Jordan Baker (from Pastepunk.com (http://Pastepunk.com)) has written an article on Myspace Records, check it out here (http://www.pastepunk.com/viewcolumn.php?id=188).

"Full-priced compilations, with the exception of the NOW Series, have as much of a market impact as a new LIMP BIZKIT album."

thought that was hilarious

somebody needs to find a way to stop downloading. now.

why doesn't some hacker just put up 8,000 viruses labeled as mr. brightside by the killers?

I thought the label was a bad idea from the first instance I heard about it. I know I already have most of the songs I like on the CD, and have no inclination to go out and buy this compilation.

well said. i had a convo with casey and brendan from treos about the label, and how its a bit of a conflict of interest. myspace has become a haven for independent artists. now that myspace has a label, will other artists take the back seat?

"Think of the driving force behind MySpace right now, at least in the independent music community. Essentially, it's well-targeted, consensual spam. We become "friends" with bands, and then they send us 30 emails a day about how they have new merch and how last night's show in City X was "seriously awesome."

haha, right on.

Bravo, he says what we all think.

exactly.

it would've been radder if they put out a comp of all unsigned bands that need exposure and are using myspace for that. I'm sure everyone who buys this comp already has most of the music on it from downloading, or owning the CDs.

myspace records is just a stupid idea.

When the key selling point of your CD is that you get to post four extra pictures, that's kind of a bad thing. One would expect the music to be the point of buying the CD.

On top of that, what's the point of four extra pictures, when all of your pictures are going to be down half the time anyways?? Hopefully, they take the profits from this and upgrade the servers. . . or whatever it is they have to do to make myspace not fuck up all the time.

this is the stupidest article i've ever read. does he think myspace are trying to sell cds to scene kids? there are 1,142,333 friends of myspace records, they all got a notification when they logged in one day. this compilation WILL sell. if my stupid leetcore shirts all sold out on myspace when i had 1,000 myspace friends, this will sell with a million (and a fob song on it)

most all of the music on this is really radio friendly. there are enough bands that the general masses are becoming familiar with, and it's for sale at retail stores everywhere. even if this DOESN'T sell as well as they like, it's the quickest, easiest way to get the word "myspace" into walmart, best buy, and everywhere else that sells cds.

selling this compilation isn't going to make what myspace makes for a day's worth of ads, but it will sell and it will bring more more people to the site.

somebody needs to find a way to stop downloading. now.

why doesn't some hacker just put up 8,000 viruses labeled as mr. brightside by the killers?
that could only be done with an insane botnet, and the people with botnets that big are the same ones that get the pirated content to p2p in the first place.

"MySpace may be a great way to kill time, but in the end, it's just another piece of the internet that's being exploited by users to further their own cash flow, and that's hardly the kind of brand identity that a record label should be based around."

this site should have a label, seriously. i mean.... it would be great. i just wouldnt like reading a review of one of your records off the label. it would definitly be biased.

As soon as I read that post my mind went straight to The Great Gatbsy haha

Anyway, I'm pretty confident that this label will be successful, even if it doesn't deserve it.

isn't that what Kazaa became?

it's impossible to stop. people apparently wanna download/steal/whatever music. i don't know how to even begin to slow it down. just do your part and buy what you like, that's what i do. not that it makes a difference.

this will sell extremely well. the amount of people that no about this compilation is more than any compilation that ive ever seen that isnt advertised through television. I can guarantee this will be HUGE. I'm not buying it, but plenty of people will. You'll see.

i feel like the myspace corporation are now diliberatly trying to take advantage of all the myspace users. myspace.com has over a million users, and the advertising of the comp cd has reached EVERYONE. even i recieved an email from 'Tom' advertising the label. and i deleted tom as a friend like a year ago. dosnt that seem hypocritical of myspaces spam issues.

just the thought that they are trying to GAIN PROFIT, lots of profit from all the myspace users is scary. ya so myspace.com is free to use, little did we all kno it was a marketing ploy to take advantage of the underground music scene.

any other label in the world would kill to have all of myspace.com under there marketing tree. its bigger then any indie labels mailing list and/or street team combined.

bottom line, its a sad way to make a quick buck.

lol wake up man, do you think myspace was ever NOT intended to make a quick buck? did you notice the ads that have been on myspace since day 1? do you think those are free?

if absolutepunk had 1/1,000 of the traffic myspace did and had to pay the kind of money myspace does for server fees, they would have to find some new ways to make revenue.

sell the sunris

eh, I don't really agree with this article, i'm pretty confient this will sell really well. however, I do wish, with the plethora of little-known, unsigned bands that are on myspace, there was a conscious effort to put those bands out there. now if that was done with a second comp., i could state that the well known artists on volume 1 was a way to get people's attention, but even I'm not going to give myspace records that much credit yet. i agree that myspace has some great bands who aren't signed at their disposal (ex. a love like pi) and a ton of local talent as well. if myspace DOES tap into that, i think it's a great way to get some great bands into circulation. also, a lot of the big bands on here affiliated themselves with myspace before it exploded, so perhaps it's also a thank you.

one thing i don't under stand is the seething anger some people have towards it. perhaps because it was the little web community that took off. i don't know. it seems pointless to hate something like that. if you dont like it, don't sign up. why waste the energy to be some vocal against something like that?

but that's just me.
