atmosphere acting as a rallying call. “Music Box” churns out a steady rhythm; “Like Moth to Flame” contemplates its own tempo with each beat. The songs beginning in a completely different area then where they end. This sort of song writing leaves the listener unable to guess where each song will take them; and this journey is what makes the music so infectious. “Of Dust and Nations” ghostly opener paints a mood upon the canvas of the willing mind. Each track acting as a separate piece of art within a gallery; the common theme apparent in all, yet each taking on a life and breath of their own. Vocals move into the most melodic we have ever heard from the band and wither into a lengthy dreamy instrumental as the song fades.

“Stand and Feel Your Worth” should be the anthem by which the world unites behind. The bass and drums are magnificent. Dustin’s vocals boarder on screams yet pull back just before climaxing; all of the notes are carried just long enough to linger as after-thoughts.

we are wrought with breath and dirt, washed in second sight
woven through the earth, wreathed in rings of light
we will wield a second birth, whet our wits and knives
wrap our knees in earth, wrap ourselves in light

The production makes it sound as though the band is playing in a red sahara mirage, surrounded by sand where you can almost feel the needles tapping your cheeks. The apex comes with the gruff screams of pure passion that close out the track.

Ending the album with “Red Sky” is as if the best was held for last. Epic. There I go using that word again. Fucking epic. It’s bordering on being the best song of the year. It’s so good, that I feel I’m doing a disservice by even allowing myself to attach my own words to it. Everything I have ever written isn’t worthy of being associated in any way with how absolutely breathtaking this song is. It could close out “Lord of the Rings,” or “The Godfather,” – that’s how epic this track is. I’m not saying anything else besides buy this album just for this song. You’ll get your money’s worth in just this four minutes and twenty seconds.

I have to tell you this was the hardest review I’ve ever had to write. It’s as though I was asked to describe an illusory color, or light itself. I don’t know how to put words on greatness. It’s an album like this, that’s so big, so monstrous, and so gigantic – that it makes my words and my descriptions or feelings so dwarfed by comparison. For me, it’s like Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity or Brand New’s Deja Entendu – if anyone ever says they don’t like at least some part of it … I lose all interest in ever talking to them again. All the clichés are worn out. I fail to conceive what to type next. All of my words mean absolutely nothing unless you make this album your own. Take it in as though it were oxygen. Breathe each line, each note, and each small ambient sound. Now as my lack of vocabulary and my self-consciousness has become too much for me, I can only close this review with the most simple of words: this is music, this is your anthem.

my thoughts exactly on this record. just the fact that teppei, widely considered one of the finer guitarists in the "scene", completely drops his guitar at points in the record gives you an idea of how dramatic of a departure this record is from the artist in the ambulance. parts of the record (the chorus on the earth will shake, then ending of stand and feel your worth) are just rattling, and they are followed by such sheer epic beauty (atlantic, red sky) i think this album can best be described in one word. roller coaster.

I think calling this album "perfect" is a bit of a stretch....

don't get me wrong, I think the album is excellent, Thrice did a great job with it. But I just don't think the album is so good it's "perfect" and the word should be retired for it.

Either way, i suggest buying this album. It's different from most of the albums being put out nowadays, quite a breath of fresh air. The artistic growth Thrice shows on this album is probably my favorite part.

This album is one of those ones you hear, shrug and say "meh." It's nothing special especially compared to their prior albums, particularly identity crisis. Where's the great guitarwork like that in deadbolt and similar songs? Not in vheissu.

No album can be "perfect". Such a huge word to use. This album I would say is Thrice's most artistic album. People will always disagree with it being their best album they have put out because they are not a huge fan of change and different styles of music. But if people open their minds and listen to how much heart and soul they put into making this album, they will see that this CD speaks to you in such soft spoken words. I think this is thrice's best album they have made. The other album's-dont get me wrong- were amazing and I love'd them, but you cannot just judge an album based on how much YOU like it, you need to judge it on how the band potray's their art work. How a band thinks of what they are doing. Take one more listen to this album, augment your minds, bring out your open minds and listen what is probably one of the best album's created as an artistic point of view.

Only 3 Albums deserve a "Perfect" rating:
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisted
The Clash - London Calling
maybe:Nirvana - Nevermind
Ramones - Ramones
U2 - The Joshua Tree

But Vhessiu is amazing but, far from perfect I find Deja Entendu, Full Collapse, Between The Heart And The Synapse, American Idiot, Juturna,...Is A Real Boy, and The new Saosin Full-Length(from the 2 demos I've heard) are better but not by far.

I dissagry, Thrice's masterpeice Vheissu is the only album i've ever heard that deserves to be called perfect. If you don't like their new style, listen to their old albums, because they aren't changing back, they've moved on.

How the hell could you say about two songs that an album is better then vheissu, I mean Vheissu contains "Red Sky" and "Atlantic" those two songs alone have a bigger impact than Saosin could ever imagine, don't get me wrong I love Saosin, but they remain with the same thing, Thrice openend a new gate for themselves and they did it the way it should

I agree on Deja, and definitley agree on ...Is A Real Boy. But... Recieving End of Sirens? Circa Survive? Soasin? I like all those bands but those CD's are hardly better than Vheissu.

Btw, this CD is still amazing.

That review was amazing dude you put my feelings into words so perfectly
The way you described it, this review is truly worthy of Vheissu
I love all of thrices work their lyrics are amazing and their
Instrumental talent is just as awesome, but Vheissu
Realy shows the true meaning of their music
And if you have read V. the novel by Thomas Pynchon
(Which is where the name Vheissu comes from)
You gain an even greater understanding of this masterpeice
I realy dislike people who say that they don't like this album
Because it isn't "Thrice" It is most defently Thrice
It just shows a much more emotional and deep side
Of the post-hardcore band, those who say
They don't like Vheissu because it isn't Thrice
Are not true fans, True fans marvel at this work of art.

Anyways great job on the review
But do not retire your use of "perfect"
Just yet as Thrice's new album is on the way
they have started writing and recording a 4 disc concept record, with each disc being themed sonically and thematically to correspond with the four natural elements - earth, air, water and fire. The final record will have somewhere between 20 and 25 songs, divided between the 4 discs
now that sounds cool

:)

This is why people make music.
Using that premise, I think I could agree with the "perfect" rating.
Amazing, most assuredly.
I'd stay away from saying "perfect" simply because music is based on personal taste.
I would never compare it to something like Green Day's "American Idiot" or Nirvana's "Nevermind", because on the one hand the music is completely different, on the other this album wasn't out to get more fans or to be played on the radio; hardly any of it can be, but to truly (which is does so "perfectly") bare a man's soul (as you can tell I'm not a big nirvana or green day fan...).
You put it so well, in the first sentence "to sit, dumbfounded" after finishing such a work.
How ironic I found it used for 5 bucks...
I guess it's a sign of the times.
Sad, no?

There is a good reason to why Jason starts off the actual review with the seemingly simple but nevertheless brilliant suggestion "open your mind". It is, truthfully, such a disappointment to see such narrow-minded people spitting out idiotic things like the Saosin record being better than "Vheissu". I really don't want to put down Saosin, that wasn't my intention, but they are just another run-of-the-mill screamo/post-hardcore/whatever-you-guys-call-them band. If I am to be completely honest, I do not agree with this "comparing-records-with-other-records"-thing. Comparing "Vheissu" with "Saosin" or "Juturna" is an insult; comparing it with "American Idiot" or "Nevermind" is just plain stupid. I like Thrice because of them being such great guys and I like "Vheissu" because of the true musicianship Thrice portrays in each and every one of the 11 tracks. Open your minds; and if you decide that you don't want to, it is truly your loss.

This album pretty much is perfect, because Thrice is about as close as you can get to the perfect band.

Haha, but if ANYTHING at all kept this album from being perfect, then it would have to be that the band left off the b-sides to this album, which are just as amazing, if not better, than some of the tracks on Vheissu. I think everyone could make the argument for Flags of Dawn, as that is without a doubt the best one. But "The Weight of Glory" and "Lullaby" are great songs, as well.

Whoever said that comparing albums is stupid cause they're all different was right. It depends on your tastes, and on the artists intention, and even your mood. People keep bringing up Saosin and how much they pale in comparison to this album, and in the aspect that Vheissu seems to be coming from they are definitely correct. As a composer I feel so insignificant to everything I hear on this album. It's so creative and moving and I can't help but wonder in awe how anyone could put it all together that way. But at the same time, as a musician (drummer), I feel the same way every time I listen to Saosin, but about the aspect of sheer instrumental talent. They are by no means run-of-the-mill.

At first listen, I was pretty disappointed at how much these guys have changed. But then it grew on me, a LOT. It didn't take long after for me to trully appreciate the kind of music and sheer artistry that these guys have achieves in vheissu. This album is truly incredible, each song standing out on their own, by no means repetitive like their past couple efforts. Don't get me wrong, artist in the ambulance was an amazing fast-pased/in-your-face heavy rock album, but vheissu shows the extremely mature musical growth that this band has endured. I can't quite call it perfect, but this album is mind-blowing to the truest sense.

i just had to come back to this review and read it again. I absolutely agree. Upon first listen I was like "eh this is good and different". but wasnt really affected by it. the only song that stuck with me was The Earth Will Shake which i consider, along with Glassjaw- Convectuoso, my favorite song ever and that was the only song i'd listen to. I put the cd down for like 4 months, then came back to it and i realized the shear beauty and perfection of it. Every single song has a special meaning to me and i cant say that about many albums. Thank you Thrice! And its even more awe-inspiring that they came up with a worthy follow which is just as unbelievable. This band should be considered up there with Radiohead and U2

I've long been a fan of this bands earlier work, but I never really sat down and listened to this album based on hearing how "different" it was. Can't even begin to state how mad I am at myself for not listening until this year. Beautiful album. I keep thinking to myself the next track can't possibly keep up the pace of amazingness they are setting, and I am proven wrong everytime.

How come when i rate this album it only lets me go up to 10?....I wanted to give everything more than just 10! I agree with many of you that Red Sky is worth this CD alone but you could probably say that about any song on here.... Definitly one of the best Albums I have ever heard in my life if not the best!

it's good but not perfect. artist in the ambulance was closer to being perfect in my opinion.
i would have agreed with you before today, i was (and prolly still am) obsessed w/ "stare at the sun". i just finished listening to Vheissu for the first time. I agree with every fucking word the reviewer has said. i kno ppl r giving him shit for "over-rating" the album...honestly, thts impossible. 99% is under-rating. we live in a sick twisted world where this album isn't getting the sales or recognition it deserves while kanye west is. its getting 2 stars out of 5 on rolling stones, and thrice (as far as I know) have never been nominated for a grammy (ive lost all faith in the grammys anyways, due to them awarding best rock album to coldplay over metallica).

This album is one of those ones you hear, shrug and say "meh." It's nothing special especially compared to their prior albums, particularly identity crisis. Where's the great guitarwork like that in deadbolt and similar songs? Not in vheissu.
are crazy ppl like aware that they are crazy?

Should've gotten 100.
Best album ever made, imo. To me it's flawless.

Absolutely love this album, but the review skipped over the heavy Christian influence which is overtly apparent throughout the album.

This album gets played the least out of all my Thrice albums and I'm realizing what a shame that is. I love the album and need to bump it up in my rotation immediately.

As an 18 year old musician, I feel that I should try to broaden my musical horizons. As I joined this site, I noticed my music taste mostly matched Jason Tate's. So I figured I would check out some of the stuff he has under his "favorite albums". Needless to say, I was blown away by this CD. My only regret is that I didn't get into this band sooner. Everything about it is just absolutely mind-blowing. I wish to make music thats half as good as this CD. Right on, Jason Tate, Right on.

P.S.- Favorite Songs: Atlantic, For Miles, Red Sky.

This is Thrice's best album to date. It really mixed their hardcore sound with their space rock genius. I've listened to it so many times that everytime I listen to a song on the album, it's almost second nature to sing along. Great review indeed.

This album is so great. I was so disappointed when this came out and everyone basically shrugged it off merely because Jason gave it a "perfect" score, and most of their fans were looking for another metalcore album. Thrice invented something new here, and forever being a fan of heavy music, to get to hear it composed artfully, movingly, every single time I put in this album is a pure joy. Vheissu will forever influence everything I ever write. I personally think it's one of the greatest albums of our generation, and it IS as good as Nevermind and all of those other ground breaking albums. Unlike a lot of bands from that background, Thrice created something timeless and unique that has yet to be imitated by anyone because no one knows how to. What else do you need for a perfect score? 5 out of 5.

I think I've listened to this album at least once a week for about 5 years now and I still haven't heard it all. I'm arranging For Miles as a percussion quartet and there are still tiny, soft counter-melodies laced throughout the entire song. I'm beginning to think that this album is infinite; it's perpetually growing and changing every single time I listen to it.

I like to revisit this review every now and then to remind myself that 'perfect' music still pops up in this day & age.

Vheissu is, quite simply, a masterpiece. It has withstood the sands of time and will continue to enter into my ears and mind in years to come. One of the greatest albums I've ever heard, and I rarely praise an album this much.

Really sat down and listened to this, like gave it a good listen, for the first time today, and holy fuck. 99% is right on the nose. What an utterly enthralling album. Everything about it, every little lyric, every change in tone, is just flawless.

Ridiculous.
